Welcome to our March 11th, 2013 Monday Memo

Boy Scouts of America Values and Membership Standards Review

The Boy Scouts of America is committed to dialogue on its membership standards within the Scouting family at the local and national levels. To continue and expand this important discussion, the National Executive Board has authorized its committees, representative of Scouting’s members, to further engage representatives of Scouting’s membership and listen to their perspectives and concerns.
The committees will review a number of issues and how they will impact the BSA, including youth, chartered organizations, parents, and financial, fundraising, and legal concerns. The goals of the committee’s work will be to:

• Provide a channel where every voice can be heard
• Receive feedback from the field
• Educate Scouting’s members
• Define core values
• Identify members’ concerns

The committee’s recommendations will inform the officers’ work on a resolution regarding membership standards. The voting members of the National Council will take action on the resolution at the National Annual Meeting in May 2013.

Greyback District Leave No Trace Trainer Course

CIEC Greyback District hosted their first Leave No Trace Trainer Course at the Jurupa Mountains Discovery Center (JMDC). Sherrie Reynolds, the Outdoor Ethics Representative for Greyback District, served as the course coordinator and worked with JMDC Board member Wes Andree to make the course run smoothly and the facility and staff were terrific.

John Gonering was the lead for this course and he recruited an awesome staff. Terese Romagnano,Summer Pearson ,Kyle Gonering all Leave No Trace Master Educators and Trainers Corey, Sherrie Reynolds and Dennis Babcock did an outstanding job despite wind and rain.

Participants came from several districts to complete Wood Badge ticket items and Venturing Leave No Trace Core requirement for the Ranger Award.  Crews 100(5N) and 11 (GB) and Sea Scout Ship 195(HD) made up a large portion of the course.

Great job Greyback! We have 17 more Leave No Trace Trainers in CIEC.

Do you want to give us your opinion on possible changes to the BSA Membership Standards?

Did you submit updated email addresses with your recharter?

If so, you should be receiving a Voice of the Scout Survey sometime between March 8 and March 15.
As a part of that survey, all adults will be asked some questions about possible changes in the BSA membership standards, as well as their opinions about Scouting programs.

If not, you can still get the survey by clicking here to register your email. You will need your membership ID number to register (if you don’t know it the council can help, call 909-793-2463 extension

Redlands Boy Scout accepts National Geographic reality show challenge

REDLANDS - For Redlander Rio Gifford, spending a few weeks in the Sierra Nevada Mountains last summer was not only a vacation, it was a job.
The 18-year-old Redlands High School senior was one of 10 Boy Scouts across the country to participate in a new reality series on the National Geographic Channel, "Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout?"

The six-episode series allows adults the opportunity to face off against a team of Scouts in a variety of challenges based on skills featured on the organization's handbook with the goal of finding one adult "tougher" or better prepared than a Scout.

Gifford auditioned for the show last year after he received notice of a casting call for the program - which premiered on Monday

He traveled to Los Angeles for his first interview, and it was a success.

Scouts aren’t immune to Harlem Shake

You knew it was bound to happen.

The Harlem Shake, the Internet meme that came from nowhere last month and is now impossible to avoid, has caught the eye of more than a few Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs.

Scouts from Salt Lake City, Puerto Rico, and several places in between have created their own versions of the viral video, which starts with one person dancing alone for 15 seconds before a quick cut to a chaotic group dance lasting another 15 seconds.

Positive Quote & Prayer
------------------------------------

" Our nation is only as strong as the boys we prepare for manhood"

~  Rena Pederson, The Dallas Morning News

"Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy."

    ~  Saint Francis of Assisi
