David Bauman, Staff Photographer View More Pictures | New | Letter From a New Eagle Mom! | | Our son was recently interviewed for his Eagle. My husband and I wanted to thank the men who sat on the board for their time and energy they put into Scouting. We are truly thankful for them and the attention they give to helping boys, including our son. The night of my son's review, we were anxious yet hopeful, we had no idea what to expect. The men on the board made our whole experience memorable. Of course we are happy that he passed, but we aren't just talking about that night. I need to go back a bit in order for you to understand.... When our son was 3 he was diagnosed with Epilepsy. We were told very specifically that he would never have conversational speech, probably never be potty trained and would always live with us. We were devastated to say the least. He was put on medication and went through intensive therapy for over 12 years. It was always one step forward, two steps back. Even as I write this, my heart still feels that pain, but when I look at the young man he has become, my tears are pure joy. Because of his therapy and his diagnosis, he was really far behind in school and socialization. He struggled all through elementary and was not a very happy boy. We tried putting him in sports, but he could not seem to keep up physically or socially. We began looking for something different for him. We had no personal experience with Scouting, but a friend told us we should try Scouting. We first took Ben when he was 11 and just getting ready to start middle school. We were desperate for him to find some friends and hang out with other boys. We prayed this would work. It wasn’t easy. My son had a lot to learn socially, but he didn’t give up. He kept going. He went on some camp outs and realized he loved being outdoors. He shared his interests about rocks and cooking with the other boys and they listened. Scouting became his world. He went to every camp out and camp there was. He also joined middle school basketball and stuck with it. (Something I attribute to Scouting). Long story short... When these men interviewed that smiling young man, they were truly looking at a miracle. From a bleak prognosis to: He is an Eagle Scout, he is on his high school basketball team, he has friends, he loves school, he is positive and helpful to others and he NEVER gives up! Scouting gave him the skills and the confidence I could not. I am so loyal to Scouting and send boys there constantly. My other sons are participating in it. I love this program. Yes, it helped my son more than I can say, but that’s not the only reason. I see how it affects all boys that participate and stick with it. In a world where boys are expected to sit still and listen, to be quiet and to just do what they are told, here is a program that knows what boys need. Boys need to jump, climb, take apart, put back together, break, fix, care for something, love something and feel a purpose in order to become men. Scouting does this. I have four sons. I want to raise physically and mentally strong men that are loyal and loving and can take care of their families and contribute to their communities. I am blessed to have Scouting to help me with that tough job! Your work has amazing consequences. Keep it up! There are a lot of little boys out there. Thank you. | New | Vintage Scout Photo - Scouts at Post Office | | | New | Congratulations Cahuilla Arrowmen! | | 2015 was an incredible year filled with Order of the Arrow Centennial events and an awesome 100th Anniversary NOAC. Even with all of this going on our Arrowmen did not lose focus on what had to be done at home, and that focus resulted in Cahuilla Lodge being awarded the National Service Award and the E. Urner Goodman Camping Award. Cahuilla Arrowmen averaged 68.6 hours of service per Arrowmen – AWESOME!! Although the number of total registered Boy Scouts decreased by 176 scouts in 2015, there was an increase of 157 scouts in long-term campers, a camping trend we hope to see continue as we continue our camping promotion campaign in 2016. I want to personally congratulate Cahuilla Lodge LEC under the leadership of 2015 Chief Sean Sedey, Staff Advisers Paul Reyes and Tracy Youden, and our Supreme Chief of the Fire, Joseph Daniszweski. In addition to these, Cahuilla Lodge also received the 2015 Innovation Award for our work with the CIEC Conservation Committee and Outdoor Ethics. This was a collaborative undertaking and I want to congratulate Paula Booth, Sherri Reynolds and our own 2015 1st Vice Chief Hayden Martois for their innovative thinking, teamwork and resulting achievements in making National Trails Day a council-wide event. Thank you also to all the units, chapters and districts that participated! I hope to see this become an annual event. Let’s continue the tradition of Cahuilla Spirit and Cheerful Service and help even more scouts participate in long-term camping in 2016. Congratulations Cahuilla, Cynthia Blessum, 2016 Cahuilla Lodge Adviser to the Chief. |
New | Foxfire Graduation Surpasses 90% | | Riverside Community Church was the site of the 2015 Foxfire Advanced Youth Leadership Training Course Graduation Ceremony, which was held on Saturday, March 5th. Nearly 100 graduates, friends, guests, and faculty joined to recognize the young men and women who completed the practical portion of the course. Foxfire, much like Wood Badge, has two parts; and 8 day outdoor experience at Camp Emerson; and a period where their “ticket” is worked until completion. This ticket is a contract that is written by all who attend Foxfire, faculty and participants alike. Each individual writes a series of goals that they wish to accomplish by using the leadership skills and processes learned at N.Y.L.T. and refined at Foxfire. Most participants succeed, some don’t. This year, due to the excellence of the youth faculty and the support of the experienced adults, the Class of 2015 posted a completion rate of 93%! Congratulations to all. Foxfire 2016 will be celebrating 30 years of service to C.I.E.C., training youth leaders who have gone on to become excellent citizens and representatives of Scouting. The 2016 Foxfire Faculty has been preparing for several months to get ready for this year’s program, and it will be a great one. Newer program elements are being incorporated to make this course even better than before. It will be more fun thanit has been in the past, and more challenging. CLICK HERE to read more about Foxfire and to register online. If you have already completed N.Y.L.T., you may be able to join us this June. The Council Office is still accepting applications. New | Scouts Day at American Museum Of Ceramic Art | | "Join us for AMOCA’s Scouts Day. Docents will take your group on a tour of the museum’s current exhibitions and ceramic studio. They will learn how clay is made, stored and recycled. They will also learn how wedging improves the clay, how artwork is stored during the creative process and how the artwork is fired. Scouts will discover different firing methods available at AMOCA. Scouts will see the insides of the kilns, learn how kilns work, and see one in action! Scouts can also learn what glazes are made from and discuss major glazing techniques such as dipping, pouring, spraying, painting and sponging. Scouts will also enjoy getting dirty in the AMOCA Ceramics Studio. We offer the opportunity to work in clay. Your scout will be able to create their very own hand-built pot or sculpture based on their troop level. At the end of the workshop, scouts will be eligible to receive their pottery merit badge."
