Child Abuse Prevention Month

Greetings Scouters,

Since 1983, April has been National Child Abuse Prevention Month.  This is a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect.  Scouting is deeply invested in that effort.  During the month of April and throughout the year, communities are encouraged to share child abuse and neglect prevention awareness strategies and activities and promote prevention across the country.  For Scouting, doing our part means remembering our responsibilities towards our youth.

Briefly, all Scouters must complete Youth Protection Training to be registered, and we are expected to keep our training current.  Leaders, encourage all of your scouting parents to take Youth Protection Training – They don’t need to be registered leaders.  This ensures everyone is on the same page in protecting our youth and our adults.  Reinforce two deep leadership, do not meet or digitally communicate one-on-one with youth privately, monitor your youth leaders, use the buddy system, respect youth privacy, don’t allow discipline that isn’t constructive or reflective of Scouting’s values, bullying, secret organizations, or hazing.

Remember that all adult leaders and youth members are responsible for acting in accordance with the scout oath and law.  If you become aware of a harmful situation – Act, stop the policy violation or abuse, protect the youth, separate the involved parties, summon assistance via 911 or other leaders, notify the parents, and notify the appropriate Scouting professional.

For more detailed information regarding Scouting’s barriers to abuse policies and mandatory reporting responsibilities go online to the following links;

American Red Cross Wilderness & Remote First Aid Course

On the weekend of May 14 -15, 2016 ( from 0700-1830 on Saturday and 12:30 to 18:30 on Sunday) I am planning to offer the American Red Cross (ARC) Wilderness and Remote First Aid  (WRFA) course in San Clemente. WRFA program is based on the BSA Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines with enhanced content to meet OSHA's best practices for Workplace First Aid Programs. Participants must be 14 years of age and have current CPR certification from either ARC or AHA (see below for a CPR course I have scheduled prior to this WRFA course). Please be advised that the course will conform to the ARC requirements.

The class is a 16 hour course so both Saturday and Sunday attendance is required. If you would like to take this course, please sign-up with me by an email response jbrooksj@cox.net providing me with your name, course, phone number, unit and course date. I will also have a waiting list made, if necessary. The cost will be $90 for registered Scouts/Scouters. The fee is to cover ARC participant fees, the cost of materials, books, supplies, lunch and snacks. Interested scouts/adults who wish to take the course are encouraged to sign-up as soon as possible as the class is limited per ARC rules. I will also be providing participants with some additional first aid materials and supplies I think this will be helpful in addition to the WRFA required material. Please sign up ASAP. Further details will be sent later to those who enroll. Certification is valid for a two year period.

Very briefly the class objectives are to cover: identification of delayed help emergency situations; identify causes and prevention of injuries in wilderness areas; learn proper preparation for journeys into the backcountry; learn emergency actions steps for first aid response when EMS is not readily available; basic and some more advanced first aid technics; learn how to respond to an emotionally upset victim; learn short distance transfer and evacuation technics; and, experience providing wilderness first aid through the means of scenarios and simulated rescues that test knowledge and skills.

National Trails Day

The CIEC Outdoor Ethics Committee and Cahuilla Lodge Order of the Arrow together are again promoting the 2016 American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day.

June 4, 2016 is American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day, the country’s largest celebration of trails. National Trails Day events will take place in every state across the country and will include hikes, biking and horseback rides, paddling trips, birdwatching, geocaching, gear demonstrations, stewardship projects and more. America’s 200,000 miles of trails allow us access to the natural world for recreation, education, exploration, solitude, inspiration, and much more. Trails give us a means to support good physical and mental health; they provide us with a chance to breathe fresh air, get our hearts pumping, and escape from our stresses.

If your unit has a conflict with the first Saturday in June, plan your National Trails Day® event for a day or weekend that works best for you.

For more information or question about CIEC Scouting activities for National Trails Day please contact:

Veterans Honored with Monument

Monument to America's Veterans

By Heidi From, Reporter Mountain News

The ability to raise funds for a nonprofit project is uncommon. The ability to design, promote, manage and construct a monument is extraordinarily rare. Liam Gavigan of Lake Arrowhead, who officially became an Eagle Scout on March 22, raised nearly $23,000 and constructed a veterans monument dedicated to the five branches of the military service. The monument is Gavigan’s Boy Scout Troop 89 Eagle Scout project.

Honoring the U.S. Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy are flags and granite benches engraved with the service emblem for each branch. In the center are the United States, California and POW/MIA flags. A plaque commemorates veterans past, present and future.

The flags and benches are arranged around and upon a concrete slab in the shape of a pentagon. The finished monument far exceeds any expectations based upon the initial design and model. Dedication of the monument is planned for Veterans Day on Nov. 11.

The monument stands proudly at the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust (SBMLT) wildland nature preserve, Eagle Ridge. Also known as Arrowhead Ridge, the preserve is located at 352 Grass Valley Road in Lake Arrowhead. Read More.....

Eagle Service Project

A.J. Giliberto of Troop 2000 unveiled his Eagle Service Project to an eagerly awaiting crowd at Sacred Heart Church last Sunday. His project was a memorial for the 14 shooting victims of the San Bernardino terrorist attack late last year. He overcame many obstacles in order to complete the project prior to his 18th birthday, but with strong determination and a unwavering faith in God he succeeded. At the unveiling were many members of the victim’s families and 4 local government officials. A.J. was able to bring a community together and help heal some wounds through this very impressive project. We are all very proud of you.
