Monday Memo

Joseph Daniszewski
Scout Executive

Good day and welcome to our March 23rd Monday Memo

1. Every Scout deserves a trained leader!
"This is Scouting" was added to the BSA's on-line Learning Center over the weekend. "This is Scouting" replaces New Leader Essentials as a required course for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing volunteers to earn the "Trained" leader emblem. Councils should eliminate New Leader Essentials from all training calendars and add a link to http://MyScouting.org.

While the primary delivery method for "This is Scouting" is on-line, a DVD . No. 36118, will be available after April 1, from our Scout Shop for areas where internet access is limited or where group presentation is desired.

All Scouters are encouraged to create a MyScouting account and access this training through the MyScouting portal, as credit for this training will be recorded on their PAS record upon completion.

2. California Inland Empire Scouts in Action!
On October 5, 2007, 8 year old Aric Rosenveldt and his brother were eating dinner.  Aric saw his brother turning purple and choking.  Using the first aid training he had learned in Scouts, he administered the heimlich maneuver and was able to dislodge a piece of food stuck in his brother's throat.  For this, he was awarded the Heroism Award. Aric is a Cub Scout in Pack 306 of the First United Methodist Church of Ontario of the Old Baldy District.

3. 2009 Friends of Scouting Successes:
Many thanks for the solid start to our 2009 FOS campaign! Let's give every scouting family and every one of our 22,396 donors the opportunity to sustain our California Inland Empire Council. Let's keep delivering a quality scouting experience to more and more young people!

A Scout is Thrifty:
Super effort this past week. Congratulations to Mt. Rubidoux, Temescal Districts and Learning for Life Division as the front runners to date.

4. Scouting Changes Lives!
Here's another great story from our Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazucca.

Crossing the gap

A recent article in one of our suburban Dallas papers, the Southlake Times, describes a very moving story of a not-your-typical Eagle Scout project that speaks volumes about how what we do affects everyday lives.

Eighteen-year-old Kamron Hakemy of Troop 758 in Carrollton, Texas, visited a number of locations in Southlake to see what Eagle Scout project he could do that would make a difference in the lives of his neighbors and community. When he stopped at Christ Our King Church, he noticed that their prayer auditorium was missing a cross. Kamron pulled a team of 25 together and created a six-foot by four-foot Celtic cross that now hangs in the prayer auditorium.

While this was a unique and worthwhile project, what struck me was how Kamron, a Muslim, crossed the gap of his religious beliefs to create this marvelous gift for a Christian church.  His interview in the Southlake Times included this inspiring quote:

"It was a good way to bridge a relationship between Muslims and Christians," Kamron said. "Doing this project shows that we embrace each other as brothers."

Kamron saw the opportunity to extend his hand across the gap of these two religions and grasped it firmly. When we talk about the Scout Oath and Scout Law, and how they have reached millions as we approach our 100th Anniversary, Kamron's inspiration provides us all a tremendous example of how these founding principles can set the tone for life.

The underlying message here is this: What we do on a daily basis changes lives and affects lives in ways we cannot begin to imagine. What a sad thing it would be indeed if we did not have Scouting in our communities.

I find stories like Kamron's extremely self-sustaining. At the end of the day, it's important for everyone to know how Scouting isn't just about teaching a kid how to rub two sticks together. Kamron's story tells us that we can and do accomplish a great deal more with our kids.

5. Scoutreach Distinguished Citizens Dinner

A grateful Scout Executive salutes you for all you to make a difference in the lives of our young people!

You see things; and you say, "Why?" But I dream things that never
were; and I say "Why not?"
