Mt. Rubidoux Trainings

A Troop Meeting for Troop Training
Scout leaders didn't have to give up a valuable Saturday to get trained in Mt. Rubidoux District. In fact, the training went to them. March saw the debut of a new approach to Scoutmaster Position - Specific Training when 13 adults came to host Troop 2's meeting. Trainer John Vineyard, also district committee chair, covered the course over two Monday nights with visual aids and using the troop as a model for troop operations. Reaction from participants was overwhelming positive for this approach. Because many units in the district have troop meetings on Mondays and Tuesdays, it was not inconvenient for them to find time for training. The district will conduct a second round of SM Specific Training before its camporee in April, where Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) will be conducted.  The SM Specific dates are April 11 and 18. For more information  contact John Vineyard at MRDChair@gmail.com

BALOO Goes Indoor & Ourdoors
From the district that gave you training innovations such as Buckskin, Foxfire and Cedar Badge comes a new approach to basic leader training. Mt. Rubidoux District is offering Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) for Cub Scout leaders and adults in two steps: On-line and Hands-on. In the first step classroom work will involve  a downloadable module and later a webinar.  The practical – the fun stuff – will be conducted at the district camporee, April 22-24. This last step of training will last a few hours on Saturday, April 23. BALOO trainer Michael McBride created this neat video that explains the approach: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9MwaBoyQoliQk1UemduYkpENlU/view

Register at http://www.bsa-ciec.org/event/1875007
Last day to register is end of business April 13. Course fee is $10. Camporee fees apply. For more information contact: Michael McBride at michael@familymcbride.net
The training is open to the council.

Get Trained at the Camporee
Two fun outdoor leader training courses will be held at the Mt. Rubidoux District camporee at Lake Perris, April 22-24. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) gives Boy Scout leaders the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts and to learn how they might teach them to the youth under their charge. Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders (OWL) helps leaders enhance the outdoor program for the Webelos Scouts in their den by teaching some basic outdoor skills as well as skills needed to complete many of the Webelos activity badges. Early registration fee $5 ends April 8. Fee then is $10. Registration closes end of business April 15. Camporee fees apply. Register at http://www.bsa-ciec.org/event/1858974
The training is open to  the council.

Original Cedar Badge Super-Sized
The Original Cedar Badge is bigger and badder than ever before with teams from four districts represented on staff: Mt. Rubidoux, Five Nations, Arrowhead and Temescal. Long a specialty of Mt. Rubidoux, this cluster-course approach will run April 29-30 in Riverside. Cedar Badge: Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops teaches Scouts with leadership positions about their new roles and how to most effectively reach success in that role. This district-level event is intended to assist those units with limited training resources, or those interested in giving their leaders additional exposure to unit operations, how to plan campouts, campfires, Scout’s Own services, how to lead songs, and make your boy-run program operate more smoothly. All information regarding equipment, registration, forms and camp, and FAQ can be found at https://cedarbadge.wordpress.com

Early bird sign-up fee is $28 if paid by April 8. After that date fee is $40. Registration deadline is end of business day April 22.

Register at http://www.bsa-ciec.org/event/1858994
The training is open to  the council.

National Trails Day

The CIEC Outdoor Ethics Committee and Cahuilla Lodge Order of the Arrow together are again promoting the 2016 American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day.

June 4, 2016 is American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day, the country’s largest celebration of trails. National Trails Day events will take place in every state across the country and will include hikes, biking and horseback rides, paddling trips, birdwatching, geocaching, gear demonstrations, stewardship projects and more. America’s 200,000 miles of trails allow us access to the natural world for recreation, education, exploration, solitude, inspiration, and much more. Trails give us a means to support good physical and mental health; they provide us with a chance to breathe fresh air, get our hearts pumping, and escape from our stresses.

If your unit has a conflict with the first Saturday in June, plan your National Trails Day® event for a day or weekend that works best for you.

