Good day and welcome to our March 22nd Monday Memo
100th Anniversary Scout Shop Birthday Party Contest

Let's Have a Party!
This was the assignment given to 160 Scout Shop Managers. Let's have a birthday party to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of BSA! As we all know, February 8th of this year was officially the 100th birthday of Boy Scouts of America. Sales/Planning & Development celebrated this great milestone by throwing a birthday party in all of our National Scout Shops on February 8th. Each shop displayed a "Happy 100th Birthday BSA" banner and invited everyone, volunteers, customers and council staff, to join the celebration. The Scout Shop with the best birthday party received a personal cash prize from former Department Manager Rick Diles and their picture in What's Official.
The competition was tough. Each Scout Shop Manager submitted pictures and a brief write up on their event with the hopes that they would win the title of best party! A lot of great parties were held but only one manager could be the winner.
And the Winner is...
We are proud to announce that the Old Baldy Scout Shop has won the National Scout Shop BSA 100th Birthday Party Contest. Congratulations to Store Manager Herlinda Blair, her staff, and the California Inland Empire Council for a grand event.
Old Baldy Scout Shop
Old Baldy Scout Shop offered cookies, brownies, and lemonade throughout the day to our shoppers. The shop was decorated with streamers and balloons. The 100th Anniversary banner was put up in front of the shop so people coming in would know that there was a party going on.
We involved the community in the following way:
The Inland Empire Daily Bulletin sent a reporter to cover all the festivities and the article will be printed in the community section of the paper. The Ontario Police Dept sent officer C.C. with Charlie, The Talking Police Car, to share his message on Danger and Safety. The Ontario Fire Dept put up our Banner and had fun with the kids swinging at the pi?ata from the back of their fire truck. The Ontario Quakes (Single A Baseball Team for LA Angels of Anaheim) sent their mascot Tremor and gave out goodies. The Ontario Reigns Hockey Team sent their mascot Blaze and gave out treats. The Angeles National Forest Rangers gave out souvenirs with fire safety messages and brought out their mascot Smokey Bear. Lazer Island from Upland visited and brought their spinning prize wheel and gave out free rounds of miniature golf and rock climbing. We had "Pin the Tail on Pedro" and a crayon-coloring table (the pictures are now proudly displayed on our shop windows). All the Scouts and non-scouts attending received party favors (Reminder Bands, Balloons, and pencils) and a hand stamped for each game in which they participated. And we all sang happy birthday when it was time for cake!

2010 Census
The 2010 Census data will affect how more than $400 billion per year in federal funding is distributed to tribal, state and local governments. Census data guide local planning decisions, including where to provide additional social services, establish child-care and senior centers, and build new roads, hospitals, schools and job training and community centers The census will frame the future of our community and our country for the next 10 years, so it is vital that everyone in the United States be counted in 2010.
In March 2010, households across the country will receive the 10-question census form by U.S. mail or hand delivery. Responding immediately to the 2010 Census form is the most efficient way to complete the census. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share respondents? answers with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities.
As a Census Bureau partner, Arrowhead United Way encourages you to participate in the 2010 Census and let the country know what our community needs for the next 10 years.
Please promote the 2010 Census by printing out and posting the attached flyers as well as by circulating this email with its attachments.

