The Changing Face of the Boy Scouts

For the past several weeks, the BSA has been working with CBS Sunday Morning as they develop a story about Scouting, including our new offering to make Scouting more accessible to families. The story will aired Sunday, Feb. 4th.

If you’re not familiar with the show, it is a weekly news magazine comprised of several in-depth, 5- to 6-minute stories about news and human-interest topics. The stories are typically thoroughly reported and generally balanced, meaning that the reporters tend to include multiple points of view in each story.

In our case, the reporter and producer conducted a lengthy on-camera interview with Chief Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh. They also met with a refugee Scouting troop in Utah and some of our early adopter Cub Scout girl dens in the Cascade Pacific Council.  In addition, we believe they’re interviewing representatives from the Girl Scouts, who have been critical of our family programming plans.

The BSA felt participating in the show provided us a strong opportunity to amplify our legacy of preparing young people for life by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

At the same time, we know that our recent decision to extend Scouting to include girls has been and will continue to be controversial in some circles. For that reason, I will watch the broadcast closely. If the need arises, the BSA will then provide messaging and other materials to help local councils respond to questions and criticism you may face because of the piece.

Thoughts from the Council:

Positive Quote and Prayer
--------------------------------

"One of the first duties of a Scout is obedience to authority. He must obey his orders in the first place and put his own amusement or desires in the second."

~Robert Baden-Powell

We thank You, God, for the loveliness of nature,

Which is Your special handiwork.

Everything is wonderfully made with such care.

Help us understand our world,

So we can help take care of the things You have made,

And keep them beautiful as You meant them to be.

Amen.
