Welcome to our June 11th, 2012 Monday Memo

Tahquitz District’s Pinewood Derby

On May 26, 2012, the Tahquitz District hosted its Pinewood Derby at the Lake Elsinore Storm Stadium.  In addition to all of the scouts and parents who turned out for the derby, Thunder, the Lake Elsinore Storm mascot and the Applebee’s Bee from the Applebee’s Restaurant in Temecula were also in attendance.  All of the scouts and parents in attendance had an opportunity to have their picture taken with the Applebee’s Bee.

After all of the racing, trophies were awarded to the fastest Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos Scouts with the top three fastest scouts receiving the District trophies for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.  The winners in the scout division were:
· 1st place – Ethan P., 2nd place – Cooper G., 3rd place – Carson B.
· Webelos – Braeden P., Bear – Michael N., Wolf – Stephen W., Tiger – Hunter B.

Trophies were also awarded to the fastest youth (non-scout), adult, and Friends of Scouting racers.  The winners in these divisions were:
· Fastest youth (non-scout) – Richard G., Adult – Tom Villanueva, Friends of Scouting – Angie Townsend of Applebee’s Restaurant in Temecula

The District’s Pinewood Derby allowed Cub Scouts throughout the district the opportunity to come together and talk with scouts from different Packs and share their design ideas and racing tips with one another.  After a hard day of racing, the winners earned the bragging rights of who had the fastest cars in the Tahquitz District.  The adults in attendance had the opportunity to see different options in running a Pinewood Derby, which they can take back to their Packs for next year’s racing season.

Special thanks to Tom Villanueva, from Pack 148, for providing the track and most of the equipment for the race and to Joseph Gray, from Pack 339, for providing the computer equipment, software knowledge, and announcing the event.

When a race volunteer had a scheduling conflict and was not able to attend the District’s Pinewood Derby, Eagle Scout Bradley “Brad” Chamberlain (Troop 309) volunteered to assist with the derby and start each race.  During the event, Angie Townsend, the manager of the Applebee’s in Temecula noticed Brad’s attention to detail and in between races had the chance to speak with Brad regarding the importance of scouting in his daily life.  After speaking with Brad, Angie suggested that Brad should apply with Applebee’s.  Four interviews later, Brad was hired as a host at the Applebee’s in Temecula.

Yours in Scouting, Carl Sprengelmeyer II, Tahquitz District Pinewood Derby Chair

Your Email Address is Important!

The easiest and quickest way to communicate with you and your Scouting families is by email. Plus, many of the great tools available to Scouting leaders such as the new Online Tour & Activity Plan, Internet Advancement and MyScouting require an email address. Also, by providing the council with an email address, you and your Scouting families can provide valuable feedback as part of the Voice of the Scout surveys which are emailed out each Spring and Fall.

Share the following link with your Scouting leaders and families and ask them to provide us with their email address so we can update their BSA membeship record. They can also sign-up for the Monday Memo!

Great Outdoors at Bass Pro Shop

The Old Baldy Disrict helped support the efforts of Bass Pro Shop.  District leadership and youth from Troop 301 and Troop 634 collabrated with Bass Pro in promoting the great outdoors to youth in our community. Nearly 500 youth caught their FiRST fish on Sat June 9th and 10th. The boys from Troop 301 helped these youth by illustrating leadership skills in the fishing industry. Fliers promoting BeAScout.org were distributed to every youth who fished in an attempt to recruit new Scouts.

One boy the age of 9 years old with, complete Joy in his eyes as he caught his first fish, said " if this is what Scouts do, then my mommy will have to sign me up!"

Help Tell the Story of Scouting … Visually

We need your help to make the story of Scouting go viral. Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca outlines a new initiative to engage Scouts and volunteers in sharing the excitement and adventure of Scouting with their peers through visual storytelling on the Web. Watch the video to learn more.

Lowe's National Eagle Scout Project Impact Grant

Home improvement retailer Lowe's has teamed with the Boy Scouts of America to provide the Lowe's National Eagle Scout Project Impact grant for candidates working on their Eagle Scout project.

About the Grant
A generous contribution from the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation has made it possible for the council to present selected Eagle Scout candidates with a $100 prepaid gift card to be used toward their service projects. Life Scouts who are planning a construction-based project may apply. The council Eagle project review board will determine which projects qualify for a Lowe's grant. A total of 68 grants will be awarded. After the project review is completed, the council will distribute the $100 prepaid gift cards to recipients. Cards must be used to purchase building materials and equipment for the Eagle candidate's service project. The gift card may be used at any Lowe's location or any place that it is accepted.

Qualifications
To qualify for a Lowe's National Eagle Scout Project Impact grant, the individual must

  • Be a registered Life Scout.
  • Complete and submit the Lowe's grant application
  • Be sure the Eagle Scout service project has all approvals before the work begins. Submit copies of pages 6 through 10 of the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook, No. 512-927 with the grant application.
  • Use the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook to document the results of the service project. Make photographs and all documentation available to the BSA for sharing with Lowe's.

Things You Should Know

  • If you plan to spend your gift card at a Lowe's location, you should consider speaking with the local store manager when you arrive. This will help Lowe's track how well the program is being received.
  • Document your project with "before" and "after" photographs. Be sure photographs show how the materials and equipment purchased with the gift card were used for your service project.

Our Thanks to Lowe's
The Boy Scouts of America thanks the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation for its generous support of Scouting across the country. Through this unique program, thousands of Life Scouts who are hard at work on their Eagle Scout service project will benefit from the contribution. Communities and organizations will benefit, too.

For additional information, email Program Director Kevin Gustafson. Grant applications are to be sent to:

New Program Aims to Keep Youth Safe Online

Today’s youth are spending more time than ever using digital media for education, research, socializing, and fun. To help families and volunteers keep youth safe while online, the Boy Scouts of America introduces the Cyber Chip.

In developing this exciting new tool—which can be earned by youth after completing all of the age-appropriate requirements—the BSA teamed up with content expert NetSmartz®, part of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and training expert for many law enforcement agencies.

NetSmartz has created a Scouting portal showcasing Cyber Chip resources, including grade-specific videos, for each level. Topics on the site include cyberbullying, cell phone use, texting, blogging, gaming, and identity theft.

All Cyber Chips will expire annually. Each Scout will need to “recharge” the chip by going back to the Netsmartz Recharge area. This space will hold new information, news, and a place for the Scout to recommit to net safety and netiquette. Then, with the unit leader, the Scout can add the new date to the Cyber Chip card or certificate.

For more information, read about the Cyber Chip in Scouting magazine’s Bryan on Scouting blog.

Search and Rescue Merit Badge to Be Announced

The Search and Rescue merit badge will be announced this week at the 2012 National Search and Rescue Conference. The conference is hosted by the National Association of Search and Rescue (NASAR) and the Mountain Rescue Association (MRA) in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

Because society in general is very attuned to urban searches, such as Amber Alerts (children) and Silver Alerts (seniors), we are providing a one-page list (in addition to the press release) called Staying Found—which helps members of the community understand what they can do if a person goes missing. All information will be available to councils on scouting.org/media by 7 a.m. EST Wednesday.

The merit badge pamphlet is still in development and is expected to be available later this summer.
