Local Youth Show Spirit at International Event

7 Scouts and 3 adults from Boy Scout Troop 229, which is chartered by the Kiwanis Club of Twentynine Palms, attended an International Camporee with 1200 other Scouts from troops throughout Southern California and groups from Mexico last weekend at Mataguay Scout Reservation near Warner Springs, California.  One group from the Scouts of Mexico and one troop from the Boy Scouts of America was selected from the 75 troops and groups at the International Camproee to receive awards for best representing the Spirit of Scouting in their nation.  The Scouts of Troop 229, lead by Senior Patrol Leader Vincent Thomas, received that award for the Boy Scouts of America and a Group from Mexico City received the award for Scouts Mexico.  Their Scoutmaster, Brad White-Findeisen spoke about the World Organization of the Scout Movement's theme, "Messengers of Peace", to all the assembled Scouts and Guides as the coordinator of the "Scouts Own" interfaith service on Sunday morning.  Activities at the camporee included canoeing without paddles, lake crossing by rope, archery, rifle shooting, tomahawk throwing, pioneering, several Scout skills and team building/initiative games, and a Saturday night fiesta hosted by Scouts Mexico with carnival games and dancing to electronica, rap and hip hop music.

Chief Scout Executive Selection

I’m pleased to announce that following an extensive selection process, the Boy Scouts of America has named Wayne Brock its next Chief Scout Executive.

Wayne has served as deputy Chief Scout Executive since October 1, 2009, giving leadership and direction to all aspects of operations of the national council.

Wayne began his career in 1972 as a District Executive in New Bern, NC and then served on the staff in Knoxville, Tennessee; Scout Executive in Athens, GA; Area Director; Scout Executive in Orlando, Florida; Regional Director of the Southern Region; and as assistant Chief Scout Executive.

Wayne is a recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, Order of the Arrow Distinguished Service Award and received his bachelor of music education degree from East Carolina University.  Wayne and his wife, Ernestine, have a married son and one granddaughter.

Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca concludes an exceptional career with his retirement on August 31st. Wayne will assume the office on September 1, 2012.  The selection committee will recommend to the board for approval an exception to the mandatory 65 year old retirement age which will allow Wayne to serve in this position until the age of 67.

I want to take a moment to thank the Chief Scout Executive candidates and the selection committee members for their participation in this process.  We are excited about the leadership Wayne will continue to bring to this position and the movement.

Rex Tillerson, National President

Adopt-a-School Program Connects Units, Schools

The BSA’s Adopt-a-School program is an exciting new undertaking that will connect Scout packs, troops, and crews across the country with schools in their communities.

Participating Scouts then work—within clearly defined guidelines—to team up with school administrations and offer the volunteer services that most efficiently meet their school’s needs. With each unit offering their school a minimum one-year commitment, meaningful community relationships are built and significant changes will happen in the schools.

Exciting milestones have been set to strengthen the presence and progress of the Adopt-a-School program. By the fall of 2012, we plan to meet our goal of 15,000 adopted schools, and 25,000 by July 2013!

The hope at the heart of Adopt-a-School is to build strong, sustaining relationships with these schools, creating thousands of lasting community relationships across the U.S. Through committed volunteer efforts—from landscaping and cleanup outside the school building to Scouts’ active participation in school events throughout the year—the BSA will become a defined presence in improving our nation’s schools.

Be a Brownsea Scout at Camp Emerson this Summer!

Every Scout should have the opportunity to go to summer camp. The California Inland Empire Council offers a great program for new Boy Scouts, recently graduated Webelos Scouts and for those who want another week of fun. Scouts attend camp individually or with one or more friends and are hosted by a troop for the week. They will then experience all the great fun of Camp Emerson.

Plus, what's better than a week at Scout camp? A second week! Scouts attending a second week of Camp Emerson earn the special Tahquitz Scout patch and only pay $150!

Brownsea/Tahquitz Scouts will also receive a coupon for a special gift from the Camp Emerson Trading Post!

