| | | | | July 18th, 2016 | New | Remembering Waite Phillips, 50 years after his death | | When Waite Phillips donated the land that became Philmont Scout Ranch, the total properties were valued in excess of $5 million. Adjusted for inflation, that’s roughly $79.5 million today. Scouts and Scouters who have visited the beautiful, rugged New Mexico paradise know the real value of Waite’s gift, however: It’s priceless. Waite Phillips died Jan. 27, 1964, which was 50 years ago last month. He was 81. Waite’s vision for Philmont was that it would be an opportunity to get young men closer to the great outdoors. He must have realized, even in the late 1930s and early 1940s when he donated the property, that boys needed nature — especially in a world that offered more and more excuses for them to remain inside. He once said the best contribution Scouting can provide to a young person’s development is “learning to live in the great out-of-doors.” That helps build “initiative, self-reliance, and dependability,” he said. Philmont specifically, he continued, perpetuates “American idealism and patriotism among boys from all parts of America.” Read More...... |

Rubidoux / 5 Nations Day Camp | | Mt. Rubidoux / 5 Nations Day Camp blasted off June 20-24 at Jurupa Mountain Discovery Center with approximately 160 boys and 22 tagalongs! The first day they thought they were on the planet Mercury as the heat SOARED to almost 115 degrees! Program Director Anastasia Leveck made sure that there were plenty of water activities including gold mining for alien rocks so they could play in the water, water games, and a slowed down schedule. She even secured a special visitor from JPL who had worked on the JUNO Project that will be approaching Jupiter THIS MONTH to come in to talk to the boys! Anna Escalante and Patricia Barker made the first day of registration seem effortless as they got all the boys checked in! Director Debb Walker had secured another donation again this year for water bottles for the boys to have through out camp to refill with ice water as they went from station to station. Kevin Neuer, head Den Chief, made sure that all Den Chiefs made sure that those buckets stayed filled with water! Terry and Howard Owens handled all of tagalongs with such ease and fun! We always have the kids AND The Owens coming back year after year for more!! Tuesday, the temperature cooled off a little, so our trip to Venus wasn't as bad. Laurey Neuer, the Crafts Director had MANY wonderful craft ideas to keep them busy!! Brandon Arias and Tracy Doverspike our STEM Directors started talking about ROCKETS to the boys and building them out of 2 liter bottles to be launched on Thursday! Director Debb was able to wear her Astronaut costume for a short time for flags! Denise Pedroza, Pam Christen and Nicole Rhodes - all Leader Directors, made sure our programs were AWESOME so each level accomplished some electives! Each day we had AWESOME nutritious meals available made by Rebecca Bushman and her team of volunteers! The boys can look forward to receiving their shooting sport patches and pins thanks to all the efforts of Jessie Andrews, Chris Andrews, Gavin Christen, Jason Ohleheiser, Sandy Bock, Gavin Bock, Miss Bock and Richard Partin who EVERY DAY dedicated themselves in the heat to make sure the boys had an awesome opportunity to do bb guns, archery and wrist rockets. Wednesday was Super Hero Day so many of the kids had made capes in art and even Director Debb dressed up as Super Director Debb for flags! Thursday Night the boys were able to show off their skits and songs during a campfire portion of camp that also included special guests appearance of the Saber Guild Society that showed off their light sabers and Darth Vader, and also a visit from a K9 and his Handler before heading down to the campsites for a special overnighter portion to help satisfy one of the requirements of camping! Friday morning they all headed over The Cove Waterpark with their families where they got their weekly bath before heading back to JMDC for our "SPLASH DOWN LUAU" where Pack 1230 won the traveling trophy for having had their paperwork in on time, most camp spirit and most adult volunteers, besides other things! As usual, Director Debb, made the big announcement for next years theme, American Revolution 1776, in another costume!! A BIG thank you to Wes Andree and his staff at Jurupa Mountain Discovery Center for helping making this years camp a HUGE success! Debb Walker, Council Day Camp Advisor |
New | Operation "On-Target" 2016 | | Operation “On-Target” is a Varsity Scout event in which teams climb mountain peaks and signal other teams on different mountain peaks with mirrors and communicate using Ham radios. The goal was to signal as many peaks as possible. The mountain tops stood above the slight haze that covered the valley floor. We had teams and crews that climbed or drove to San Gorgonio Peak, Keller Peak, Elsinore Peak, San Jacinto Peak, Cucamonga Peak and Bighorn Peak. Since the goal was to send a signal to all the peaks; we are happy to say we met our goal. The California Inland Empire and San Diego-Imperial Councils had teams in our area and their area for this year event. Team where able to send and receive flashes. Some teams signaled three peaks and others as many as six peaks. All the units that took part were rewarded for their efforts by hiking in our local mountains and enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. The next Operation “On –Target” will be September 17 so now is the time to sign up. Thank you for the warmth of the sun and the increased daylight. Thank You for the beauty I see all around me and for the opportunity to be outside and enjoy Your creation. Thank You for the increased time I have to be with my friends and family, and for the more casual pace of the summer season. Draw me closer to You this summer. Teach me how I can pray no matter where I am or what I am doing. Warm my soul with the awareness of Your presence and light my path with Your Word and Counsel.
