Boseker Scout Reservation Camp Emerson Council Wide Work Weekend

Hello Folks,

I’ve got a few things for you today.

First, take a look at the flyer for the 2nd annual Boseker Scout Reservation Camp Emerson Council Wide Work Weekend.  Or BSRCECWWW… ok, let’s just call it the annual Camp Work Weekend. Less words and all.

The Cahuilla Lodge, many of you are members, is sponsoring this work weekend up at Camp Emerson. This is Memorial Day weekend. The goal is to get as many Arrowmen (and Arrowchicks) up to camp as possible on that weekend, whether it be for the day on Saturday or for the entire weekend to camp. There’s plenty to do up at Emerson to get it ready for the Summer Camping Season, and the more hands the lighter the workload for everyone.  Please distribute this information to your vast network of spies…er I mean Commissioners and get the word out.

To Do List:

  • Build tent platforms - bring screw guns and hammers
  • Clean kitchen and bathrooms
  • Repair water bubblers at campsites
  • Scrap and sand tables in campsites
  • Deep clean the nature lodge and possibly Boyce and Beard.
  • Fire abatement...we need to clear roofs and 100 ft perimeter around the buildings, especially Wagon Wheel and Main Lodge area. Bring rakes!
  • If we have any plumbers...we have some leaks in the pool house that badly need attention.
  • Electricians...I have motion switches to install in the bathrooms
  • Fine tune tents and pull cots from West lodge and get the rest of the cots and mattresses in the tents.
  • Camp beautification around Wagon Wheel weed whacking (adults only) raking. Bring rakes!
  • We have some sign painting to do if someone has a knack for that.
  • We have paint we can use for the tables and a few personal sander plus scrapers and wire brushes.

Kudos to Woodbadge Staff

Speaking of Wood Badge, I just had the privilege of taking this course at Camp Emerson and I would highly recommend it, if you haven't already. I was amazed at the excellent staff who takes the time to put on a awesome program. I would never have guessed that I would be camping in a tent at roughly 65 years old and enjoying every minute of it.

Eagle Project at Riverside National Cemetery

Dear Joe,

Nice article (in your Monday Memo) on the Eagle project at Riverside National Cemetery (RNC). Your leadership and that of others is important in the continued development of the National Medal of Honor Memorial.

There have been 3516 decorations made to 2497 individuals (19 double recipients). There will be one Italian Cypress, planted in squads of nine, for each recipient at RNC as part of the memorial. As two thirds of the cemetery is still raw land, two thirds of the trees can't be planted for years to come. This means that one of the ways the memorial will continue on its path to completion will be Eagle projects.

Again ... thanks you and please pass my thanks along to others in the Scouting community who helped make this latest addition possible.

Mike Goldware, Past Council President

Camp Wiley a Cub Scout Resident Camp

Dear Cub Scout Leaders and Parents:

It has come to our attention that many of the Scouters in our Council may still not be aware that the California Inland Empire Council does indeed operate a resident camp designed specifically for Cub Scouts. That camp is Camp Wiley located in the San Jacinto portion of the San Bernardino National Forest near Idyllwild California.

We are particularly proud of our camp and want to extend a personal invitation to every Cub Scout in our Council to come up and see what we have to offer. We accept Cub Scouts from Tiger through Webelos and have designed our program to conform to the latest program structure from National Boy Scouts of America.  If you’re looking for an opportunity for your Cubs to advance in your Dens and Packs this is a great place to do it.  We do encourage parents to attend with their Cubs, but recognize that is not always possible and allow for a 1 adult to 4 Cub ratio.

Our camp is nationally accredited by the BSA National Camp Accreditation Program and Camp Wiley has a history of many years of proven success and happy campers. We have a top notch, professional staff, many of whom have been on the staff roster for a number of years. Rest assured your Cub will receive individual attention and be treated like they are the most important camper for the entire time they are there.

