Good day and welcome to our April 19th Monday Memo
Jamoboree 2010
Attention all Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts: Our 2010 Jamboree contingent still has openings! We will be traveling to Philadelphia, Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Washington DC, and Mt. Vernon among other sites before arriving at the Jamboree site, Fort A.P.Hill, Caroline County, Virginia. Our fee is $2,800.
Imagine dawn on July 26, 2010: Dew on the empty fields shimmers in the growing daylight. And then … here they come! By noon, throngs of Scouts are carrying gear and tents, and gateways begin to emerge from the empty ground. By dusk, the landscape has been transformed into a bustling city of 18,000 tents, 3,600 patrol kitchens, and approximately 50,000 Scouts and leaders. This transformation occurs in mere hours, making Jamboree City the fastest growing city in Virginia, if not the world.
Amid the thousands of colorful tents that will house participants and provide program and support services, there is an infrastructure that provides a safe and secure environment at Fort A.P. Hill. Everything from bus systems, telephone and Internet, to first-aid stations and a hospital, police and fire departments, post offices, food warehouses, a radio station, a daily newspaper, trading posts, and concession stands provide all the support and program services needed for an outstanding event.
Over the course of the next 10 days, Scouts from across the country will experience the finest Scouting offers from rappelling, kayaking, canoeing, fly fishing, archery, swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, shooting, buckskin games, and hands-on merit badge demonstrations to enjoying the 17-acre conservation trail, four 5K runs, rotating stages of evening entertainment, and a 100th Anniversary rededication ceremony simulcast to fellow troops gathering throughout the world. The jamboree is an experience of a lifetime. It’s a unique opportunity to physically and tangibly introduce life skills to 50,000 Scouts and leaders and more than 250,000 visitors, and to celebrate the mission of the Boy Scouts of America. Policy on Scout Participation in Political Events
This is a good time to restate the BSA's long-standing policy regarding the participation of Scouts in political rallies and other political events.
Uniformed unit members and leaders may participate in flag ceremonies at political events and may lead the Pledge of Allegiance; however, they should retire after the ceremony and not remain on the speakers' platform or in a conspicuous location where television viewers could construe their presence as an endorsement or symbol of support. In addition, photos of candidates or Scouts in uniform or BSA marks and logos are not allowed in political campaign materials of any kind.
Volunteers and professionals must be alert to situations that would imply that the BSA favors one candidate over another. Strict observance of our long-standing policy against the active participation of uniformed Scouts and leaders in political events is mandatory.
Pack 393 Wolves 1st Place RUMBA We wanted to share that Pack 393 Wolf Den #3 won 1st place for their "We Pledge Allegiance" RUMBA entry at yesterdays City of Chino Hills Earthday event. The scouts had a wonderful time painting and creating the American Flag art. We took this picture on our cellphone to share...although a nicer photo will appear in the local paper along with the names of the scouts. Thanks for all the information you provided for this event. The scouts had a fun time!

Release of Final Requirements for Geocaching Merit Badge
We are excited to introduce the Geocaching Merit Badge. It is the second new merit badge within 6 months (after SCUBA) and the first of three to focus on applications associated with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The other two merit badges in this group include the Inventing Merit Badge (developed in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology) due out in mid-June and the Robotics Merit Badge due out in the first quarter of 2011).
The Geocaching Merit Badge will be represented at Merit Badge Midway at the 2010 National Scout Jamboree.

Family Scouting
I am a former scout and currently serve as a Unit Commissioner and Assistant Scoutmaster in Tahquitz District and Troop 384 in Temecula. My wife, Mary is a committee member and Eagle Coordinator for our troop. We have two sons; Alexander (12) who has just earned his Star Scout rank in Troop 384. Our second son, Samuel is a 2nd year Webelo with Pack 614 and is excited to join his brother’s troop as soon as he is able.
This weekend, our family was attending and staffing the District Camporee at Camp Emerson. We were running the First Aid competition, called the Ship’s Surgeon (there was a Pirate Theme this year. In addition to it being a great event and really well attended (there were around 380 scouts and approx. 150 adults/ parents and staff members) we had a particularly proud family event.
Well, in addition to our son, Alexander being tapped during the Order of the Arrow ceremony, we were especially happy with what happened next with 500 of our “closest friends” in attendance!
Mary’s father, Darrel Hubbard, is 71 years old and very, very active in his grandson’s troop. He is an Assistant Scoutmaster and tries to accompany both of his grandson’s on all of their camping trips! As if that weren’t enough, Darrel was tapped into OA as well.
His story is especially gratifying to us as a family. As a young man, he earned his Eagle Rank when he was 21 (21 was the age limit back then to participate) in 1960 in Minnesota. At that point, in addition to attending Moorhead State University, he was married and working full time, AND expecting their first of four children. It meant so much to him (the oldest of four brothers- he was the only one involved in scouting), that he made the supreme effort to earn his Eagle Rank. He has always been tremendously proud of his accomplishment, but did not make a big deal about it to others or his family. He was quietly proud as I like to put it. Quiet, at least, until our boys became involved in scouting! Then he came roaring back!
He became a leader (ASM) in the troop and as active as his schedule allowed (which by the way, is an hour drive back and forth from his home in San Diego). … At 71 years old, he makes a major effort to be with the boys and accompany them on most all of their campouts and be as active in the troop as he is able (he still has an active consulting practice!
Several years ago, he brought out all of his merit badges and rank cards to share with our sons and the troop (who were duly impressed) and we learned that he had long ago lost his Eagle Card and really wanted it re-issued, but just never got around to it. My wife then contacted BSA national and did the appropriate research and provided necessary documentation (unbeknownst to Darrel) to get his card re-issued.
During our troop’s Court of Honor early last year, Darrel was presented with his new Eagle Rank card along with several other honors and kudos, which was emotionally attended by many members of our proud family! We also had a big ceremony early last year during a Court of Honor presenting him with a re-issued Eagle card and all of the awards.
As a side note, during this centennial year of the Boy Scouts of America, he is celebrating his 50th anniversary of becoming an Eagle Scout… he really enjoys being the wise, old sage of the troop and sharing his wisdom with all of the boys… and the adults! J
Anyway, as emotional as our son being “tapped” for the Order of the Arrow this weekend, it was a total surprise to be able to see her father being “tapped” as well! He was one of only two adult leaders from our troop to receive this huge honor and it was especially special for her to see her father AND son receive the honor in front of the entire district together!
Our entire family is so proud of both Alexander and Darrel, grandson and grandfather, on his 50th and BSA’s 100th anniversary for us to be involved in such a wonderful organization making memories that our family will hold and cherish for many lifetimes to come. Thank you to all who are involved and make time for scouting! It really touches people’s lives and makes a difference! … just thought you’d appreciate hearing our story.
