Council Annual Volunteer Dinner a Great Success!

On Saturday, February 4, the California Inland Empire Council celebrated its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner at the Moreno Valley Conference & Recreation Center with over 260 guests. The Honorable Paul Foster, council board member and Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Redlands, helped recognize the accomplishments of great volunteer Scouters. Vice President of Program Matt Flanagan awarded the Prepared for Life Award to a group of volunteers who have made an impact to Scouting in their community: Mt. Rubidoux Troop 2, Rick Cales, Richard Endsley, Tom Marino, Ken Nordstrom and Richard Puckett Jr. To view pictures from the event, please CLICK HERE FOR PHOTO ALBUM.

For the first time, a silent auction was held which raised over $2,300 for the council's campership programs.

UCR Merit Badge Day

UC Riverside held its first of two merit badge fairs this year on January 28th, promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) within Boy Scouts. Organized by UCR’s Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineer (IEEE) student society, the merit badges Electricity, Electronics, and Computers were offered to over 110 scout participants that came from all over Southern California. Approximately 60 UCR students helped with the different activities and Mt. Rubidoux District’s Crew 2 assisted with the administrative process and lunch. Another merit badge fair is planned for April 14th, offering the merit badges Energy, Engineering, and Robotics.

International Scouting Committee Report

Thanks to Mike Downs, Bill Dull, Robin Lund, and Joaquin Ancona for their support and involvement as members of the CIEC International Scouting Committee (ISC)at and for the University of Scouting (UoS) on 1/28/12.

-At the UoS, materials on the:
a) International Camporee,
b) upcoming Korean National Jamboree and possible inclusion in the BSA National Contingent, and
c) forms on the Internal Activity Badges were distributed.

All of the pertinent information is already on the CIEC website on the ISC Home Page (under the Activities tab). The ISC Home page will be undergoing continuous development and updating.

1. Two new patches were put on display. The first is a set of four ISC CSPs distinguished by their different borders. The price of the individual ISC CSPs if bought separately would be $85. The border colors and prices are white, red, silver, and gold at $5, $10, $25, and $45. If bought as a set the price for the four patches will be $70.

2. The second patch (CSP) is one reserved, initially, for members of the CIEC contingent to the International Camporee with Mexico at Camp Mataguay on May 18-20, 2012.. Only those who are registered to attend the camporee will be able to buy the CSP prior to the camporee. Each registrant will be able to buy one CSP at $3.00 and any additional ones at $4.00. All purchases will be through the ISC and may only be made by and through a registered unit ...not by individuals. After the camporee, any of the camporee CSPs which remain available may be purchased by anyone at $5.00 per CSP.

3. The International Camporee with Mexico hosted by San Diego Imperial Council will be limited to 1000 registrants. Bill Dull of the CIEC ISC is a member of the camporee organizing committee.

Unless indicated otherwise, all sales on any ISC CSP will go through Mike Downs. The purpose of the sale of the CSPs (i.e., any by the ISC) is to develop funds to repay the CIEC for advancing any amount by the CIEC to the International Division of the BSA so that the CIEC can participate in the international Camp Staff program. All efforts coordinating the CIEC's participation in the international camp staff program will be through Marcel Vargas

4. The three International Activity Badge Forms (for Cubs, for non-Cub youth, and for Adults) have been placed into the final form. Bill Dull has transmitted them to Ruben Velarde (CIEC webmaster). Ruben will place them in a 'Forms' subtab on the ISC Home Page. They will be 'fillable' on-line with the exception of the signature blocks. This is where all pertinent forms will appear. Such forms will include applications for inclusion into national contingents, and (as we get them) registration materials for any international activity, the International Scouter's Award and others.

5. The next committee meetings will be:

4/17/2012 @ 7:00PM
7/17/2012 @ 7:00PM
10/16/2012 @ 7:00PM
All meetings to be held at: Triad Magnetics
22520 B Temescal Canyon Rd.
Corona, California 92883, 951-277-0757

6. The CIEC ISC is always looking for new members who wish to be actively involved in the promotion and development of CIEC participation in the international aspects of the Scouting movement. Each District is encouraged to identify at least one Scouter who is willing to be an active participant on the CIEC ISC. All recommendations of potential members, with information on the nominees Scouting background, should be directed to the CIEC ISC International Representative, Mike Goldware (magoldware@aol.com).

7. The ISC is looking for a skilled and knowledgeable internet savvy Scouter who is experienced in Scouting and the use of the internet and who might have the desire, time, and possibly money to serve on a National JOTI (Jamboree on the Internet) Committee which is being formed. The CIEC ISC has received a request from the International Division of the BSA for an expression of interest by a member of our council for possible appointment to the new national committee,.

8. The CIEC ISC will be experimenting with a WebEx or committee meeting with members at remote locations. The intention is more active involvement by members who are widely separated from each other and who may have difficulty making ISC meetings. This effort is being led by Justin Welch.

Mike Goldware, International Representative, CIEC

Get Your Scouts Signed Up for NAYLE

Send your Scouts to NAYLE, the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience, and watch their leadership skills soar.

Who’s eligible? Boy Scouts or Venturers (male or female) who are at least 14 but not yet 21, hold a unit leadership position, and have completed National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) are eligible.

Participants join a team of peers from across the country. They’ll work together to absorb innovative training techniques, learn the latest leadership skills, and understand how to instantly apply all of the course’s time-tested lessons to their troop or crew back home.

All in just one week! And all for just $355.

Most of the sessions are held at the iconic Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Because of the program’s popularity, there are now six sessions at Philmont. The first begins June 17, and the sixth kicks off Aug. 5. Three regional sessions at other locations are being planned for this summer.

Help spread the word about NAYLE to the troops and crews in your council. To register, they’ll need to log in to MyScouting and click on the Events Registration tab. If Scouts or their parents want more information, send them to philmontscoutranch.org/PTC/YouthPrograms/NAYLE.aspx or to facebook.com/BSANAYLE.

Here's What to Expect

An email survey sent twice each year to measure the value of Scouting for your family.

A unique opportunity to highlight issues you believe are important for improving your family's Scouting experience.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Conference at Philmont

STEM in Scouting, Philmont Training Center, Week 1, June 10—16

By attending this symposium adults will learn how to implement the NOVA and SUPERNOVA awards within their council and help create a plan for future STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) initiatives in Scouting. This symposium is open to all Scouters who wish to learn, share and engage in the BSA’s new STEM initiative. Guest instructors will attend and talk about STEM activities, and experiences in their councils.

Scouters who have been identified as the council STEM Chair are especially encouraged to attend but participation is not limited to that group. The conference will include hands-on activities that support the NOVA and SUPERNOVA awards and share teaching techniques that can be used to implement these awards while using the aims and methods of Scouting.
