5 Reasons To Spend A Week @ Scout Summer Camp Instead of The Office!

With warm weather upon us, it only gets harder to stay indoors all day long. If you’re still deciding where you’ll spend your summer escape, we have the answer— Scout summer camp!

Keep reading for five convincing reasons why you should spend a week at a Scout summer camp from Bryan on Scouting, then head to his blog for the full list!

1. You’re at a place where songs and skits are encouraged.

“We break into chants, songs and skits at camp. Never have I seen this at the office!”

– Kris H.

2. You get to unplug for a week.

“No Internet, no Wi-Fi, minimal cell service. Disconnected from the real world. Just Scouting in the woods.”

– Tad M.

3. You make lifelong memories.

“It is the one week each year that my boys (currently a Bear and a Wolf) talk about — nonstop — for the other 51 weeks! We make memories and have experiences that last a lifetime.”

– Crystal B.

4. You see young people become leaders.

“Just to see the Scouts take charge of themselves is the most wonderful experience one can have.”

– Clara S.

5. You learn something new.

” I always learn something new, and it’s so much fun seeing the growth and sense of accomplishment the boys have! The fact that it’s a week out of the office is a bonus!”

– Barbara P.

National Trails Day Shoreline Cleanup @ Lake Perris SRA

National Trails Day was created by the American Hiking Society to encourage people to explore and celebrate their local County, State, and National Parks. To celebrate this year's National Trails Day on June 3, the Aca Chapter of Cahuilla Lodge coordinated with the Council Outdoor Ethics Committee to host a shoreline cleanup on Alessandro Island at Lake Perris SRA. We had 17 scouts and adult leaders use kayaks and canoes to paddle out to the island to collect the refuse.

Upon reaching the island scouts began maneuvering their boats into the riparian areas to collect trash that couldn't be reached from shore. Then, we cleaned up a large tract of beach on the backside of the island.

After dropping off trash bags from the shoreline cleanup many of the scouts paddled the kayaks 2 miles west to Sail Cove where a potluck lunch awaited them. After lunch many of the scouts, their siblings, and even some of the parents spent the rest of the day playing around in the kayaks. You know that everyone's had a good time when you still have people out in the kayaks or chatting with each other onshore until well after 6:30PM.

We had great weather and a great time at a great place. Special thanks to: Paula Boothe for providing the canoes and helping run the service project; Troop 262 for the use of their kayaks; members of Troops 180, 106, 148, 444, 50, and crew 377 for being a part of the service project; members of the Aca Chapter for hosting the service project; Teresa Flug; Nicole Fenstermaker; Vickey Hermes; Jacqueline Ramos; and the Rangers at Lake Perris SRA.

We are very grateful to ACA chapter and especially James Hermes for his devotion to this project for National Trails Day.

It is not easy to coordinate all of the pieces that need to be in place for such a great event to happen. Units keep coming back because it is a meanini-gful project for our boating community and FUN!  James always has FUN planned to end the event. Thank -you James for all you do to make this fine event happen. Please put the first Saturday in June on your calendars for National Trails Day 2018.

Learn More About the Business of Running a Camp At PTC Conference

Make plans this fall to attend the Strategic Analysis for Council Properties conference at Philmont Training Center.

Aimed at both professionals and volunteers who have planning responsibilities for council properties, this one-week, interactive seminar explores the business fundamentals that drive our camping program.

The conference, planned for PTC's Week 11 (September 17 – 23), explores the content and nature of the BSA's outdoor program in the context of a product that we intend to sell. Equally important are the tactics we use to deliver the product, including price, promotion, and position. By taking a “deep dive” into these concepts, the attendees will develop the tools and understanding to analyze camping operations and fully understand what it costs to run a camp. On completion, the attendees will be able to create a sound plan for the business of running a camp.

For more information, visit PTC's conference website.

To help you spread the word about the importance of this effort, the Youth Protection Team has several new posters available for councils to print and post in facilities, camps, etc.

Positive Prayer & Quote
--------------------------------

A Father's Day Prayer

God,
Bless all the fathers in the world. Father, we ask that you guide them to be good role models and loving to their children. We also ask that You help them to be a father like You are. Give them grace and patience to handle situations in a loving way."

Amen.

"Happiness is open to all, since, when you boil it down, it merely consists of contentment with what you have got and doing what you can for other people."