Encourage your Scouts to sign-up today!

Please contact Gail in Volunteer Services at (909) 793-2463 ext 129 for any questions.

Mt. Rubidoux District Trains Youth Leaders

Games, patrol spirit and leadership sessions were just some of the activities enjoyed by Scouts from several districts at Cedar Badge – Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops, which was conducted at Riverside Community Church on May 18-19. The overnighter course, developed by the Mt. Rubidoux Training team, also covered the Patrol Leader Handbook.

Inspired by the movie, “Troop Avengers” was made up of the Ironman, Captain America and Thor patrols. The course was attended by Scouts from Five Nations, High Desert and  Mt. Rubidoux. A committee member from a High Desert troop also attended; he wanted to learn more about youth leadership training and the boy-led troop.

Scouts learned about the patrol method and the boy-led troop. Scouts learned how to conduct a Scout’s Own, lead songs, plan a campfire, run a Patrol Leaders Council, conduct games, conduct patrol meetings and  receive instruction in the three modules from Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops. But the three modules were delivered the Cedar Badge way:  lots of fun and  full of Scouting spirit. The highlight for the troop was “Radio Towers,” Cedar Badge’s hands-on approach to presenting Module Three. The fast-paced game -- a mix of capture the flag, flag football, and pioneering --  tested the Scouts’ leadership skills.

After the campfire, Scouts received a certificate, Cedar Badge patch and Trained patch.

Cedar Badge was staffed by Scouts and adults from troops 2, 8, 90 and 176.

“A good time was had by all,” said Jon Kantola, scoutmaster of  Cedar Badge and MR district training chair.

Scout Shabbat

Scouts from all over the Coachella Valley participated in the Scout Shabbat Hosted by Temple Sinai and Michael Sanford, BSA T131/GSSGC T123.   Scouts participated in readings and prayers as is customary for Shabbat as well as a special section specifically for scouting.  10 different Boy Scout/ Cub Scout units were present and 3 different Girl Scout Units were present.  It was a great success for all. Special Thank You to Rabbi Jordan Ofseyer and Cantorial Soloist Randy Tichauer for their time and effort in putting the event together.

Retire United States Flags with Dignity & Respect

Here is a great idea for Boy Scout troops to involve your local community and provide a much needed service. On Memorial Day or Flag Day, conduct a ceremony where worn US Flags are retired with dignity and respect. First, find a location where a fire can be safely held. Be sure to get any required burn permits from your local municipality. Then invite your local police and fire department to participate. You can also invite the local American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars to participate. They can be a great resource on the proper way to retire a worn flag.

If your unit is in need of some flags to retire, please email Program Director Kevin Gustafson. You can also email your unit's story and pictures for submission to the Monday Memo!

Wanted: 36 Volunteers to Share Their Merit Badge Skills at the 2013 National Scout Jamboree

Merit Badges don't teach themselves.

And with the 2013 National Scout Jamboree just 14 months away, the BSA’s looking for a few good men and women to demonstrate their skills.

The focus is on the six newest merit badges making a big splash at the Summit Bechtel Reserve next summer. They’re Inventing, Robotics, Chess, Welding, Search & Rescue, and Game Design.

Janice Downey and the Innovation team are looking for six volunteers to help with each of those merit badges. Thirty-six people in all.

If you have professional or recreational expertise in any of those fields, send Janice an e-mail and let her know. Contact merit.badge@scouting.org, and be sure to include your Scouting experience and area of expertise.

She’s looking for people already committed to attend the jamboree either full or half-time.

If you’re not yet registered, that’s OK. You can apply now. If you’re already registered and haven’t committed to a specific position, let Janice know and she’ll take a look at your staff application.

Are you in? You’ll help share your passion for Inventing, Robotics, Chess, Welding, Search & Rescue, and Game Design while experiencing the first jamboree held at the BSA’s new high-adventure home. What’s the downside of that?
