Welcome to our April 8th, 2013 Monday Memo

First Annual Leave No Trace Awareness Day

CIEC Outdoor Ethics Committee, Girl Scout Troop 989, Cyndi Fehler and Rachel Griffin, the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association Bob Hazelton and Smokey Bear and the City of Yucaipa attended the First Annual Leave No Trace Awareness Day at Yucaipa Community Park. Girl Scout Troop 989 hosted this event as their Bronze Award project. They were able to secure the Leave No Trace traveling trainers for a very fun hands on learning day. A huge thank-you to the scouters who ran the Leave No Trace Trail for CIEC, Master Educators - Terese, John and Summer, Trainers - Sue, Sherrie, Kate, Hannah, Jake and Carolyn for sharing their love of Leave No Trace with approximately 165 participants. If you weren't there, you missed this fantastic learning experience with the Traveling Trainers Dani and Roland. We were even visited by Big Foot! We had a great day thanks again Paula!

2015 World Scout Jamboree (WSJ)

The International Events Division of the BSA has advised that it had expected registration for the 2015 World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) to be 'live' by September 1, 2012 but has had to delay the “live” date.  More information will be posted at www.scouting.org/worldjamboree and on the CIEC International Scouting Home page (http://www.bsaciec.org/activities/international-scouting-home-page/45349) in the near future.

The International Division is waiting for the exact birth date ranges and pricing from the Scout Association of Japan as well as potential tour pricing for the BSA contingent.  The BSA cannot “go live” with registration until it has this information.

As several CIEC Scouts and Scouters have already started expressing interest in being part of the BSA contingent to the 2015 WSJ in Japan, it will be important for any interested Scout or Scouter to submit letters/emails of their expressions of interest to the CIEC-ISC ASAP. Such submittals may be made to the CIEC ISC IR/CIEC ISC Chair Mike Goldware (magoldware@aol.com).  Such submittals should include the Scout's/Scouter's full name, mailing address info, all contact info including telephone and email address, and a Scouting bio/resume.

Alumni Day at the 2013 National Scout Jamboree

Scouts and Scouters across the country are buzzing with excitement about the upcoming 2013 National Scout Jamboree to be held July 15–24. This event will mark the grand opening of our newest high-adventure base—the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. We hope you plan to attend; you wouldn’t want to miss all the fun and adventure the Scouting Alumni Association (SAA) and the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) have in store.

Among the many activities for visitors to take part in is the NESA exhibit. This longstanding highlight of the national jamboree will deliver once again with outstanding speakers, displays, and attractions. Making its debut at the NESA exhibit this year is the much-anticipated “NESA Pole.” This 20-foot marvel depicting a soaring eagle will be hand-carved out of carefully selected catalpa wood and will become a permanent fixture at the Summit.

To conclude the alumni and NESA activities, BSA alumni are invited to attend the official Alumni Day on Saturday, July 20. The highlight of this day will be an enjoyable entertainment production for 60,000 visitors, as well as an amazing fireworks display as the grand finale to an exciting day for Scouting.

You can sign up for the July 20 Alumni Day at the 2013 jamboree through the Scouting Alumni Association website at www.BSAalumni.org.

Back On Track: Follow The No. 19 BSA IndyCar Throughout The Season

Wilson's best 2012 finish was a win at the Firestone 550 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Wilson’s best 2012 finish was a win at the Firestone 550 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Looking for one more reason to watch IndyCar this year?

Try this: Justin Wilson, already a three-time winner on the IndyCar Series in his five-year career, drives the No. 19 Dale Coyne Racing car this season. And today, we learned that the car will carry the color and markings of the Boy Scouts of America for the remainder of 2013.

Why is this big? To start, it’s the first time that a driver of the BSA car is a past winner. Translation: You’re likely to see that flying fleur-de-lis competing for the checkered flag quite a bit this year.

It all starts with Sunday’s Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, airing at 3 p.m. Eastern on the NBC Sports Network. Then, tune in and follow the car over the course of the entire season, including the Indy 500 on May 26.

Wilson is the third British-born driver of the BSA IndyCar, after Alex Lloyd and James Jakes. But just because he wasn’t born here doesn’t mean he isn’t proud to represent our organization in races.

“This is a real honor for me to be representing the Boy Scouts of America,” he said in a release. “I was never a Boy Scout, but the Scouts did have their start back in England where I am originally from.  I’m looking forward to working with the local Scouts at the races and hopefully bringing them a win this year.” The feeling’s mutual, Justin. We’ll be watching!

Accelerating the Adventure

We are proud to announce our fourth season of BSA Racing. This program continues to be an exciting way to engage national partners, local councils, youth, and volunteers. By providing fun learning opportunities that would not be found in a classroom, auto racing has proved to be a great way to take our BSA STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education programs to new levels. The open-wheel racing branch of the BSA Racing platform is driving along with great momentum thanks to our sponsors IndyCar and Dale Coyne Racing.

Boy Scouts of America is also tremendously excited to announce our first full season with Scott Lagasse Racing (SLR), sponsored by Hybrid Light, in the NASCAR Nationwide
Series. With All-Star driver Scott Lagasse Jr. behind the wheel of his high-powered Chevy, our Scouting family is surely in for a high-octane racing season!

Check out the schedule and mark your calendar for a race near you. If you have any questions about BSA Racing, please email us at www.bsa.racing@scouting.org. We would love to hear from you.

Exploring the Financial Possibilities

The Boy Scouts of America card program is gearing up for a great year. Two BSA-specific products—the BSA Discover prepaid card brought to you by mFunds and the BSA
Discover credit card brought to you by UMB—are now available. Both cards have been received with strong enthusiasm since their launch in the fourth quarter of 2012. Our card program is anchored in the idea that creating an environment of financial literacy is not just the responsibility of parents, but the financial industry experts can and do play a strong role as well. In order to become strong leaders, our youth need to understand the short- and long-term value of being financially informed.

Through the prepaid card program, Scouting families have access to insightful resources that help educate youth about all areas of personal financial responsibility. We encourage you to visit www.scoutsarethrifty. com to find out more about this outstanding program. Also on this site you can find details about our new 2013 Boy Scout Jamboree prepaid card, which is the perfect tool for young Scouts as they prepare for the first-ever jamboree at our new location— the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia.

Our credit card program gives Scouting adults a powerful financial tool that supports Scouting with every purchase. This is an innovative way to support the movement that we all cherish. To learn more about this effort and to help spread the word, please visit www.scouting.org/creditcard. To order your card, please visit www.boyscoutcreditcard.com.

Positive Quote & Prayer
-------------------------------------

"I went to a little schoolhouse down on the corner where I was involved in a Boy Scout troop. It was my Scoutmaster who really kicked off my musical career. He taught me how to play the guitar. I feel that was my key to the music industry."

    Eddie Rabbit, Country Musician

"But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
