Cinco De Mayo at Alvarez Lincoln Jaguar

RIVERSIDE, CA – The Inland Empire community came together to celebrate Mexican heritage in a grand way on Cinco de Mayo 2016 at Alvarez Lincoln Jaguar. In addition to festive Mexican music and cuisine, Boy Scouts of America – California Inland Empire Council leaders were present to present Ramon Alvarez with the Vale la Pena award. Council President Michael O’Connor and Scout Executive/CEO Joseph Daniszewski of the Scouts presented the dealership owner with the honor, translated as “it’s worth the effort!,” for his great work in the community and the Boy Scouts of America. Also in attendance were Riverside’s Mayor Rusty Bailey and many other prominent community leaders and organizations. Two new Lincoln and Jaguar models were released and many businesses made new connections in their community.

Camp Directors Message

From the Camp Director: "Softly falls the light of day, while our campfire fades away... "

We sing the Scout Vespers after our campfire, but does our day have to be done? After crackerbarrel sit outside the lodge and count the millions of stars, stop at the Strawberry Creek bridge on your way back to your campsite and listen to the frogs and crickets, then lay in your tent and listen to your friends talking as you fall off to sleep.  Camp is a place to explore and make memories. Enjoy. See you on the mountain!

Jeffrey Lambert jefflambertcampdirector@verizon.net

From the Program Director:  Everyone always says that being at camp is being in God's country. This year we want you to be able to explore your faith in a way to give you a deeper connection with your spirituality in the outdoors. We are currently developing a program for you to be able to do just that. There's no better place to take in all of the Lord's creation than at camp, watching the heavens every night, listening to the various bird calls, and starting and ending the day with a beautiful sun rise and set behind Tahquitz Peak.

Kyle Gonering emerson.programdirector@gmail.com

From the Camping Specialist:  Warning!  Deadline Ahead!  Attention Campers…one more week and the Campership application deadline (May 16th) for Camp’s Emerson and our Cub Scout Resident Camp Wiley will have arrived.  Don’t miss out!  Don’t let financial hardship keep your Scouts from attending camp.  This is shaping up to be one of the best camps in years so help us get the word out and see ya at camp!

American Red Cross Wilderness & Remote First Aid Course

On the weekend of May 14 -15, 2016 ( from 0700-1830 on Saturday and 12:30 to 18:30 on Sunday) I am planning to offer the American Red Cross (ARC) Wilderness and Remote First Aid  (WRFA) course in San Clemente. WRFA program is based on the BSA Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines with enhanced content to meet OSHA's best practices for Workplace First Aid Programs. Participants must be 14 years of age and have current CPR certification from either ARC or AHA (see below for a CPR course I have scheduled prior to this WRFA course). Please be advised that the course will conform to the ARC requirements.

The class is a 16 hour course so both Saturday and Sunday attendance is required. If you would like to take this course, please sign-up with me by an email response jbrooksj@cox.net providing me with your name, course, phone number, unit and course date. I will also have a waiting list made, if necessary. The cost will be $90 for registered Scouts/Scouters. The fee is to cover ARC participant fees, the cost of materials, books, supplies, lunch and snacks. Interested scouts/adults who wish to take the course are encouraged to sign-up as soon as possible as the class is limited per ARC rules. I will also be providing participants with some additional first aid materials and supplies I think this will be helpful in addition to the WRFA required material. Please sign up ASAP. Further details will be sent later to those who enroll. Certification is valid for a two year period.

Very briefly the class objectives are to cover: identification of delayed help emergency situations; identify causes and prevention of injuries in wilderness areas; learn proper preparation for journeys into the backcountry; learn emergency actions steps for first aid response when EMS is not readily available; basic and some more advanced first aid technics; learn how to respond to an emotionally upset victim; learn short distance transfer and evacuation technics; and, experience providing wilderness first aid through the means of scenarios and simulated rescues that test knowledge and skills.

National Trails Day

The CIEC Outdoor Ethics Committee and Cahuilla Lodge Order of the Arrow together are again promoting the 2016 American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day.

June 4, 2016 is American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day, the country’s largest celebration of trails. National Trails Day events will take place in every state across the country and will include hikes, biking and horseback rides, paddling trips, birdwatching, geocaching, gear demonstrations, stewardship projects and more. America’s 200,000 miles of trails allow us access to the natural world for recreation, education, exploration, solitude, inspiration, and much more. Trails give us a means to support good physical and mental health; they provide us with a chance to breathe fresh air, get our hearts pumping, and escape from our stresses.

If your unit has a conflict with the first Saturday in June, plan your National Trails Day® event for a day or weekend that works best for you.

For more information or question about CIEC Scouting activities for National Trails Day please contact:

Scouting Spirit High at Cedar Badge

Rain could not dampen the Scouting spirit at Cedar Badge – ILST, not when we “got out hats and got our smiles!” The 65 Boy Scouts attending the original Cedar Badge over the April 29-30 weekend woke up to drizzle that turned into showers by breakfast and lasted until lunch.

The beautiful park at the LDS Church on Blaine Street in Riverside features  a covered picnic area. Scouts also used a room at in the church facility. The 10 patrols of Scouts, who came from throughout the council, participated in sessions covering the BSA’s Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops and the Patrol Leader Handbook. They also played games hard and sang songs harder, earning carrots for their patrol flags.

This was the first cluster Cedar Badge course with teams of staff from districts Arrowhead, Five Nations, Mt. Rubidoux and Temescal.  An “augie-augie” to all who staffed! Here is a video of the training course: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrGR3G2BHPU

The next Cedar Badge will be Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Register today at http://www.bsa-ciec.org/event/1858999

Troop 202 Busted!

On Saturday, I was out of my district at an event in Chino Hills (Temescal District). I was able to spot and bust Troop 202 in the act...

They were doing a great job on a service project with the Let It Be Foundation 5k. Let It Be helps families with deal with childhood cancer. 202 had scouts *everywhere* - on the course, at the opening ceremony, at the course end breakfast, at the entrance to breakfast, running trays of food back and forth. I couldn't get pictures of the whole unit because they were so busy and so many.

I talked to a few of the Scouts (didn't want to distract from their assignment). They were eager, cheerful, and friendly, whether brand new or older and seasoned.

I didn't see any adults having to keep things moving. I saw the SPL keeping an eye on things, and things were running smoothly. All the boys were in full uniform, doing it on their own, and making it happen.

It is always great when our Scouts are serving their community, when they can be identified as Scouts, and when they are cheerful at the same time. There are some great service opportunities out there which barely seem like work at all because they are so fun. These gentlemen have seen what that looks like.

These guys aren't forming, storming, or norming. They are PERFORMING.

Great job, Troop 202!  I'm glad to have caught you in the act of such exemplary service. Keep up the good work and fantastic display of scouting values.

Blaine Lincoln, CC/ASM T635, Old Baldy Membership Chair

Positive Quote & Prayer
-------------------------------

The Venturer Prayer

Lord, We thank you for letting us come once again to marvel at your creations. We hope that those in the group who are new to this activity will leave with the same sense of wonder that we always feel as we step into the great outdoors.
We treat these activities as fun, but always with a sense of wonder at the thousands of years required to create even the smallest of the features at which we look.
Help us to preserve your work, both for ourselves and for future generations of Scouts.

Amen.
