New | A Message from Assistant Chief Scout Executive | | I am pleased to announce the selection of Shane Calendine as Western Region director. In this role, Shane will work in partnership with the volunteer and staff leadership of the region, areas, and councils to deliver quality Scouting programs and experiences to an increasing number of young people in the West. Shane will begin this new assignment effective April 16, 2016. Since 2010, Shane has been successfully serving as the Scout executive of the Las Vegas Area Council, headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada. Shane began his career in the Catalina Council, located in Tucson, Arizona, serving as district executive, senior district director, and assistant Scout executive. He was then selected as director of field service for the Denver Area Council. From there, he was selected as Scout executive of the Nevada Area Council in Reno, Nevada. He served as area director in the Western Region before his promotion to the Las Vegas Area Council. Shane is a graduate of Murray State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and minors in business administration and youth agency administration. He is an Eagle Scout and Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow. Shane served in volunteer roles as Cubmaster and advancement chair for his two sons’ pack and troop, and he volunteers with his wife to assist with her Girl Scout troop. He and his wife, Kendra, have three children: Life Scout Quinn (16), Girl Scout Cadette Hayden (12), and Bear Cub Scout Colt (8). Please join me in sharing with Shane congratulations and best wishes. Donald R. McChesney, Assistant Chief Scout Executive, National Director of Field Services | New | 2016 Camp Card Campaign! | | Camp Cards are a discount card for vendors’ products or services. They are specific to your city with the discounts listed on each card. Each unit can order cards for any city so if family/friends live in another town, you can sell them a card for their location. This is the quickest and easiest way to raise funds for your Scouts’ needs. Each card sells for $10.00. The unit gets $ 4.50 from each sale with the balance going to the producer of the cards and to council. That means if a Scout sells 20 cards, $90 stays with the unit. These cards are annual discounts and are good for the whole year. These cards can be ordered/requested starting NOW. Anticipate the number of cards wanted and place your order. A $50 deposit is required at time of order and will be applied against your total order. All money is to be turned in by May 31st. Unsold cards are to be returned at this time though the unit may purchase the cards and continue to sell during the year. New | Troop 646's Winter Camping | | In January, Troop 646 camped out at Castaic Lake. The Scouts practiced their Scout Skills, using knots and lashings to complete their "Useful Camp Gadgets" for Rank Advancement. Most of the Scouts went fishing and for some of the Scouts, it was their first time doing so. As usual, the food was a big hit and the Scouts cooked "Beef Stroganoff" & "Chicken Pot Pie", while the Adult Patrol made "Chicken Tortilla Pie" in the Dutch Ovens. The weather was great until Sunday morning, it started to rain pretty hard. We packed up and headed for the Golden Arches, since it would have been too difficult to cook and clean in the weather. The Scouts enjoyed their breakfast and we got to dry out a bit before the ride home! February's camping trip took us to Lake Perris for a "Bike N' Camp" Outing. The weather was perfect on this outing, which everyone was very happy about! Saturday morning after breakfast, the Troop took a 7 1/2 mile Bike Ride in and around Lake Perris. We were supposed to go around the Lake, but it was closed, due to construction on the Dam. So, we went with "Plan B" and just rode as far as we could, then rode back to the other side, took a lunch break and rode back to camp. We were only missing about 2 1/2 miles from our original plan. The Scouts did work on some Rank as well and as for the food this time, again, it was great! The Scouts BBQ'd Hamburgers for dinner over the open fire. On Sunday, the Scouts took some time cleaning their Patrol Boxes since they got a bit dirty from the January campout. The Troop is looking forward to our next campout over Spring Break, which will be at San Clemente State Beach! Christy Eimen, Assistant Scoutmaster | New | James E.
