But what do you do when the flag you hold so dearly is tattered beyond repair? Do you still use it? Throw it away? "It means a whole lot more than just, 'oh it's tattered, beat up, replace it, get a new one, toss that one out' it's not that easy," said Palm Desert resident Jesse Garcia. "My daughter served in the army. This flags means a lot to me. And I'm grateful for her service and everybody else's service. Past, present and future," said Tonya Garcia, Jesse's wife. For this Palm Desert couple. the United States flag is a reminder that many brave men and women gave their life so people could proudly raise the flag at home, at school and at work. "It made me think, how many other parents have gone through this, send off their kids. And how many of those kids didn't come back. That's what our flag means. Every time I put it up I think of those kids that didn't come back. I'm grateful that my kid came back. But there's tons of kids that didn't," said Jesse. At first the Garcia's didn't feel it was right to burn the flag even though their research said they could. "When you see other people in other countries that don't like the American flag that's what they do, they burn it. And every one says no, no, no. So why would I as an American burn my own flag?" said Tonya. There are several ways to retire a worn-out American flag. Either burn it, bury it, recycle it or donate it. But each way should be done properly. "The American flag, we want to treat it with respect all the way from the very beginning, all the way to the end of its life, and when a flag is tattered or torn it is no longer respectful to have it flying. So we take it down and retire it in a respectful manner," said John Ramont of Boy Scout Troop 377 in Bermuda Dunes. For cotton flags, it is acceptable to burn them. "Again out of respect, what we do is we have the flag held open one more time so that it's to fly one more time. Then we lay gently over the fire and fold the corners in and let it burn. And we do not extinguish the fire, we let it burn out on its own," said Ramont. You should not burn synthetic or nylon flags because doing so would release toxic fumes. "We cut the flag apart first cutting it in half to cut the stripes away from the blue field. And we always leave the blue field intact as it represents keeping the union intact. But we split the flag apart and once it's split apart, it's no longer a flag and then it can be disposed of, recycled, however someone wants," Ramont said. It is acceptable to bury a worn out American flag if it is folded properly and placed in a small wooden box. Jesse and Tonya Garcia said they would just that. The American Legion accepts worn-out American flags and will retire them properly if you don't have the means to do it yourself. By: Vince Marino KMIR Click here for more... |
New | VR Experience in Cahuilla Lodge's Camp Promotion Booth | | On February 25 Cahuilla Lodge debuted the latest feature to their camp promotion booth during the University of Scouting, 360 degree video tours using VR (virtual reality) headsets. Visitor's to our booth had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the Colorado River, Canyonlands of Utah, and panoramas of some hiking trails in Southern California. What is unique about VR headsets playing 360 videos is that you can see EVERYTHING. Look up and you see the sky, look down and you see the ground, or look around you to see all the scenery captured by the specialized cameras. Scouts and scouters were required to sit in chairs while wearing the VR headsets because the experience can be so disorientating for some individuals. For an example, the editor of the 360 videos almost instinctively jumped out of his chair trying to high side while watching a video on a VR headset of a raft going down lava falls in the Grand Canyon. The ability for Cahuilla Lodge to present 360 videos in VR is very recent and we will be adding more videos to our library over the next few months. Among the videos we will have for everyone to experience are program and high adventure highlights of summer camp at Boseker Scout Reservation as well many areas to go climbing, hiking, or paddling in and around Southern California. New | 2017 Picacho Trek, Canoe Trip Down The Colorado River | | On Feb. 19-20 was the annual Picacho Trek that is hosted by Venturing Crew 377 and Aca Chapter of Cahuilla Lodge. Twelve members of Venturing Crew 54 from Corona, CA, joined us for our 34 mile canoe trip down the Colorado River through Imperial National Wildlife Refuge and Picacho SRA. Picacho Trek is normally a 3 day trip, but we had to launch our canoes on a Sunday morning due to a large storm that passed through the area on Saturday. Three scout units from 3 different councils were scheduled to paddle this section of the river that weekend and we were the only ones to that weren't deterred from the weather. Our reward for following through on our trip was largely having the entire area to ourselves. We saw absolutely no one else on or around the river until we reached our take out point at Fishers Landing, AZ. On Sunday we launched from Walters Camp and paddled 14 miles to campsite 4S in the northern section of Picacho SRA. Along the way we tied the canoes together to form a barge and had lunch while floating down the river. In the evening at our campsite at 4S we roasted hot dogs over a campfire and served up chili dogs with "river root beer floats" for dinner. During a bulk of the evening and early morning we listened to a near constant rotating choir of owls, burrows, and packs of coyotes. On Monday morning we loaded the canoes to get on the water early because we had a day full of sights to see and 17 miles to paddle down to Fishers Landing. We visited the old sternwheeler resupply depot at Nortons Landing, the overlook of the river at Paddlewheel camp, paddled through reed passages leading to backwater lakes, and explored an old miners cabin and Native American petroglyphs adjacent to the river. When we finally arrived at Fishers Landing in mid afternoon we were a bit sore from the distance we paddled, yet we energized by our shared experiences on the river. Even though our trip was cut short by a day due to weather, we weren't deprived any less of an adventure or the beauty of this section of the Colorado River. A special thank you to Paula Boothe, Richard Boothe, Craig Hadden, Debbie Hadden, Vickey Hermes, Frank Hermes, and Mike Downs for helping make this trip possible for everyone that attended. Also a special thank you to Wendy Drain for supplying the photos accompanying this article. | New | BSA National Foundation: Gift Legacy Newsletter | | Greetings! New | Wednesday Work Group @ BSR Camp Emerson | | Ed Morgan and I started going up in 1999 to do various things mostly construction and repairs. After Jim O'brien started Leon Correz and Don Fluent came on it became a group and Wednesday was the best day and we did work it just became the "Wednesday Work Group". Over time there have been others that came up to help out. When the pine beetle started killing trees a sawmill looked like a good idea and the Ranger and I went to a show at Lake Arrowhead and put a deposit down to keep the mill we wanted there to save on shipping. Over the next period several people contributed to the mill, mostly Mike Downs and Gary Hatton. More recently Foxfire staff Beau Sawyer. Jim Davis, Gary DeFraene, and Don Salva started coming up and helping. Other people have come and worked on building new cabins. Bob Swartzel Bob's letter reminds me that "A Scout is Helpful"; and we could sure use yours! Please consider giving some of your time to help make Camp Emerson as attractive and inviting as it should be.