Temescal District Centennial Camporee
Camporee for 2010 was a great success. We had 18 units participate. We had over 360 Scouts and Scouters camping. Plus an addition 40 to 60 visitors who attended either the Arrow of Light Ceremony, our Campfire, and our Interfaith worship. We also had our Council President, Jim Prior, talk at our campfire where he told the Story of Scouting beginnings.
I believe our District's Centennial Camporee was the first of many for the year in our Council. Each and every Staff Member should be very proud of themselves. We created numerous memories for all who attended.
Darryl L. Romero, Camporee Chair
Launching the BSA Centennial Silver Dollar
Since the law was signed in the fall of 2008 authorizing the minting of 350,000 silver dollar coins in recognition of the BSA?s 100th Anniversary, there has been almost nonstop interest in when the coins would be available, and how to order one. Now, the time is here!
On March 23, the United States Mint will make available for sale the BSA Centennial Silver Dollar. Proceeds from the coin surcharges will benefit the BSA National Foundation in efforts to bring Scouting into underserved communities. If every coin is sold, $3.5 million will be generated for this very worthy cause. Are you ready to get yours? Beginning at noon ET on the 23rd, coins can be ordered through the U.S. Mint at www.usmint.gov or at 1-800-USA-MINT. For the first thirty days, the proof coin will be offered at $39.95 and the uncirculated coin will be offered at $33.95, after which the prices will be $43.95 and $35.95, respectively.
Be sure to visit the coin webpage on the 100 Years of Scouting website. There, you?ll find information about the coin, its honorary chairman Judge William S. Sessions, and promotional tools you can use at the local level.
Coinciding with the availability of the coin is the National Money Show, which finds itself in Fort Worth, Texas this year in the vicinity of the National Council. Chief Scout Bob Mazzuca will join U.S. Mint Director Edmund Moy on Saturday, March 27 for an official coin launch event. Scouts in uniform and a parent can enter the show at no cost, and there?s even an opportunity after the event for Scouts to participate in a coin collecting merit badge workshop.
We expect this limited quantity of coins to sell fast! What a beautiful keepsake to commemorate our historic 100th Anniversary, while furthering our ability to extend Scouting to every eligible youth in the nation. Together, launching our second century of service!
Bob Mersereau, National Director
100th Anniversary Celebration Project
Troop Open House
Hosting a troop open house is a five-step process that has been tried and proven in troops throughout the nation. Each of the following six steps is vital to the event?s success:
- Present at a school rally to fifth and sixth graders.
- Current Scouts invite their friends to join.
- Mail the parents of interested youth a personal invitation to the troop open house.
- Follow the invitation with a telephone call to the parents.
- Host the troop open house for youth and their parents.
- Organize a troop or district activity to involve new Scouts right away.
Peer-to-Peer Recruitment continues to be the most effective way to recruit new members. It?s easy and fun for Scouts to invite their friends to a Scout meeting or activity with an e-vite found at www.thescoutzone.org
Log on to http://www.thescoutzone.org/ and click on ?Tell a Friend.? Scouts enter their own name and email and a friends name and email address. Scouts then choose photos, music for the e-vite and a message. Use this great recruitment tool to help make your troop open house a great success.
Crew Membership=Unit Health
Venture Crews that are successful hold at least one recruiting event throughout the year. Spring Venturing recruitment is targeted for the month of April. Crew recruiting resource packets are available through your district membership chair or district executive. The Venturing website, http://www.venturingonline.org/, is the place to go for all your Venturing needs. Recruitment materials and activity/event listing and registration forms are all just a click away.
The ?Bring a Friend? recruiting technique is the most effective. Host your own bring a friend event as a crew and show local youth the fun your crew has together. Share your summer program calendar to give them an example of the great adventures they will experience when they join.
Taquitz District Receives 100th Anniversary Proclamation
Wildomar City Mayor Bridgette Moore presented Taquitz District Chair Wayne Chase with a 100th anniversary proclamation. Wildomar is a newly formed city in the district. Mayor Moore, also is a Scouter with Troop 332, the DCD committee and past district popcorn kernel.
Woodbadge 2010
I wanted to make you aware of a great training opportunity for Adult Scout leaders in your Units. Wood Badge for the 21st Century is a training course for Scouting adult leaders. The course provides tools to the adult leaders need to offer a complete and successful Scouting program. Our courses offer instruction in team building, communications, conflict resolution, project planning, diversity and ethics just to name a few. This is the same style of training that is available for the corporate world costing thousands of dollars to attend.
The course is 6 days, held over two weekend time periods. The California Inland Empire Council offers 2 courses a year for our adult Scouters. With this level of commitment from our council, we would like to have all of our adult leaders attend Wood Badge. Click Here for Flyer

"We grow great by dreams. All big men are dreamers. They see things in the soft haze of a spring day or in the red fire of a long winter's evening. Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them; nurse them through bad days till they bring them to the sunshine and light which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true.?
