Hunting Lodge

Waite Phillips knew a good suprise! He saw a beautiful little meadow above the banks of Cimarroncito Creek, and built the "Cito" Hunting Lodge in 1926. Those early days saw the lodge used primarily as a retreat and hunting camp for Phillips and his guests. The limited fishing opportunities of the Cito Creek soon expanded as construction of the Cimarroncito Dam and Reservoir, a short distance downstream, also began in 1926.

The location of the Hunting Lodge was chosen as the site for one of Philmonts early staff camps...Cimarroncito. It was used as a base camp similar to Ponil in Philmont's early days with a commissary and corrals full of horses and burros. "Cito" moved up the canyon to its current location in the mid-1940s. The Hunting Lodge spent the next several decades being used primarily by Training Center groups, local Scout troops and ranch employees for campouts and special events. In the early 1990s, the Kanik winter camping program used the campsites around the lodge as a base area for day trips of cross-country skiing or hikes around the region. That use has continuted, and now includes snowshoeing with present Winter Adventure program.

After nearly 70 years of use, the lodge was in need of some repairs. In the mid 1990s a Philmont cabin restoration crew used native timber to replace logs that were in poor condition. The crew also treated the remainder of the cabin and re-chinked walls as needed. In 2002 the Hunting Lodge opened as a staff camp. Staff members dressed in garb of 1930s guests at the lodge now greet participants and offer tours of Phillips' historic lodge. Evening programs include fly fishing excursions to the Cito Reservoir and instruction of crews in the fine art of biscuit making. You ought to schedule a trek for next summer and check them out-they're worth the hike!

Thanks Troop 318!

Dear Matt and George,

I love the new website troop318.com! I know it will be a valuable tool as you strive to grow the pack and the troop. The videos are so nice and I’m sure the parents and their sons will see the enthusiasm of the Scouts and you both. Terrific! I’ll share this with Tina to remind her that this is how we could improve our district website. I’ll also pass it on to Joe Daniszewski as a way to add video to our council website. Lots of councils are now adding videos on their home pages. It looks so professional and is a great recruiting tool. Much better than static photos.

Thanks for your continued leadership of Pack 318 and Troop 318.

YIS,

Frank

Thoughts from the Scout Executive:

Positive Prayer & Quote
--------------------------------

"Happiness is open to all, since, when you boil it down, it merely consists of contentment with what you have got and doing what you can for other people."

~Robert Baden-Powell

Let us Fast

While fasting with the body,
brothers and sisters,
let us also fast in spirit.
Let us loose every bond of iniquity;
let us undo the knots of every contact
made by violence;
let us tear up all unjust agreements;
let us give bread to the hungry
and welcome to our house
the poor who have no roof to cover them,
that we may receive mercy.
