Good day and welcome to our April 12th Monday Memo
Union Pacific and the Boy Scouts of America Celebrate 100 Years of Scouting
 | When Abraham Lincoln is a founding father of your company, people expect great things from you. From building the nation’s transcontinental railroad to delivering the goods Americans use every day, the men and women of Union Pacific continually work to exceed those expectations. UP has come to symbolize both America’s history and its progress, connecting and supporting this country and the communities and people that define it. In much the same way, the Boy Scouts of America is a source of national pride, helping develop leaders for future generations. The UP No. 2010 Boy Scouts of America Locomotive commemorates the organization’s 100th Anniversary and its century of service to the nation. The locomotive, which was unveiled in Houston, Texas, on March 31, 2010, represents these two American icons coming together to celebrate progress, patriotism, and 100 years of Scouting. Scouting Matriarch Pushes To Recruit One Million Scouts
Enumclaw, WA– 2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. To date, Boy Scout membership since 1910 has reached the 112 million mark. In 2007 alone, almost three million youths participated in The Boy Scouts of America. According to the Boy Scouts survey, nearly sixty percent of the 110th Congress participated in Scouting.
Author and speaker Eleanor Clark is on a personal mission to see one million new Boy Scouts recruited and a nation changed for the better. As a third generation scouting grandmother, she feels training young people is the only way to reclaim our nation.
“A country is only as strong as its youngest citizens. Reach the children with fundamental values, and you reach a nation. Scouting does just that, I’ve seen it in my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren,” says Clark.
Through her new book, The Legacy of Lord Baden-Powell, a fiction narrative about the founder of the Scouting movement, Eleanor Clark lays the groundwork to reach as many boys as possible. Her intent is to rally current Scouts to learn the history of Scouting while earning their Scouting Legacy activity badge and recruiting other boys in the process.
Eleanor’s extensive nationwide PR campaign will incorporate television, and radio, book signings, and speaking engagements. She also speaks at elementary schools, Boy Scout troops, civic organizations, and churches across the country.
Raised during the Great Depression, multi-award winning author Eleanor Clark’s books focus on the importance of history, patriotism, and love for God and country. Eleanor and her husband Lee have been married for over 57 years. The Clarks live in Texas. Find out more about Eleanor Clark’s efforts at www.YoungMenOfHonorSeries.com.

President Obama-Eagle Scout Certificates
There appears to be some confusion as to President Barack Obama's relationship with Scouting. To ensure that each of you has factual information if this issue comes up, please review the following statements that will assist you with questions.
- President Obama is the honorary president of the Boy Scouts of America. He accepted this honor soon after his inauguration last year and we appreciate his desire to serve in that position.
- President Obama's signature is on the Eagle Scout pocket card and Eagle Scout wall certificate. As with any change in the administration at the White House, there is lag time between when the new president takes office and the processing and licensing of his electronic signature for our documents.
- The President of the United States signature has never appeared on any of the lifesaving awards.
- Although he was unable to attend the 100th Anniversary Gala in Washington, D.C., in February, he did send a very nice letter to congratulate the BSA on its centennial. That letter can be viewed at http://ww2.scouting.org/100years/100years/sitefiles/1000/Celebrating100Years/Presidential_Letter.pdf
The Boy Scouts of America has always respected the office of President of the United States and will, as always, respect the holder of the office.
Jamboree Shakedown
Scouts from the California Inland Empire Council, Boy Scouts of America were preparing for the campout of a life-time. This past weekend boys and their leaders were check to make sure everything that they needed was ready, it was a shake down campout. Our council is sending 4 troops..
Imagine dawn on July 26, 2010: Dew on the empty fields shimmers in the growing daylight. And then … here they come! By noon, throngs of Scouts are carrying gear and tents, and gateways begin to emerge from the empty ground. By dusk, the landscape has been transformed into a bustling city of 18,000 tents, 3,600 patrol kitchens, and approximately 50,000 Scouts and leaders. This transformation occurs in mere hours, making Jamboree City the fastest growing city in Virginia, if not the world.
Amid the thousands of colorful tents that will house participants and provide program and support services, there is an infrastructure that provides a safe and secure environment at Fort A.P. Hill. Everything from bus systems, telephone and Internet, to first-aid stations and a hospital, police and fire departments, post offices, food warehouses, a radio station, a daily newspaper, trading posts, and concession stands provide all the support and program services needed for an outstanding event.
Over the course of the next 10 days, Scouts from across the country will experience the finest Scouting offers from rappelling, kayaking, canoeing, fly fishing, archery, swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, shooting, buckskin games, and hands-on merit badge demonstrations to enjoying the 17-acre conservation trail, four 5K runs, rotating stages of evening entertainment, and a 100th Anniversary rededication ceremony simulcast to fellow troops gathering throughout the world. The jamboree is an experience of a lifetime. It’s a unique opportunity to physically and tangibly introduce life skills to 50,000 Scouts and leaders and more than 250,000 visitors, and to celebrate the mission of the Boy Scouts of America. This is what our boys going to do….
