Welcome to our February 4th, 2013 Monday Memo

Council Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner

What a great Council Volunteer Recogntion Dinner last Saturday!
Kudos to our Silver Beaver recipients and Scout Law honorees.

Scout salute to Dinner Chair and MC Paul Foster.

Our theme was a patriotic one: God Bless America.

Here's how this special song and the BSA tie together:

... The song was originally written by Irving Berlin in 1918 while he served in the U.S. Army at Camp Upton in Yaphank, New York. It was later rewritten in 1938 as a peace song with "some alterations to reflect the different state of the world" during a time when Nazi Germany was threatening war with Europe.

"God Bless America" was originally introduced and performed live on Armistice Day, November 11, 1938 by Kate Smith on her radio program. It became an immediate hit resulting in the popular demand for the sheet music. Afterwards, Berlin established the God Bless America Fund where proceeds from royalties were donated to the Boy and Girl Scouts of America.

‘Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout?’ air date confirmed

tougher-logo

Let the countdown officially begin. Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout?, the National Geographic Channel reality show I first told you about early last year, finally has a confirmed air date. Mark your calendars for 8 p.m. Eastern (7 p.m. Central) on Monday, March 4. The six-episode series continues every Monday night until the season finale on April 8. A Monday night show seems tailor-made for Scouting, because many Scout units meet on Monday nights. Why not make watching the show a part of your weekly meeting? Scouts or Scouters could facilitate a discussion about the show during the commercial breaks and after it’s over.

Now’s the time to check your provider’s programming guide to make sure you subscribe to a TV package with the National Geographic Channel. Here’s the channel number for a few major TV providers: DirecTV, 276; Dish, 186; Verizon FiOS, 121 (SD) 621 (HD); ATT U-Verse, 265 (SD) 1265 (HD).

Need something to tide you over until March? First read Scouting magazine’s behind-the-scenes look at the show.

Foxfire Youth Leader Training

The new Foxfire Youth Leader Training is an exciting update of a unique program where young men enhance their leadership skills. Scouts will expand upon the team building and ethical decision making skills learned at National Youth Leadership Training.

Foxfire uses mountain man history as a theme on which the program is built upon. The three components of Foxfire – Foxfire skills, mountain man and leadership – teach leadership, teamwork and the lessons of selfless services. Foxfire offers Scouts an exciting experience based on American history, using the core elements of NYLT to make their leadership skills intuitive.

Foxfire will equip youth leaders to be better troop leaders, youth leader training staff members and/or superior camp staff. It will help guide their journey to become true “servant leaders,” able to develop all members of whichever team they lead. It provides life skills for now and the future.

At Foxfire, Scouts will hammer steel into tomahawks at a real forge, shoot black powder rifles, rappel off a climbing tower, bond as a team on an obstacle course, perform a conservation project and prepare themselves for the big leadership challenge: Planning and conducting a day of the course! National Youth Leadership Training

NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training) is advance leadership training for youth troop, team and crew leaders. NYLT is leadership training for young men and young women. National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action packed program designed to provide youth members of the Boy Scouts of America with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops, teams or crews. NYLT teaches life long leadership skills.

NYLT uses the patrol method to teach team leadership. The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what a leader must KNOW and what a leader must DO. NYLT provides youth leaders with the HOW TO skills they need to be strong youth and strong youth leaders.

Two great courses for 2013; Course One will be June 10 to 15. Course one invites Scouts, Venturing young men and Venturing young women to attend. Course Two will be June 17 to 22. Course two invites Scouts and Venturing young men to attend Start your quest for the meaning of leadership by signing up for NYLT today.

Junior Shoot Program

This program meets the requirements for the Boy Scouts of America’s Rifle merit badge and is run by trained and registered BSA merit badge counselors. Shooters can work on their shooting portion of the Rifle Merit Badge. (Due to time constraints, it is recommended that the non-shooting portions of the rifle merit badge be completed prior to the shoot.)

Shooters will have the opportunity to earn levels of competency in the NRA Marksmanship Program (light rifle category). This program provides incentive awards for developing and improving marksmanship skills. Performance is measured against standards established by the Marksmanship program and any shooter who meets or exceeds the standards receives corresponding recognition awards for that rating. Click Here for more Info

"May we all remain fast and firm in faith, that the glory of glories may rest upon us. Thou art the Gracious, the Bountiful, the Merciful, the Compassionate."
