| | | | | January 30th, 2017 | New | Welcome! | | Greetings, My name is Kenneth Alexander “Baloo” Hahn. It is my pleasure to announce that I am the incoming Camp Director for Boseker Scout Reservation 2017. I’m excited to join the California Inland Empire Council in the future and current endeavor of getting camp ready for the summer. First up, a little about myself. I’m an Eagle Scout out of the Former Los Angeles Area Council, which is now known as the Greater Los Angeles Area Council. I have my BA in History from California State University, Fullerton. I’ve spent 19 seasons at Forest Lawn Scout Reservation, and I have spent the last seven of those as a Camp Director or as a camp manager in some capacity. Last summer, I traveled up to Northern California to be the camp director at Cutter Scout Reservation run out of Pacific Skyline Council. At both camps I worked on developing programs meant to interest youth looking to enhance their summer camp experience. I look forward to doing the same at Boseker Scout Reservation with you. Boseker already has a great program aimed at boys of all ages. In today’s Boy Scout Movement it is imperative to be self-critical and for each property to ask where the next step of development will take them, and Boseker is no different. There are new horizons for Boseker Scout Reservation ahead to explore. So the next question to ask is “Will I (you) be a part of the Future at Boseker?” There are still critical positions available, including the role of Program Director. “What does it take to be a Program Director?” The Program Director is important in the planning and implantation of the program at camp. This individual makes sure that the camp equipment is in good working order and that the program areas in camp have what they need for the campers. The PD is also in charge of setting the tone to camp and keeping the staff morale up. Finally, the Program Director is responsible for guiding campers through the rigorous camp program, so they should be good with scheduling, time management, and people skills. If this sounds like something that you would like to attempt, apply at the council’s website. I hope to see YOU as a part of the crew at Boseker this summer. Thank you, God Bless, and Happy Scouting! New | Cub Scout Pack 803 Sells $80,000 Worth of Popcorn! | | When it comes to salesmanship, an Eastvale Cub Scouts pack really pops. Pack 803 sold more than $80,000 worth of popcorn – the most in the nation – during a seven-week period last fall, according to the California Inland Empire Council of the Boy Scouts of America, which includes 20,000 Scouts and adults in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Charter organization representative Tom Donatoni, whose son is a member of the pack, stressed that it was a group effort that involved all of the more than 100 members of Pack 803 and their parents. Donatoni said that in order to make the event a success the Cub Scouts, parents and leaders relied on a lot of logistical coordination. The cubs took turns manning booths in shifts and the parents helped ferry the cubs to different locations. One of the brains behind the effort was Chris Linsday, a den leader whose son is also in the pack. He was named the “popcorn colonel” and was in charge of making all the moving parts work. Linsday said that apart from raising money to fund Scouting activities – such as community service projects, camping, Pinewood Derby events and adopt-a-highway projects – selling popcorn also teaches the cubs valuable life skills, such as salesmanship and how to handle money, and helps build their confidence. He added that getting turned down by members of the public is a useful lesson. “It helps them deal with disappointment,” said Linsday. Like, Donatoni, Linsday said that the success of the popcorn sales was a group effort. “I’m very proud of everyone in the pack that helped,” he said. Donatoni added that many of those who were approached for sales were supportive of the cause. Ricci Dula, assistant Scout executive at the Inland Empire Council, said he wasn’t surprised that Pack 803 made their goal. “They had a plan and they were very focused,” said Dula. He added that everyone one at the council was excited about the honor. “We’ve never had a unit sell this much popcorn,” said Dula.
