Boy Scout Summer Camp Opportunities!
Every Boy Scout needs to experience summer camp. We hope that your Scouts will have the opportunity for a week of fun and adventure with their friends hiking trails and earning merit badges. The California Inland Empire Council has a three great programs for Boy Scouts this summer.
Target on Transition - Held at Camp Helendade from June 20 - 25th, this program is designed for the new Boy Scout. The Scouts will become part of a patrol and work on many of the requirements needed for his Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class ranks. In addition, he'll have the opportunity to shoot rifles, canoe and swim. The program is only $225!
Brownsea Scout - This is a great program for those Scouts who couldn't attend camp with their troop or want another week of fun. Scouts can choose to attend any Camp Emerson summer camp session and will either be placed with a host troop, or organized into a provisional troop with other Brownsea Scouts.
Tahquitz Scout - This program is the same as the Brownsea Scout, but by attending a second week at Camp Emerson, he gets to go for the low price of $150 and will earn a special Camp Emerson patch!
Please let your Scouts know of these great opportunities for summer fun. In addition, we have extended the deadline for campership applications through June 15!

Old Baldy District Pack 641 On May 6-8, 2011, Cub Scout Pack 641 from the Old Baldy District went camping at Yucaipa Regional Park. A total of nine families participated in the campout. The boys participated in several activities while camping, earning the fishing, hiking, baseball and flag football belt loops. For the first time in several years, some of the cubbies were even able to catch fish! The boys did a wonderful job of performing skits for the families at the camp fire and they learned how to make an omelet in a bag. | |
International Scout
This summer, the council will host an International Scout on our camp staff. This will be an extraordinary opportunity for CIEC Cubs, Scouts and Scouters. Among other things, it will give those involved an opportunity to meet some of the requirements for the CIEC approved International Activity Badge (IAB). The requirements will be posted on the CIEC website soon (under Activities, International, Awards).
Cecilia Arias, a 19 year-old environmental engineering student from La Paz, Bolivia is scheduled to serve on the Camp Wiley staff. She is fluent in both Spanish and English. She is a veteran of 9 years of Bolivian Scouting . Her interests include origami, folkloric ballet, the flute, and she has served as a math tutor.
The International Scouting Committee (ISC) is looking for four different families to serve as a host (for 3+ days; i.e., 7/4-7/7; 7/10-7/14); 7/17-7/21; and 7/24-7/28 or one period per family) for Cecilia. Hosting an international scouter meets a requirement for the IAB for Scouters. If you are interested, please contact CIEC ISC Professional Advisor Marcell Vargas (mvargas@bsamail.org) or CIEC ISC Chair Mike Goldware (magoldware@aol.com)
Jamboree-On-The-Air Planned for October
 | The Jamboree-on-the-Air, or JOTA, is an annual Scouting event that uses amateur radio to link Scouts around the world, around the nation, and in your own community. For the 2011 event, which will be held October 15–16, we have just finished assembling the promotional and operational information. While complete details are available online at the JOTA site, you also may download fact sheets for Scout leaders and for radio amateurs. Now is the time to include JOTA in your fall program planning to ensure your Scouts are able to participate. The World Scout Bureau reported that the 2010 JOTA had more than 700,000 Scout participants from nearly 6,000 amateur radio stations. |
Summertime Pack Award
A good reason for your pack to meet in the summertime.
Long Days, Warm Nights, and school vacations make summertime a great time for Cub Scouting. Packs that meet over the summer hold onto their members and leaders longer, and activities like day camp let new Cub Scouts start their Scouting adventures on a high note. And if that weren't enough, packs can earn the National Summertime Pack Award for doing nothing more than having fun in the summer. There are three levels of the award: pack, den, and individual.
What are the requirements for the pack award?
All you have to do is hold three pack activities over the summer: one in June, one in July, and one in August. After you've done that, you're eligible to receive the National Summertime Pack Award streamer (No. 17808) for your pack flag and the National Summertime Pack Award certificate (No. 33731A) for your meeting place.
What kinds of activities count?
The sky's the limit. You could attend day camp as a pack, hold a family cookout, conduct a service project, or spend an afternoon working on belt loops and pins from the Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program. This is a great opportunity to involve parents in the planning. Ask them to plan an activity or an event. Just remember to keep the emphasis on fun.
How do the den and individual awards work?
A den that has at least half its members at the three summer pack events can receive a ribbon (No. 17806) for its den flag. For the individual award, a boy must attend all three events. Once he's done that, he'll receive a National Summertime Award pin to wear on his uniform. The pins match the boy's neckerchief slide, and there's a different pin for each Cub Scout rank: Tiger (No. 14332), Wolf (No. 14333), Bear (No. 14334), and Webelos (No. 14335).
Where is the National Summertime Award pin worn? The pin goes on the right pocket flap of the Cub Scout uniform.
How do we apply for the National Summertime Pack Award?
Complete the National Summertime Pack Award application and submit it to your local council service center. (You can download the form at www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/33748.pdf.) The form asks for the exact number of dens, boys, and family members who participated in each event, so be sure to keep good attendance records.
Our pack meets at a year-round school, so we already have year-round den and pack meetings. How can we qualify for the award?
You could hold special pack activities during long school breaks, even if they don't occur in June, July, and August.
I've heard about Scouting's new Journey to Excellence program. Does it replace this award?
No. That program replaces the Centennial Quality Awards Program. Note, however, that summer activities do contribute to several Journey to Excellence measures.
Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year
The California Inland Empire Council's
Glenn A. & Melinda W. Adams National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award
On Veteran's Day 2010, at the Phelan Veterans of Foreign Wars Lodge, Aidan Judd of Wrightwood Troop 351, unveiled his Eagle Project: a state-of-the-art Hewlett Packard TouchSmart computer and custom-built kiosk. The computer kiosk holds the war time memories of local veterans whose service ranged from World War II to Desert Storm. Each veteran was interviewed by Scouts from Troop 351, and each story is now preserved in a patriotic display housed at the VFW, where is will be accessible to post members and to the community. The project was completed with the support of the VFW, along with 330 service hours from Troop 351 Scouts, parents, and leaders. Currently in 8th grade, Aidan plans to go back with his fellow Scouts each Memorial Day and Veteran's Day to conduct additional interviews until he leaves for college.
Aidan was presented the award at the council's Eagle Scout Dinner in March. His project was also considered for additional awards at the regional and national level.
For more information about the award and for a list of 2011 winners from across the nation, please visit http://nesa.org/adams_award.html. Applications for the 2012 award must be received by the council on or before January 21, 2012.

Positive Quote
----------------------
We express courtesy and kindness in so many ways. And our simplest words can encourage people, if we make the effort.
Here, as quoted in the book Lincoln on Leadership, is what Abraham Lincoln said about a his own efforts,: “I have the popular reputation of being a story teller, but I do not deserve the name ... for it is not the story itself, but its purpose, or effect, that interests me. I often avoid … a laborious explanation by a short story that illustrates my point of view. So, too, the sharpness of a refusal or the edge of a rebuke may be blunted by an appropriate story, so as to save wounded feelings and yet serve the purpose. No, I am not a simple story-teller, but story-telling as an emollient saves much friction and distress.”
Choose your words with tender, loving compassion.
Have a great Scouting week!
Yours in the Spirit of Scouting,
