Why the National Scout Jamboree? A Letter to Scouts and Parents

I have been asked many times why I volunteer my time, my weeknights and weekends to encourage scouts to attend the National Scout Jamboree, why our troop and crew leaders and committee members put in countless hours to ensure a successful, safe, educational and fun Jamboree. Two words –Eagle Scouts. It was my recently my pleasure to attend another Eagle Court of Honor for a Scout who participated in the 2013 National Scout Jamboree.

Having served in various Leadership positions for the 2010 and 2013 National Scout Jamboreesand now serving again as the Council’s 2017 Jamboree Chair – my enthusiasm does not diminish. Why? Because I know that a very high majority of Scoutswho have attended a National Scout Jamboree will go on to become Eagle Scouts.

Over the last six plus years, I have been invited to literally dozens and dozens of Eagle Court of Honors, attending as many as possible and regretting the ones I unfortunately missed, for Scouts who participated in either the 2010 or the 2013 National Jamborees. Each time I attended I was thankful for having the opportunity to shake the hand or to send a note and offer my congratulations to a young man who had grown both in stature and knowledge, and who has made a commitment to himself and to his community to be a better person and to achieve what less than 4% of all Scouts achieve, scouting’s highest rank, Eagle Scout.

Did attending a Jamboree make a difference to these Scouts in attaining the rank of Eagle – I believe if you asked anyone of these young men the answer would be YES!

The excitement and the experience of attending a National Scout Jamboree cannot be measured in words, pictures or patches – it can only beexperienced by those who attend and who join nearly 40,000 other scouts at this the best of all scouting events and the lifelong friends that they can make along the way, and what they take away and how they use it.

I encourage every parent to consider sending their son to the 2017 National Scout Jamboree. Gather the information, ask questions, watch the videos and assess the value it brings to your sons scouting experience and his commitment to becoming an Eagle Scout.

I know that your Scout will both thank you and reward you for your investment in his future – so he can Live the Scouting Adventure!

National Trails Day Pack 212

Pack 212 in Chino celebrated National Trails Day by taking a hike to the Redwood Grove at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea. The hike is about 2.4 miles. We were led by a park ranger who taught us about native plants and animals. The grove is 40 years old, consists of 241 trees, and the tallest tree is about 93 ft tall.  The boys really enjoyed the hike and practiced the outdoor code. Thank you!

National Trails Day Shoreline Cleanup at Lake Perris

On Saturday, June 4, over 30 scouts, their parents, and scouters attended a shoreline cleanup at Lake Perris to celebrate National Trails Day. The focus of this service project was to use paddlecraft to access areas of the lake that can't be easily reached by foot. Despite the first big heatwave of the summer, our group paddled 8 canoes and 5 kayaks out to Alessandro Island and other hard to reach areas to collect trash. We split up into 2 teams with most of the canoes going to the island to pick up trash and the kayaks, with 1 canoe, covering the riparian areas along the eastern shoreline. Collectively, we were able to cover almost 2 miles of shoreline of the lake.

Both groups met on the island at the end of the shoreline clean up to unload trash onto a barge brought over by the park's maintenance staff. Afterward, as we paddled back to shore we got to enjoy some roller coaster action from the waves that were created by passing power boats. We held a potluck lunch at Sail Cove and spent the rest of the day paddling around the boats, sharing stories, and enjoying the cool water and a great day together.

Special thanks to Paula Boothe, Teresa Flug, Aca Chapter of Cahuilla Lodge, Crew 377, Troop 78, Troop 257, Troop 180, and the CIEC Outdoor Ethics Committee for coming together to make this service project happen.

Varsity Vision Training 2016

The California Inland Empire Council held two “Varsity Vision Training” course with the one in May was in Murrieta and June was in Riverside. Between the two courses several adult and youth leaders completed the training. The unique part of the course is that the adult leaders are taught by the youth trainers with the help from adult staff. In this course the youth and leaders were trained by participating rather than lecture.

The participants spent the weekend actuality learning the importance of the Five Fields of Emphasis applies to every activity and how they work within the Varsity Team. This course focused on how the Varsity Coach and Team Captain work together to deliver an effective program for their unit.  It reinforced the concept that a team is boy-led, and that the Team Captain is the leader and the roles of the Program Managers. In the course the Coach and Program Advisors learned what their roles are to the team.  The adult leaders and youth participates came away trained.

Positive Quote & Prayer
---------------------------------

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children...to leave the world a better place...to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."

~  Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882) American Poet and Essayist

My Father, I pray for the love of work, and the desire to cultivate life. Stir me, that I may be ambitious. May I not stare at life in an everyday way and forget that others are watching for the surprises. Help me to be considerate and kind in all that I do.

Amen.
