Scout Featured in Jeep Super Bowl Commercial

Did you see the commercial for Scouting during the Super Bowl last night?

OK, so technically it was an advertisement for Jeep. But the excellent spot, which you can watch below, caught the eye of many former, current and future Scouts when it showed a Webelos Scout shooting a bow and arrow.

“For my country how it all started out,” the song goes. “For the brave and every Boy Scout.”

The ad spotlighted the different kinds of adventures Jeep owners enjoy. It showcased how that company has been a part of America’s identity ever since Jeeps were used to transport soldiers and gear in World War II.

Also part of America’s identity? The Boy Scouts of America, founded Feb. 8, 1910 — 106 years ago today. Read More......

Scouting's Barriers to Abuse

The BSA has adopted the following policies for the safety and well-being of its members. These policies primarily protect youth members; however, they also serve to protect adult leaders. Parents and youth using these safeguards outside the Scouting program further increase the safety of their youth. Scout leaders in positions of youth leadership and supervision outside the Scouting program will find these policies help protect youth in those situations as well.

Two-deep leadership on all outings required. A minimum of two registered adult leaders, or one registered leader and a participating Scout’s parent, or another adult is required for all trips and outings.  One of these adults must be 21 years of age or older.

Patrol Activities
There are instances, such as patrol activities, when the presence of adult leaders is not required and adult leadership may be limited to patrol leadership training and guidance.  With proper training, guidance, and approval by troop leaders, the patrol can conduct day hikes and service projects.

Adult Supervision/Coed Activities
Male and female adult leaders must be present for all overnight coed Scouting trips and outings, even those including parent and child. Both male and female adult leaders must be 21 years of age or older, and one must be a registered member of the BSA. Read More.....

2016 Camp Updates

From the Camp Director:  The way I see it is we have a great staff in place; campers are signing up early; we are expanding the Mountain Biking and zip-line programs; we're offering some new merit badges, and according to the photos in the Monday Memo our lake has water! It's shaping up to be a great summer.  If you haven't signed up yet, get your applications in soon and reserve the dates you want. I think it is going to be one of the best summers we've had in years. See you on the mountain!

From the Camp Program Director:  You might be wondering, is it too early to send my Scout to summer camp? Maybe they recently joined Cub Scouts or bridged over into Boy Scouts, or even someone that has joined Venturing with no prior experience. The answer is, of course, no. Camp Emerson offers an ideal setting for those new to Scouting, with program areas relatively close to each other, as well as the ability for family to visit. For those new Boy Scouts, our revamped Trailblazer program will help get them on the track to being a First Class Scout. For those that are new to Venturing, our E-Team high adventure program lets you "choose your adventure" - rappelling from great heights, working with hot metal in a forge, or riding through the forest on a mountain bike. If adventure is what you're looking for this summer, we've got plenty to spare.

From the Council Camping Specialist: Sign-ups for Summer Camp 2016 are moving along briskly and I wanted to remind everyone that the Early Bird gets the worm, the best campsites…and the Early Bird rates!  For Camp Emerson our Boy Scout camp we’re asking $335 dollars for our youth campers and Camp Wiley our Cub Scout camp the youth price is $195 per boy.  Our rates are some of the best in California and the program just keeps getting better every year!  Check out the Boseker Scout Reservation Website for all the information you’ll need for both Camp Emerson and Camp Wiley and follow this link to the Flyers…see you at Camp!

Thank You Campership Committee

Dear C.I.E.C. Campership Committee,

I am writing this to thank you for your assistance with sending me to Foxfire this summer. I had an absolutely amazing experience for that week and had the chance to further define my leadership capabilities.

We learned many important traits that excellent leaders use to influence their followers to accomplish a common goal. For example, we learned the importance of communication which makes tasks go very smoothly. Also, we learned about problem solving which is equally important if you run into a challenge along the way. Aside from great leadership skills, we had a chance to make "Mountain Man" gear like: a tomahawk, lead black powder rounds, and different leather accessories. In addition we got to participate in activities that "Mountain Men" would do. This includes tomahawk throwing, hiking, climbing and repelling, black powder shooting, and much more.

The faculty at the camp was spectacular and definitely helped all of the Scouts make outstanding goals and put their newly learned leadership skills to work. I persoanlly would recommend this camp to anyone who has graduated from NYLT. Once again, I am very grateful for your assistance with sending me to Foxfire.

Sincerly, David L. Troop 720, Senior Patrol Leader

The Next Camp Emerson CSP/Flap Set, 97 Year Anniversary

The Native American Chief on the photograph's right side is Algoot, the good chief of the Cahuilla. The monster on the left is Tahquitz.

I could recount how Tahquitz went from a human being to a shaman (medicine man) to a monster, but it is scary.

In any case, the good chief Algoot had to rise up off his death bed to hurl the Monster into the rock in Tahquitz Bowl in our present Camp Emerson. Algoot saved his people at the cost of his own life.

It is a noble story of self-sacrifice, literally.

As for the lightning bolts, they go back to the battle atop Tahquitz Peak. Algoot pursued the Monster up there. When Tahquitz hurled lightning bolts at Algoot, the good chief caught them and hurled them back. Tahquitz even turned into a strangling snake/dragon thing to try to squeeze Algoot to death like a python, but failed.

In Palm Springs are Tahquitz Falls, up Tahquitz Canyon, below Tahquitz Peak, which the PC Idyllwilders have renamed the effeminate "Lily Rock." At Camp Emerson is Tahquitz Rock. Down in Palm Springs is the corner of Tahquitz and McCallum Blvds.  I grew up pronouncing the name Tah quit z, but was, in 2008, corrected vehemently by a Co-ed Camp Counselor at Emerson (on my birthday, no less), who said, stridently, "It's Taw Keach." Yes, I have heard that pronunciation, but the actual Cahuilla I have known say Tah quit z.

Here is the photo. We will use the design on the right.

Positive Quote & Prayer
--------------------------------

“The Scoutmaster guides the boy in the spirit of an older brother.”

    ~  Baden-Powell

O Lord, our Heavenly father, we lift our hearts to thee at the beginning of this new day.

We come to this time and place of worship with thy beauty all about us; in the sky, in the trees, in the earth, and in all thy creation.

We praise thee, and come to worship thee. Blessed art thou, O Lord our God, who gives us each new day.

Amen