For more information or question about CIEC Scouting activities for National Trails Day please contact:

Boy Scouts of America's Report

On Tuesday, March 29, 2016, eight Scouts from all over the state of California were selected as delegates to meet in Sacramento to deliver the Boy Scouts of America's Report to the State to Governor Jerry Brown, and other government officials.

Among the eight Scouts, First Class Boy Scout Sean Skiff from Troop 2 in Riverside, Mt. Rubidoux District was selected to represent our Council. He was selected because of his accomplishments within and outside of Scouting, and his enthusiasm for the Scouting program in general. Sean flew to Sacramento and assisted in presenting the Report to the State to Speaker of the Assembly Anthony Rendon, State Treasurer John Chiang and to Tom Torlakson, Superintendent of Public Instruction.

After lunch with Mr. Torlakson, the delegates got a VIP tour of the Capitol building then delivered the Report to the State to Governor Jerry Brown. After completing his official delegate duties, Sean visited with Assemblyman Jose Medina from Riverside, Majority Speaker of the Assembly Ian Calderon, Assemblyman Luis Alejo and Assemblyman Matt Dababneh. Golden Empire Council executives, who hosted the event, said the Report to the State has returned after a 15 year hiatus and will now become an annual event to promote the Scouting movement throughout the state of California.

The Report to the State is similar to the Report to the Nation which has delegates from all over the United States deliver the state of Scouting to the President of the United States each year.

2016 Black Canyon Trek

Members of crew 2016 from Norco and Crew 377 from Bermuda Dunes attended the annual Black Canyon Trek. On March 26 they launched their canoes and kayaks from Willowbeach, AZ, and headed down the Colorado River for a 5 day adventure.

After only a short distance from launching they were ensconced in the sheer canyon walls of Black Canyon. After only 30 minutes on the water they witnessed a red tail hawk grab a seagull in midair and do a controlled dive while the seagull was complaining about being lunch for the hawk. At camp on that first night they got to see another rare spectacle of nature when a colony of bats flew out like a wisp of smoke from a large cave above their campsite.

Day 2 of the trek was Easter Sunday. The venture scouts were woken up by a surprise visit from the "kayak Easter bunny" who left them a bag of candy next to their sleeping bags. The scouts also proudly practiced their leave no trace skills as they searched through the campsite to pick up Easter eggs that the kayak Easter bunny  saw fit to hide around the canoes, in a kayak, around the campsite, in scout's shoes, etc.

The weather on Sunday was excellent and they were able paddle 9 miles by burning off the sugar from the candy thanks to kayak Easter bunny. Along the way they spent lots of time exploring more caves, winding coves that concealed recesses in the canyon walls for climbing, and swimming in a cove rimmed with towering white boulders.

On the morning of day 3 of the trek the scouts were on the water at 5AM so they could experience paddling the river at night and watch the sunrise while on the water. They enjoyed this so much that they elected to start getting up every morning at 4AM so they could be on the water by 5AM and watch the sunrise.

On day 3 of the trek they watched from the safety of a sheltered Cove as 60 mph winds stirred a tempest of 6 foot waves on the water. The waves were so high that they were rising up 10 feet as they struck the canyon wall on the opposite side from them They also got to experience a sandstorm known as a haboob late in the day when the wind began blowing directly from the west. The next day they surfed 4 foot rolling waves into another Cove to seek shelter from another windstorm.

On the final day of the trek, March 30, they again were on the water at 5AM to watch the final sunrise of their trip. They paddled the final 4 miles to Cottonwood Cove, NV, to the sound of hooting owls, coyotes, and calm water with a gentle wind from the north to help push them along. The stillness of that final morning gave them the opportunity to reflect on their experiences and to put in perspective their shared adventure on the Colorado River through Black Canyon.

When they finally reached Cottonwood Cove the scouts were all smiles, high fives, and refreshed from their time on the river.
