News from MR District

Big day at STEM event

Rockets, robots and catapults. Add 106 Scouts. Mix in a ton of fun. Stir well. Stand back.

That was the recipe for success at the Mt. Rubidoux / 5 Nations District STEM Day conducted March 11.  The daylong event drew 101 Cub and Boy Scouts plus five Girl Scouts.

Boy Scouts discussed three  hours worth of documentaries on space exploration with JPL scientists, learned about projectile physics with an air cannon and potential and kinetic energy with catapults, earned their Astronomy merit badge and STEM Nova Award “Shoot,” explored the stars in a planetarium and with telescopes and  hosted a Star Party for Cub Scouts.

Cub Scouts built rubber band powered cars, sailing boats, paper airplanes, robotic hands, trash-bots, catapults, rockets, and a model of a robotic space rover.  In these activities, they learned about the physics of flight, potential / kinetic energy, basic robotics principles, and more.  They also had an opportunity to discuss the Mars Curiosity Rover documentary with a JPL scientist.

Cub Scouts earned the Cub Scout STEM Nova Award "Out of this World" plus the  Wolf Program Motor Award Adventure, Bear Program Robotics Adventure and Webelos Engineering Activity Badge.

Guest speakers included Dr. Morgan L. Cable of JPL and Dr. Mario De Leo-Winkler, Physics and Astronomy Department at UC Riverside.

Making it happen were many volunteers including John Skiff, Anastasia Leveck, Denice Pedroza, Mandy Widmer, Josh Widmer, Michael McBride, Brandon Arias, Stephen Granata, Richard Hasler, Paul Van Hulle  and the Van Hulle family, Heather Reese, Danette Miller, and UC Riverside. Youth staff included  Jacob Poole, Cody Simons, Jessica Fu, Christopher Iverson, and Daniel Dorr, William Freeman, the Rosenberg family and the Scouters from Troop 574, the George Family, and many, many more.

The event also included leaders from all over CIEC  and the San Diego.

STEM Day was held at the LDS Church on Blaine Street.

Thoughts from the Scout Executive:

Positive Prayer and Quote
--------------------------------

The Prayer of St. Patrick

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea,
Stability of the earth,
Firmness of the rock.

I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me;
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's hosts to save me
Afar and anear,
Alone or in a multitude.

Amen.

"Girls should be brought up to be comrades not helpers, not to be dolls. They should take a real and not a visionary share in the welfare of the nation."

~Robert Baden-Powell
