One thing that I enjoyed at camp is wehn I went to swimming class. One reason I liked taking swim class is because I learned moves that could save my life. My camp experience overall was great because we had most things prepared to keep us busy. From Jayson Dear Ms. Whitman, I would like to thank everyone who contributed sending me to camp. I enjoyed the food, art, and rifleshooting. Environemtnal science was the class where I fell asleep the most, mostly because we did samething everyday. And my favorite part of camp was lunch and dinner. The food was really good and always made me wait in the seconds line everyday. Joey N. Dear Campership Committee, Thank you for your donations your food was very good. I also earned three merit badges for example Archery I was the only kid in the camp to hit a bullseye and thank you very much for that, I also earned my movie making and my swimming merit badge. From Mar P. Grayback District Dear Emerson Campership Committee, Thank you very much for the generous gift allowing me to attend Camp Emerson. While I was there, I enjoyed the rifle range and was able to earn my merrit badge for rifle shooting. I also enjoyed the swimming and I earned the merrit badge for swimming too. The trail to first class helped me get alot of requirements signed off. Thank you again for providing me the opportunity to attend Camp Emerson, thank you! Matthew B., Grayback District Dear Camp Committee, Camp was a fun and cool. From Paul D. Dear Campership Committee, Thank you for sponsoring me to go to camp Emerson. You really helped out my mom because I'm a very active child, with Boy Scouts and sports. New | Welcome Brian Muller | | Hi, My name is Brian Muller and I’m the new District Executive for the High Desert. I have been a dedicated scout since I was 8 years old. I started in pack 444 in the San Gabriel Council where I earned the Arrow of Life. I then joined the ranks of the Boy Scouts where I earned the Eagle Scout rank at age 14. I was an active member of the Order of the Arrow (Vigil honor) where I took on many leadership roles which include lodge Secretary and Lodge Chief for two years. I motivated by team to win the Spirit Stick at the Regional Conclave. I was also on the dance and ceremonial teams. At the end of my Order of the Arrow career as a youth, I was honored with the Founders Award. I graduated from Cal Poly, Pomona in business with an emphasis on Management, Human Resources, and marketing. I was active in a professional fraternity and a Jewish Fraternity including playing the clarinet in the bank. I also coordinated the Field Tournament for one year. After graduation, I landed a job at Kmart. I worked for a variety of retailers for approximately 15 years until Montgomery Wards “Wards” went out of business and I was commissioned for the first time in the Boy Scouts of America at the Golden Empire Council in Sacramento. My District team and I were successful in earning the Quality District award in 2000. With the help of awesome volunteers where we could successfully meet all indicators. After Boy Scouts of America, I spent more time bonding with my children, two boys, 12 and 14 now, and worked for Goodwill industries of Sacramento where I was an administrative Assistant for the Vice-President of Facilities/Special projects. After Goodwill for about 6 years, I joined the Sacramento Job Corps Center where I was an executive assistant to the Student Services Director. The most rewarding part of my job history was that I worked for non-profits and less then favorable areas. Today, I’m so honored to be commissioned again, and that I could join the ranks in the California Inland Empire Council. My goals are to maintain and create a culture of trust between the Council and the District by being a support to all units in the High Desert. This includes a strong District Committee, Commissioner Staff, program, financial plan, training plan, and that everything we do is for the benefit of the youth in this organization. | New | Primitive Camping & Good Turn Weekend | | Service to Camp Helendade is open to all Friends of Helendade, Scouts, Troops, Teams and Crews There are many work projects that need to be done. CLICK HERE for Registration Form | | Eagle Scout Project Idea | | Thank you for your consideration. I am in dire need of a ramp so I can get in and out of my house; it is a mobile home. Both my hips and knees are forgone due to osteoarthritis. I was the final caregiver for my parents-they died a year ago-and I did not take care of myself in favor of taking care of them; so all of this care is up to me. I am single on a fixed income and on permanent disability. I know through my family's experience with the scouts that sometimes Eagle Scouts do projects involving helping elderly people such as building ramps; so I thought I would ask if you knew of anyone who could help me in the Southern California area. I live in Rancho Cucamonga and I am 65. Thank you for your consideration. West Endowment Fellowship | | | A Scout Salute for all the time, talent and treasure you share on behalf of our Scouts! Would you consider joining the James E. West Endowment Fellowship in 2017? | Ralph Waldo Emerson observed that “an institution is the lengthened shadow of one man” Today, Scouting is the “lengthened shadow” of the farseeing and dedicated leadership provided by Dr. James E. West. In 1910, James E. West became the first Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America, and he served in that position for more than three decades. The James E. West Fellowship Award is available for gifts of $1,000 and up in cash or marketable securities to the Council Endowment Fund. The gift must be in addition to and not replace or diminish the donor’s annual Friends of Scouting support. Many individuals and corporations make these gifts either on behalf of someone else, such as in honor of an Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver recipient, a retirement, a special accomplishment, or anniversary or in memory of a special individual. If an institution is truly “the lengthened shadow of one man,” it is more than fitting that the BSA honor James E. West’s monumental contributions to Scouting in such a significant way. Please support our California Inland Empire Council! What a great way to honor Scouting! You may designate a family member, Scout or Scouter as a Memorial or Tribute as well. New | Philmont Training Center | | Greetings from the Philmont Training Center! The 2017 Philmont summer season has ended. One more week of PTC conferences will take place in September. A total of 3450 participants and family members from across the country took part in Philmont Training Center adventures. Below is a copy of your 2017 Philmont Training Center Camping Report. We have included the family members in your report. The list also includes NAYLE youth participants and faculty. Each conference participant had an opportunity to take part in outstanding training guided by key volunteers and professionals. The report lists the conference that each participant experienced. Please reach out to these individuals to encourage them to share their training with others in your council. The 2018 PTC Invitation Process and Conference