Explorers at the Jamboree? Yes, Explorers at the Jamboree!

Based on the success from the Exploring Summerfest during the summer of 2016, we know Explorers are interested in experiencing the history, adventure, and excitement of the jamboree. As a result, this national celebration of youth — which will run from July 19–28, 2017 — now includes Explorers. We are excited to offer youth and adult participants in Exploring programs three different options for attending the Jamboree in 2017:

Option 1: Attend as a Participant

This is an amazing opportunity for Explorers to experience this national celebration at the Summit Bechtel Reserve. Explorers will have access to all events and programs, take in the sights, and experience the fun and exciting high-adventure challenge courses that the Summit is known for. The cost to attend is $975 per youth and adult. (Individuals may attend with other groups.)

Option 2: Attend as Staff

If you attend the jamboree as a staff member you can choose one of several service areas to support the national jamboree: Health, Food Service, Traffic & Parking Control, and Maintenance. During down time you can still participate in the scheduled programs and events, and experience the high-adventure activities of the Summit. The cost to attend is $850, and you must be 21 years of age.

Option 3: The Best of Both Worlds, for Half the Price

If you elect to attend the jamboree as a participant AND staff, your cost will be cut in half. You will be required to work half the event as a registered staff volunteer and as a participant for the remaining half of the jamboree. This is a great opportunity for Explorers to experience the jamboree, while saving on cost. The total cost to youth and adult Explorers for this option is $480. Youth must attend with adult leaders. (Please note: Every option includes meals, shelter and all necessary accommodations.)

Find Out More

Limited camperships (scholarships) are available for youth participants to assist in the cost of attending the 2017 National Scout Jamboree. To apply for a campership, parents/guardians of youth should fill out the Campership Application for their youth participant found on the website. To register, visit the 2017 National Jamboree website.

Two of Scouting's Biggest Events, JOTA & JOTI are Just Around the Corner

Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA) and Jamboree-on-the-Internet (JOTI) is coming up soon! Did you already add JOTA and JOTI to your unit, district, and/or council calendars? If not, don’t forget to mark Oct. 14–16, 2016 as JOTA and JOTI weekend!

Other than an opportunity to meet Scouts from around the world, complete requirements in Cub Scouts, and complete part of the requirements for the International Spirit Award, JOTA and JOTI is another great way to tie in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)! JOTA introduces Scouts to the fun, technology, and magic of amateur radio, while you can prepare your Scouts for safe Internet use by incorporating the BSA's training tool, Cyber Chip, before they participate in JOTI.

Does your unit or council want to participate in JOTA, but does not have access to an amateur radio station? Icom America and the BSA have a sponsorship agreement that began in 2012 and now extends through 2018. One aspect of that agreement is that Icom America will provide up to 10 complete amateur radio stations for use by local councils. Stations can be requested for long-term development loan stations and for event loan stations. You can find the details, application, and loan agreement here.

Be sure to visit JOTA’s webpage, www.scouting.org/jota, and JOTI’s webpage, www.scouting.org/joti, for how to participate, download participation certificates, where to order this year’s patches, and MUCH MORE! We hope you have lots of fun and success during these exciting events!

New Lion Pilot Program!

Use This Playbook to Help Spread the Word About New Lion Pilot Program

In our 100-year history, the BSA has served millions of youth members and their families. We’ve instilled the values of character development, leadership, personal fitness, and citizenship into the core of every activity and adventure. This year, in response to a need we witnessed in the Scouting community, we’re launching a new pilot program to bring these core values to a new audience of kids – kindergarten-age boys.

The Lion program, launching in 198 local councils this fall, combines the primary Scouting concepts of leadership and character development with age-appropriate and fun activities for boys and their parents to experience as an introduction to the Scouting program. The Lion program offers 12 adventures for youth to enjoy that help them learn respect for their peers, the importance of family, building courage, and sticking to what’s right. We want to help parents build a strong foundation for their kids that complements an introduction to formal education and allows families to take an active role in their child’s development.

