Monday Memo
 | Joseph Daniszewski Scout Executive | |
Good day and welcome to our March 8th Monday Memo
Cahuilla Lodge Banquet
A grateful Scout Executive salutes all our Order of the Arrow Members for a great lodge banquet. I was honored to accept a beautiful color photograph of all our Cahuilla Lodge members who attended ArrowCorps5 in 2008. Cahuilla Lodge made history at ArrowCorps5. 66 Arrowmen attend the Manti-La Sal project and a total of 72 people attend 4 of the 5 sites. The Lodge had the largest contingent in the entire country. Kudos to our great Cahuilla Lodge!
Scouting For Adventure on Outdoor Channel TV
Season 2 of Scouting for Adventure will begin airing Thursday?s at 1pm EST and Saturday?s at 7:30pm EST starting the week of March 29. Season 2 will lead into Season 3 which will begin airing in week of June 28 through end of September.
In the show's second year, Scouting for Adventure promises to continue the tradition of top-notch television production, shot in high-definition that motivates, educates and inspires both young and young-at-heart. Each action-packed episode features short segments that pertain to all aspects of Scouting such as merit badges, oaths, safety, gear and knots. Whether it's learning how to properly tie a square knot at Creighton Island, Georgia or emphasizing the importance of beach conservation (utilizing the BSA's Leave No Trace program) in Catalina Island, California, each episode of Scouting for Adventure offers practical advice for all past, present and future scouts.

BSA Youth Delegation Presents Report to the Nation for 2009
 | Since its incorporation in 1910, the Boy Scouts of America is mandated by its national charter to present an annual report of its accomplishments over the last year. A youth delegation is accompanied on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the seat of our national government to eat, play, sleep, and discuss Scouting among our nation's most precious treasures. The BSA is dedicated to ensuring that the news of these great Scouts' stories make it back to their local councils and other local BSA councils across the country. While in Washington this week to deliver the official report, the delegates expressed their desire that their experience help other kids become interested in being a Scout. To that end, the 2009 Report to the Nation Web site, www.scouting.org/rtn is open for anyone to visit. Check it out! |
Scouts and Jeff Gordon, Start Your Engines!
Our 100th Anniversary Celebration is shifting into high gear with some help from Silver Buffalo Jeff Gordon! As part of the annual ?Scout Day at the Races? at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, eight Cub Scouts from the BSA?s Flint River Council had the opportunity to meet, ?talk shop,? and race their Pinewood Derby cars with the four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion.
Gordon joined the Scouts in a pinewood derby competition that was filmed by Fox Sports today. It?s part of a story scheduled to air this Sunday as part of Fox Sports? pre-race coverage of the Kobalt Tools 500. Tune in to watch! If you can?t watch live, set your DVR because it?s going to be fun. Prerace coverage begins at 12 p.m. ET. On Saturday and Sunday, prior to the Camping World Trucks and Sprint Cup Series races, Scouts will also present the colors during the prerace flag raising ceremonies. Any Scout in uniform will be admitted for free to Saturday?s events at the speedway.
Saturday also marks the start of Race to 2010, part of our Get in the Game! 100th Anniversary geocaching program. Pinewood derby cars representing councils, districts, and units across the country will race through this high-tech treasure hunting game. As the cars move from cache to cache, Scouts and Scouters can track their cars? progress online as they head toward the finish line, a cache located near the 2010 National Scout Jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. Prizes?including memorabilia signed by Gordon?will be given out in a variety of categories. If you haven?t reached out to local media or bloggers to tell them about what you?re doing in the race, here is a fact sheetand template press release. Customize to fit your needs, and send along!
Any council, district, or unit can be part of the race! Even if you can?t start tomorrow, you can still join in the fun. All you need is a pinewood derby car and a Travel Bug? tag. If you don?t have a tag, you can purchase one for just $4.25 from Geocaching.com.
Together, launching our next century of service!
Boy Scouts of America on "Jeopardy!"

The venerable quiz show "Jeopardy!" paid tribute to the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America last week with a special category about Scouting.
The "Jeopardy!" Clue Crew took a special field trip to California's Camp Winton for footage to complement the category. And even though the contestants saved the category for last (none of them were Scouts, apparently), the group got each question right.
Were you watching? If not, here's a chance to test your knowledge with the answers and questions from the show. You'll find the five answers below. Write down the questions on a piece of paper, and then check your work by following the jump below.
$200: In 1940 this composer gave the Boy and Girl Scouts all future royalties from the song "God Bless America."
$400: To be a First Class Scout, you have to able to find directions. One way is to place a stick in the ground and wait for the afternoon shadow, which will point this way.
$600: A popular Scouting activity is the throwing of this type of hatchet or axe native to North America.
$800: A traditional skill in Scouting is knowing how to build a fire; one good method is named for this Native American shelter.
$1,000: The first Boy Scout to go on to be the president was this man who, in a youthful letter to his father Joe, asked for a bigger allowance to buy canteens and other Scout supplies.
Follow the jump below to check your work. Good luck!
QUESTIONS:
$200: Who is Irving Berlin?
$400: What is east?
$600: What is a tomahawk?
$800: What is a tepee?

Mt. Rubidoux Eagle Scout Attends West Point
 | The young man in uniform is Asael Flores, an Eagle Scout from Troop/Crew 16. He was a very active Scout and a very good student athlete. He was an important part of our first ever Cahuilla Lodge Ceremony Expert certified team. He has called Rick Pohlers from West Point to let him know how much he appreciates Rick's support over the years and how important scouting was to his being accepted into West Point. He also mentioned how everything he learned as a Scout is helping to keep him there while others are dropping out. He especially credits the Foxfire program for building his leadership skills. He visted with Rick Pohlers while he was home over the Christmas holidays. Judy Graeber |
Scouts in Action - Nice Troop Service Project!
Citizens of Rancho Mirage: Do you have fruit trees that could help feed needy people? Call City Hall for help. They will most likely put you in touch with Robin and then you won't have a care in the world. She is so qualified to assist you in having help sent over to harvest your fruit.
Robin came to my home along with Boys Scouts of America Troop 104, whose leader is Robert, men from City Hall and later the Scouts' parents and siblings. I heard laughter in my yard by the young boys for two hours of tedious harvesting seven heavily laden trees with fabulous fruits. It was amazing.
The fruit is donated to the Hidden Harvest Program. They distribute the fruit to people at homes who have fallen on hard times and many have been forgotten. Don't let your fruit go to waste. Under the auspices of Robin, the scouts, the men of City Hall and the parents of the scouts ? you are all special, wonderful people. I am happy to have met you.
Thank you, Rosalie Warner