Camp Wiley offers a multitude of programs designed with the Cub Scout in mind. We have arguably the finest shooting sports program in Southern California with our BB Gun and Archery Ranges; our Aquatics Program offers nationally trained instructors to help improve swimming skills and provide a safe swimming environment in our heated pool; we offer Arts and Crafts and a terrific Nature Program; your Cubs will get to sleep under the stars and this year eat dinner with King Wiley and his Knights of the Round Table.  For those families needing a little extra help we offer a subsidy in the form of our Campership Program and the application can be found at www.BSA-CIEC.org under the Camping tab. You can also find the “Top Ten Reasons” for coming to camp on the front of our website. For any additional information please contact Sonja Villarreal at Sonja.Villarreal@scouting.org (909) 793-2463 x 130.
SEE YA AT CAMP!

Camping Season is Finally Here...Are You Prepared?

Okay, I admit I’m a Boy Scout Handbook junkie. I don’t collect patches, mugs or a lot of other memorabilia, but I do love old Scouting books, especially old editions of the handbook. Perhaps it is because the handbook is such an iconic classic, or maybe because each edition evokes the smell of wood smoke, pines and the outdoors. For whatever reason, I know I’m not alone. Every edition is celebrated by each generation, and is often the exciting entry point for the next generation of young people.

Yesterday, one of our staff came to my office and told me that her son had been bugging her to bring home the handbook to help him prepare for a camping trip with another organization. As he walked through the pages, he became more and more excited about all the fun adventures that Scouting presents. I know that soon, we’ll get him as a new Scout.

In the meantime, that experience got me thinking about some of my early camping memories, all of which I remember so fondly: my first time sleeping under the stars, cooking meals over a fire and breathing amazingly fresh air. In addition to offering these memorable experiences, though, camping also teaches responsibility and teamwork. It gives our Scouts a sense of confidence and accomplishment they may not have experienced before. Camping is one of the more exhilarating ways Scouting imparts character and leadership skills and teaches our Scouts the true importance of being prepared. Read More......

National Trails Day

The CIEC Outdoor Ethics Committee and Cahuilla Lodge Order of the Arrow together are again promoting the 2016 American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day.

June 4, 2016 is American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day, the country’s largest celebration of trails. National Trails Day events will take place in every state across the country and will include hikes, biking and horseback rides, paddling trips, birdwatching, geocaching, gear demonstrations, stewardship projects and more. America’s 200,000 miles of trails allow us access to the natural world for recreation, education, exploration, solitude, inspiration, and much more. Trails give us a means to support good physical and mental health; they provide us with a chance to breathe fresh air, get our hearts pumping, and escape from our stresses.

If your unit has a conflict with the first Saturday in June, plan your National Trails Day® event for a day or weekend that works best for you.

For more information or question about CIEC Scouting activities for National Trails Day please contact:

Crew 604 at International Camporee

The International Camporee held at Mataguay Scout Reservation was attended by Crew 604 this month . Over 900 Scouts and Scouters from the US and Mexico, including a group of girls from the World Association of Girl Guides were in  attendance.

Crew 604 was awarded 2nd place overall in “Take the Camporee”!  This was a compilation of all scores reported over the days activities. Our Crew had a great time at the archery range, canoeing on the lake and competing in the fire building contest, just to name a few of the activities.

They had a great time meeting Scouts from other countries and learning about their fellow Scouts in the world Scouting Association.

Memorial Day History

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. Over two dozen cities and towns claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it’s difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day.

Regardless of the exact date or location of its origins, one thing is clear – Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

Remember Me

Remember me as your son
when you used to doctor my bumps
remember me playing in the dirt
remember me crying when i would get hurt
remember walking to get my diploma
remember arguing and saying I’m gonna
remember me as a man doing my job
remember me , and please don’t sob.
I did what I had to do no matter what
I was heavily trained and I fought
no regrets as I am in a wonderful place
Remember me when you look at my purple heart in your glass case.