We look forward to launching this pilot program within your local council this fall, and we’ve developed the attached toolkit to assist you with promoting the Lion pilot within your community. We appreciate your help in reaching a new Scouting audience, and we thank you for your continued service in Scouting.

2016 Hat Paddle Craft Safety

Paddle Craft Safety: October 18th & October 25th or October 29th & 30th
Float trips are popular Boy Scout and Venturing activities. Safety Afloat awareness training provides guidelines for safe float trips and is required of unit leaders, but does not provide the skill training mandated by those guidelines. BSA Aquatics Supervision: Paddle Craft Safety expands Safety Afloat training to include skills, as well as knowledge, to prepare a unit leader to confidently supervise canoeing or kayaking excursions on flat water. It is open to any registered Scout or Scouter who is age 16 or older. The training must be conducted by a council-approved instructor, takes roughly eight hours, and is valid for three years. Paddle Craft Merit badge counselors must attend.

Troop 646's First Eagle Court of Honor

In June, Troop 646 had the pleasure of hosting their first Eagle Court of Honor. It was a very special ceremony for Blake P. and his family, a day that they will always remember. There were about 75 family members and friends in attendance for this young mans accomplishment. After the ceremony, family and friends gathered for food and fellowship. The Taco Man was serving up some great food, followed by delicious cupcakes that Blake's Mom, Lisa made. It was a wonderful day, full of great memories! Congratulations to Blake!

Rancho Cucamonga Relay for Life

Good-Bye Summer (It's been a busy one....)!

Although the 24 Hour Rancho Cucamonga Relay for Life was held on June 4th and 5th at the Ontario Soccer Complex, the end of the Relay "Season" was officially August 31st.  The event was a huge success, raising almost $92,000 in all for the Cancer Patients of Rancho Cucamonga. The team that Troops 646 and 634 helped out with was "Lori's Crew" and our Team raised almost $9,000! There were 26 Scouts and Siblings and  20 Scouters and Adults that volunteered 394 hours of time to make this Relay for Life such a success.  Everyone pitched in by walking laps, working the Cardenas booth, filling the Luminara bags and placing them around the track, participating in the games such as the Hungry Hungry Hippo, the Hula Hoop Game, and more! It was truly a great event with lots of camaraderie between the two Troops and all of the Families and Friends that participated!  Both Troops are looking forward to working together again at next years event, which will be held on June 10th and 11th!

Operation On-Target 2016

Operation On-Target” is an annual (since 1981) Varsity Scout event on the 3rd Saturday in July and September. Teams ascend mountain peaks, flash teams on other peaks with signal mirrors and coordinate via ham radio. The goal – to flash as many teams as possible. Despite some haze, peaks were visible at more than 80 miles this Saturday. Team & Crew 106 took Keller Peak, Team & Crew 6, Mt. Baden-Powell, and Crew 377, Soledad near San Diego. They were joined by GLAC troop 946 at Keller Peak, Las Vegas unit 909 at Potosi Mtn, NV, and adult volunteers at Ranger Peak and Mt. Wilson. The Keller Peak and Baden-Powell units each succeeded in signaling two different peaks, including each other. The units that took part were rewarded for their efforts by hiking in our local mountains and enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. The next Operation “On –Target” is July 15, 2017. There will be On-Target classes next spring, and there is self-study material at the Operation On-Target website: http://www.bsaontarget.org/

A Mellower Season
"Autumn is the mellower season, and what we lose in flowers we more than gain in fruits"

~Samuel Butler

We Remember

In the rising of the sun and in its going down,
we remember them.
When we are weary and in need of strength,
we remember them.
When we are lost and sick at heart,
we remember them.
When we have joys we yearn to share,
we remember them.
So long as we live, they too shall live,
for they are now a part of us, as
we remember them.
In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter,
we remember them.
In the opening of buds and in the rebirth of spring,
we remember them.
In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of summer,
we remember them.
In the rustling of leaves and in the beauty of autumn,
we remember them.
In the beginning of the year and when it ends,
we remember them.
