The day started early Saturday morning when several of us launched our kayaks and paddled out to Alessandro Island to pick up trash along the shoreline as a service project. This wasn't a normal shorline clean up. We used the kayaks to get in to some of the riparian areas that aren't accessible from shore to pick up trash. Although pushing into the reeds was tough at times, the real challenge not scaring the fish and quietly going around the anglers during a fishing tournament. We got a lot of thumbs up and thank yous from the fishermen when they saw what we were doing. After the service project we paddled over to Sail Cove to meet the rest of our group that came for the Aca Chapter Winter Potluck. Some of the youth OA members had their first experience with kayaking that morning. Once they became comfortable with handling the boat and paddle, they had fun racing out to the buoys and bouncing around on the swells. They would have the chance to really hone their skills for an activity we had planned for after the potluck. The potluck began with a bugle call and the awesome sight of the color guard, paddling kayaks, bringing in the US flag. The food that everyone brought was fantastic and one in particular was pretty entertaining. One of the families brought a dessert that consisted of a bucket of crushed brownies mixed with gummy worms. After lunch, youth Arrowmen that had served as Elangomats, on ceremony or service teams, and received their Vigil Honor were all recognized. Our main award that we hand out is the prestigious Chapter Service Award that is presented to an Arrowmen that has the best positive impact on fellow scouts. The 2012 Chapter Service Award was presented to Cameron Stiede and Nicholas Folts for youth. Curtis Stiede received the award for the adult. After the close of the potluck is when the action kicked into high gear. That's when we played a few rounds of kayak football. The scouts that were a little shy in the kayaks a couple of hours before were now paddling warriors, jostling each other's boats and blocking passes with their paddles. The games concluded with only 9 kayaks capsized, several wet and chilly scouts, 2 paddles that almost floated away, and smiles as wide as a sea kayak is long. The day started off with cheerful service and ended with cheers. In other words, a perfect Saturday. Premiering Monday, March 4, at 8 PM ET/PT, and hosted by ex-Army Ranger Charles Ingram, adult "civilians" battle it out with scrappy Scouts in a series of challenges - all based on the Boy Scouts' 100-year-old handbook - designed to test their physical and mental stamina to determine if these adults have what it takes to earn their own "merit badge." Paying visitors this summer can sample some of the same high-adrenaline activities that the Scouts experience. At past jamborees, a lot of the fun stuff — BMX, climbing, shooting sports — was off-limits to visitors. Not this time. But just like an amusement park, all that fun comes at a cost. So brush up now on the 2013 National Scout Jamboree Visitor Policy: Click Here | | The Boy Scouts of America’s ‘Family Discussion’ on our Membership Policy When the Boy Scouts of America reaffirmed its long-held membership policy last June after months of media coverage and national attention to the issue, some leaders thought that signaled an end to the conversation. Not so, as you no doubt know. As BSA President Wayne Perry recently said, many unit-level volunteers weren’t aware of the policy before the reaffirmation. “What we discovered as your Key 3 was that it started a very intense conversation,” he said. In that eight-month conversation, Perry emphasized that he didn’t speak with outside special-interest groups with no affiliation to Scouting. Instead, he said, “I heard only from Scouters, people with different views than my personal views. “It was hard, because people told me their Scouting commitment, and it touched you, it touched your soul. These are good people. They are people of faith that have a different view than I do.” Read More..... International Opportunities International education is a key tool for building "bridges" between countries and cultures. In addition, when ordinary people of any age travel outside of the United States for their first time, their view of the world will likely change into a multicultural respect for others, resulting in a stronger worldwide coalition of friendship, understanding and goodwill. Through scouting, one can get this experience. I know because I did scouting in New Zealand when I was in high school and I have now taken Venturers and Scouts to Brazil (1992 International Jamboree), New Zealand (1995 Venture), Canada (1997 Jamboree), Australia (2000 Venture), Austria (2002 International Hiking Trek), United Kingdom (2007 World Jamboree) and Ukraine (2012 Jubilee).
