Monday Memo

Good day and welcome to our May 24th, 2010 Monday Memo
Camp Helendade Cleanup
Saturday, May 15th, Troop 40 from Grand Terrace/Arrowhead District and Camp Wiley staffers descended on Camp Helendade. Along with general clean-up, the primary task for the day was removing the rubble of the old health lodge, which suffered critical damage during the winter of 2008. Here are some pictures of the Scouts and their leaders in action. Thank you for a job well done!
CIEC/BSA World Jamboree Committee update
Dear Scouters:
Here is an synopsis of the 5/19/10 meeting and suggestions as we move forward:
- We have 9 Scouts and 4 Scouters approved at the council level for consideration as members of the national contingent to the 2011 World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) in Sweden or (for the adults) as IST's (international staff positions). So far as we know all of the Scouts and three of the Scouters have received Region approval and have 'complete applications' for purposes of consideration. Our goal is to have at least one Scout form each district. At present there are no applications from Arrowhead, Five Nations, Mt. Rubidoux, Tahquitz, or Three Peaks. It is important that the members of the committee from these districts make every effort to recruit at least one Scout from his/her district for the 2011 WSJ. All members of the committee are urged to make contact with Scouters they know in the above five districts to assist in the recruitment effort.
- Although there was a discrepancy with what the CIEC shows and what Region was showing (as to competed applications for consideration), our staff advisor (Marcel Vargas) will reconcile this with our Region representative (Howard Dutra).
- Any Scouter who is not selected for the national contingent, will have his/her application reviewed for possible consideration as an IST unless that Scouter makes it known (s)he does not wish to be considered as an IST.
- Once the official flyers, which are being secured through Howard Dutra's efforts are received, we will arrange for a bulk mailing to go to anywhere from 300-700 leaders whose units, because of the level of activity and advancement are likely to have a Scout who might go to the 2011 WSJ.
- Your reports on contacts with Roundtables and individual units are important and they should be met with as much frequency as possible between now and October 2010. Additionally, do not forget other opportunities such as summer camp, council camporee, OA functions (both lodge and chapter). Once you have made contact with a unit and have made a presentation, suggest a presentation to the unit's sponsoring institution. The institution may be in a position to help defray some of the Scouts cost.
- The later the application, the more money the applicant must provide with his application. For example, the current deposit is $1700. This figure will only grow as we approach the formation of the national contingent.
- The next meeting of the committee will be: 8/18/10, CIEC Service Center, 1230 Indiana Court, Redlands, California 92374-28969
Yours in Scouting

New insignia recognizes a unit's founding members
Beginning in 1910, the founders of the Boy Scouts of America set out to create a program to enrich the lives of young people. It was no easy task, but their efforts paid off—big time.
Each year since, thousands of Scouts and Scouters have followed in the founders' footsteps by creating new Scouting units. The BSA wants to recognize the efforts of a unit's founding members with a special piece of insignia—just in time for the program's 100th Anniversary.
The Founder's Bar, shown above, is worn by all youth and adults whose names are on a new-unit charter or who officially join the new unit before the unit recharters for the first time. Members of veteran units still in operation who were on the original charter may also wear the Founder’s Bar with that unit’s numerals.
You can wear the bar after your original charter has been accepted and processed by your council. All youth and adults who were on the new-unit charter can sew the Founder’s Bar of the left sleeve below the unit numerals.
Do you qualify? Contact your local Scout shop for information on how to purchase the materials shown above.
Wear the patch with pride and the knowledge that your work in forming and sustaining a Scouting unit has added to the program's impressive history. Read More.....
Day Trips around the Inland Empire
My friend and real estate agent, Shirley Harry reminded me about the great scenery to be found in our two county area known as the Inland Empire. The Press-Enterprise had an article in their May 12 newspaper that was entitled "Winter recharges natural wonders." The article cited the many waterfalls that can be found in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Because we had "decent rain and snowfall" this winter, these falls are worth a trip to view the cascading water. The two tallest waterfalls in Southern California are located in San Bernardino County. The Big Falls in Forest Falls at more than 600 feet and Bonita Falls at almost 400 feet located in the Lytle Creek area.
Other falls that are presently flowing with water include:
- Heart Rock Falls -22 feet of falling water with a heart shaped rock crevice located in the Valley of Enchantment near Crestline
- Tahquitz Falls, a 60 foot falls located on a Native American sacred site in the Palm Springs area
- The Seven Sisters which is only a 10 foot falls adjacent to a number of stone pools and it is also located near Palm Springs.
- If you do decide to visit these wonderful natural sites, remember to be careful as the rocks can be slippery and it is probably best to view them from a bit of a distance.
Insurance Coverage
Scouting Safely (http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety.aspx) on www.scouting.org has a Scouting Safely Alerts section with an informative piece on Insurance Coverages in the Insurance Programs Alert, which is available to volunteers and chartered organizations.
Please read the updated the Insurance Coverage Alert with information indicating that there is no insurance policy in place that would provide indemnification or defense coverage for those situations involving allegations of intentional and/or criminal acts.
Please be advised that a volunteer (registered or not), unit, chartered organization, or local council could jeopardize their insurance coverage under the general liability policy if they are engaging in unauthorized activities as outlined in the Guide to Safe Scouting. Unauthorized activities are not considered Official Scouting Activities.

Positive Quote in honor of Memorial Day, May 31st ------------------------ WE REMEMBER THEM (A Jewish Prayer) At the rising of the sun and at its going down We remember them. At the blowing of the wind and the chill of winter We remember them. At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring We remember them. At the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of summer We remember them. At the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of autumn We remember them. At the beginning of the year and when it ends We remember them. As long as we live, they too will live; for they are now a part of us, as we remember them. When we are weary and in need of strength We remember them. When we are lost and sick at heart We remember them. When we have joy we crave to share We remember them. When we have decisions that are difficult to make We remember them. When we have achievements that are based on theirs We remember them. As long as we live, they too will live; for they are now a part of us, as we remember them. | In observance of Memorial Day the next Monday Memo will be June 7, 2010
