Troop 45 of Highland Holds Scout Sunday Service This past Sunday Boy Scout Troop 45 of the First United Methodist Church of Highland held a Scout Sunday service. Scouts from Troop 45 and Pack 24 were present as all their parents and church members! The boys all had parts in the service. Some of the highlights were that the church listen to the reports on how the unit has grown during the 2011 year. All the fun activities for the boys and over 1,600 hours of community service for the whole unit were presented! The unit also received their Gold Journey To Excellence patches for completing the program. Mr. Michael Bentley was presented the Cross and Flame award from Rev. Cynthia Huskey of the United Methodist Church. After the service there was a great potluck for fellowship!! Great job Troop 45 and Thank you to the First United Methodist Church of Highland!
University of Scouting
Hello Joe & Kevin,
Thanks for such a great day of Scouting. We loved the University! We really enjoyed all of our classes and lunch was fantastic! Special thanks to Sheila for planning the details of such a wonderful event. There was real evidence that those in Scouting are here to serve. Truly, it was amazing to see the best of the best put on an apron and serve lunch too! Thank you.
The only draw-back might be that we didn't seem to have enough time to visit the vendors, but the scope and range of classes was terrific. Most of the attendees from our pack chose different classes, and we all came together at the end of the day for Cub Science. It was sooo fun! Our new Cubmaster was thrilled there were classes specifically for him and my husband especially loved the edible crafts (food!) and the campsite lashings training. Personally, as a woman, I now know how to properly pee in the woods, tie more knots, and make a slide out of something other than pvc. I learned Scouts Own really means that a worship service should be planned by the scouts - their own thoughts, prayers and songs. I liked the information given about Jamboree, and Kevin, your photos of the day are great!
But above all, I learned how wonderful we are doing as a council and area and how proud we should be for achieving such great growth. I know the recent success of our pack can be linked to the excitement we generated from Joe's recruiting promotion and the thrill of the 100th Anniversary.
Thank you for the continued time and effort you give to Scouting in our area.
Yours In Scouting, Susan Park, Pack 421 Corona

OA Overnight Hike in Painted Canyon
Very, very early in the morning of February 12, the Aca Chapter of Cahuilla Lodge hosted an overnight hike in Painted Canyon near Mecca, CA. Twenty five Scouts from Troops 377, 131, and Crew 377 attended a 6 mile hike along a popular trail know as the ladder hike. The trail traverses a spectacular slot canyon that requires hikers to up climb ladders in order to make it to the top of the canyon. Painted Canyon is absolutely beautiful during the day. At night, in the moon light, this place can seem ethereal. Some folks might compare being there at night to hiking on Mars.
The hike began at 12AM. A few times on the trial everyone walked with their flashlights turned off so they could experience the tapestry of moonlight casting shadows on the sandstone cliffs. There were a few places that the canyon was so narrow that Scouts had to walk sideways down the trail.
We wrapped up the hike around 5AM. Despite some weary faces from being up all night, everyone enjoyed themselves and more timeless memories were made to share. Of course, as soon as we catch up on our sleep first. Special thanks to Guy Chabot, Chase Hadden, Patsy Chabot, Steve Hanousek, Mike Sanford, James Hermes, and Marcel Vargas for helping to make this hike happen.

Webelos Explore The Desert By Sandra Emerson, Inland Valley Daily Bulletindailybulletin.com UPLAND - A group of Upland Webelos recently explored the desert. Pack 614, Den 1 traveled to Barstow Saturday to hunt for fossils and rock samples as part of earning their geology badges. The group collected rock and fossil samples at the Rainbow Basin and the Pisgah Crater to present during their badge ceremony this month. The group of 9 9-to-10- year-old Upland boys are currently working their way through Webelos to eventually join the Boy Scouts. From there they will move up to Eagle Scouts. The scouts spent two evenings last month at Cal Poly Pomona working with geologist and former scout, Jason Smith and his wife Melissa who is also a geologist. They learned about plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, minerals, rocks and fossils. The Smiths headed the desert exploration. "The kids love it," Jason Smith said. "They're really into it. It's lots of hands on."

Sample the Pioneer Life at 2013 Jamboree
| Are you excited for the 2013 National Jamboree and the Summit Bechtel Reserve? Good, because we are too! And to make sure the excitement continues to build, the volunteer team leader for all program activities at the 2013 jamboree, Russell Smart, is providing us with monthly updates on the Summit Blog. Last month, Updates from Team Summit featured the popular buckskin games. At past jamborees, buckskin games were part of regional action center activities. But on top of Garden Ground Mountain, these games will be expanded and will include a new area called highland games. |
There, Scouts will have the chance to shoot black-powder rifles, throw tomahawks, toss a caber, and do many other fun and challenging activities. The staff working in these areas will be in period costumes and can answer questions about what it was like to live back in the “pioneer days,” when America was still expanding its Western frontier.
Visit www.BSA-CIEC.org/Jamboree for more information!
Foxfire: Youth Leadership Training
Date: June 9 - 16, 2012 (Saturday Morning - Saturday Morning)
Foxfire will take what a Scout learned at National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and bring it to a whole new level. Scouts will work as a crew to complete many challenges put before them, including Dutch Oven Cooking, Tomahawk Throwing, Black Powder Rifle Shooting, Forging, and other team building games and activities. Beyond developing a better understanding of the Leadership skills taught at NYLT, Scouts will gain knowledge that will help them in the “real world” including resume writing and interview skills. Scouts that have completed Foxfire are sought after for positions on camp and event staffs due to Foxfire’s emphasis on Staff Development. Foxfire is a unique experience that should be the goal of any youth in our Council.
To attend Foxfire, a youth must be 14 years old, have completed NYLT, and if a Boy Scout, have completed Star rank. There is only one course of Foxfire available, so sign up early.
