| | | | | August 21st, 2017 | New | OA Ordeal | | This last weekend Cahuilla Lodge held their second ordeal induction of the year at Boseker Scout Reservation. 67 Scouts and scouters completed the ordeal and became the newest members of the Order of the Arrow. 24 current OA members we're able to seal their ties of Brotherhood and attained Brotherhood membership in our order. We had some ambitious work projects on our task list including building a trail to the outpost camp on the northwest section of the camp property, filling pipes full of cement at the climbing wall in the low COPE course, and treating the lumber that has been donated for the Camp Emerson Chapel. We are proud to report that all of our primary projects, secondary projects, and even 3rd tier projects work completed during the Ordeal Induction weekend. The cheerful service displayed was exemplary from our newest and current Arrowmen. A special thank you to Tim F. for serving as the task master and Ethan P. For serving as the ordeal master. Another special thank you to Navajo, Wanakik, A-tsa, Tahquitz, and Navajo chapters for performing the Friday and Saturday evening ceremonies. | New | Fall is Here! Make Sure to Update YOUR Unit's BeAScout Pins Today So Families Can Find You! | | Today’s parents want, and expect, to learn more about the BSA through a simple-to-use, nicely designed website. BeAScout.org is that website. It is the first thing many prospective Scouting families see about the BSA, and it tells them what Scouting is, why it’s a good fit for their family and where they can find a pack, troop, crew or ship near them. When moms and dads visit BeAScout.org, they can enter their ZIP code to find all the Scout units near them. These results show up as either council-owned pins, with each representing a local council, or unit-owned, which represent nearby packs, troops or crews. Council-owned pins give parents the council’s website or phone number. Unit-owned pins allow parents to communicate their interest directly to the unit leader. This Scouting Wire post outlines the steps for updating your BeAScout.org pin. Last year, there were more than 600,000 visits to BeAScout.org. This year, that number could be even higher. That’s because the BSA will put some money into paid search results and boosted posts on Facebook — both directing traffic to BeAScout.org. That will ensure that prospective Scouting families come out in full force to the site this fall. Once there, they’ll learn about Scouting, find units and access the lead form and membership application in the BSA’s new online registration system. (You can read the full article on Scouting magazine's "Byan on Scouting" blog, as well as other fall recruiting tips in the latest issue of Scouting Wire.) | New | Adventure Weekend | | There will also be a five feet wide by eighteen feet long Boy Scout Summer Camp display made entirely out of Lego pieces, built by CIEC Scouter Suzanne Lentchner. It has hundreds of mini-figure Scouts on it, dressed in custom created and absolutely accurate uniforms, and all the details of the camp strictly follow BSA guidelines. In addition, there will be several Lego play tables set up and Lego pieces supplied for fun building by anyone who wants to build, adults included. Build something, and leave it on the display table all day (sorry, but you can't take the bricks home). We are also planning on having our Pinewood derby track again for racing Lego cars built on-site by Scouts. This has always been one of the most popular attractions of the weekend for the last several years (and for this reason we limit each Scout to three races only---otherwise they want to stay there all day). There will also be information for Cub leaders on how to hold their own Lego-built Pinewood Derby as a Summertime Pack Activity, along with sample Lego race cars. A collection of very unique regular Pinewood cars will also be on display. --- Yours in Scouting, Lance Paulson, SM T-303 .png) | New | Eagle Court of Honor | | On August 5th Trenton Visyak held his Eagle Court of Honor with the help of the Order of the Arrow’s Ceremony Team. Trenton is a member of the OA’s Ceremony Team, was the A-TSA Chapter Chief for 2016, and earned his Brotherhood in 2015. He is a member of Troop 40 in Grand Terrace and Venture Crew 1110 in Rialto both within the Arrowhead District. For his eagle project, Trenton worked with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Search & Rescue Division on a GPS location project to be used for evacuation during fires or other natural disasters. He worked with Search & Rescue personnel, civic leaders, and volunteers to ensure this project was a success. Trenton along with 16 volunteers worked over 400 community service hours to complete this project. Summer is winding down, and a new school year is beginning – just like it did last year, and the year before. Through this predictable repetition in our calendar and Your creation, we see Your faithfulness. Help us to look at the sunrise and remember that You always keep Your promises. As we approach another transition sending our kids back to school, conflicting emotions wrestle within us. New fears jostle with new hopes. We’re happy to send our children back to the classroom, and sad to see them go. We delight in their excitement, and worry with them over the unknown. Calm our hearts, Lord, and give us a peace that passes understanding. | Monday Memo is from Scout Executive Joe Daniszewski and contains his reflection on what is happening within the Council.