listing will be distributed on August 31. We will be asking each district and council to share names and contact information of key volunteers with us. Identifying key volunteers who would benefit from additional training is an important part of the process We look forward to supporting your council at the Philmont Training Center. Mark Anderson Director of Program | New | Message From the Office of the Chief Scout Executive-Girl Scouts of the USA Letter | | Earlier this week, the Girl Scouts of the USA sent a letter to BSA National President Randall Stephenson expressing concern about our exploration of ways to include the entire family in some of our Scouting programs. Although our discussion about making Scouting more accessible to families has been discussed in the media since April of this year - the letter suggested that the BSA has been involved in “a covert campaign” to add girls to BSA programs. Because this letter has already resulted in media coverage, and may generate questions for you, I’d like to provide some perspective. As you know, the BSA’s executive leadership team has spent months reaching out to both our stakeholders and community to explore ways of addressing the needs of today's busy families in a mutually beneficial manner. Since June, we also reached out to the GSUSA to find a time to discuss this matter, clarify our intent and identify potential areas of cooperation in the future. We felt this conversation was an important step that allowed us to share the real concerns we receive from families about finding ways that we can incorporate the entire family, both boys and girls, in the Scouting program. We emphasized that no decisions have been made, and shared our belief in the benefit of single-gender programs. We are disheartened to see the Girl Scouts pull away from the possibility of cooperation to help address these needs. While our programs have different methods, our goal is the same and one that is deserving of mutual respect - the development of young people into strong, contributing members of society. Moving forward, we will continue to have conversations with our members and volunteers to see how Scouting can adapt to serve the needs of those already in our family, as well as those we do not yet serve. As we have shown with Exploring, STEM Scouts, Venturing, and Sea Scouts - we will continue to consider new ways to offer flexibility for families to choose the programs that work best for them. We are committed to serving youth, families and communities through programs that deliver character development and values-based leadership training for young people. To that end, we will continue to thoughtfully evaluate how to bring the benefits of Scouting to the greatest number of youth possible - all while remaining true to our mission and core values, outlined in the Scout Oath and Law. Thank you for all you do for America’s youth and their families. Yours in Scouting, Mike Media Response to GSUSA Letter (as of 8/23/17) After months of trying to engage leadership from the Girl Scouts organization about this matter, BSA leadership spoke with Girl Scout leadership earlier this month to identify potential areas of opportunities for alignment in the future. We are disheartened to see the Girl Scouts pull away from the possibility of cooperation to help address the needs of today's busy families.z Based on numerous requests from families, the Boy Scouts has been exploring the benefits of bringing Scouting to every member of the family – boys and girls. No decisions have been made. The Boy Scouts of America believes in the benefit of single-gender programs. But in evaluating the possibility of serving the whole family (something that has been reported on since April), we’ve been having conversations with our members and volunteers to see how to make Scouting accessible for families. The BSA continues to be innovative in our program design, offering programs like Exploring, STEM Scouts, Venturing, and Sea Scouts - four programs that have evolved over the years to serve both boys and girls in new ways and offer flexibility for families to choose the programs that work best for them. The Boy Scouts of America is committed to serving youth, families and communities through programs that deliver character development and values-based leadership training for young people. To that end, the BSA continues to thoughtfully evaluate how to bring the benefits of Scouting to the greatest number of youth possible – all while remaining true to our mission and core values, outlined in the Scout Oath and Law. FAQs (To be used reactively as needed) Is the BSA looking to let girls into its programs? Based on numerous requests from families, the BSA has been exploring the benefits of bringing Scouting to every member of the family — boys and girls, but no decisions have been made. Is a vote taking place? Has a decision been made? No decisions have been made. The organization is currently seeking and getting input from volunteers, chartered partner organizations, parents, youth-development experts and other stakeholders. When will co-ed Scouting go into effect? The BSA strongly believes in the benefit of single-gender programs. We are currently looking at options that would enable us to maintain the strength of single-gender programs while working to meet the needs of today’s families. Does the BSA currently offer co-ed programs? The BSA continues to be innovative in our program design, offering programs like Exploring, STEM Scouts, Venturing, and Sea Scouts — four programs that have evolved over the years to serve both boys and girls in new ways and offer flexibility for families to choose the programs that work best for them. Is the BSA changing its purpose or mission to gain new members? No. The BSA is committed to serving youth, families and communities through programs that deliver character development and values-based leadership training for young people. To that end, the BSA continues to thoughtfully evaluate how to bring the benefits of Scouting to the greatest number of youth possible — all while remaining true to our mission and core values, outlined in the Scout Oath and Law. If this moves forward, would this program compete with Girls Scouts programs? The program discussions we are having right now are about meeting the needs of the entire family, which is something that many youth-serving organizations seek to do in order to serve communities across the country. If the organization decides to move this discussion forward, we hope that it would serve as an additional option for families to consider. Has the BSA disparaged GSUSA? As an organization, we have never disparaged the Girl Scouts of the USA. The Boy Scouts of America deeply respects the organization and the programs it offers girls and their families. Considering how many young girls and boys are not currently served by either of our programs, we believe we owe it to families to explore how we may be able to structure program offerings that fit into their busy lives to deliver character development and values-based leadership training that Scouting promises. | New | Lost & Found | | If you lost something at camp over the summer please reclaim it in 30 days.
