California Inland Empire Council Monday Memo |
|
Welcome to our June 13th, 2011 Monday Memo |
When in doubt, call for Scouts On Saturday June 4th, members from both Troop and Crew 129 from the Mt. Rubidoux District presented the colors at American Cancer Society's Relay for Life Riverside. The youth came through in a pinch when the local ROTC backed out last minute. The group had less than 48 hours to prepare, but did an awsome job. They had to stand at attention and hold the flag through the entire 30 minute opening ceremony. Great job guys and gals.

New Target on Transition Session Added to Camp Emerson!
Every Boy Scout needs to experience summer camp. We hope that your Scouts will have the opportunity for a week of fun and adventure with their friends hiking trails and earning merit badges. The California Inland Empire Council has three great programs for individual Boy Scouts or patrols this summer.
Target on Transition - NEW SESSION ADDED! Held at Camp Helendade from June 20-25th and at Camp Emerson July 5-9th, this program is designed for the new Boy Scout. The Scouts will become part of a patrol and work on many of the requirements needed for his Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class ranks. In addition, he'll have the opportunity to shoot rifles, canoe and swim. The program is only $225!
Brownsea Scout - This is a great program for those Scouts who couldn't attend camp with their troop or want another week of fun. Scouts can choose to attend any Camp Emerson summer camp session and will either be placed with a host troop, or organized into a provisional troop with other Brownsea Scouts.
Tahquitz Scout - This program is the same as the Brownsea Scout, but by attending a second week at Camp Emerson, he gets to go for the low price of $150 and will earn a special Camp Emerson patch!
Please let your Scouts know of these great opportunities for summer fun. In addition, we have extended the deadline for campership applications through June 15!
Camp Emerson is one of the best camp values in Southern California with new enhanced and exciting programs like mountain biking and geocaching. Plus great food and lots of it!

Guide to Safe Scouting Features New Policy on Lightning Safety Measures Statistics from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show that lightning killed 29 people and caused at least 300 injuries to others in the United States during 2010. At least 24 of the 29 deaths were to people involved in outdoor activities. In many cases, lightning has caused serious and lifelong injuries, including memory loss, muscular pain, numbness, and depression. To help raise awareness of the dangers of lightning, June 19–25 has been designated National Lightning Safety Awareness Week. Visit the above site on scouting.org for tips on lightning avoidance, as well as links to the newly updated Guide to Safe Scouting section on lightning risk reduction. Despite more than 100 years of folklore, the latest guidance advises that there is “no safe place outside” in a lightning storm.
BSA to Offer NetSmartz Internet Safety Program
The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is making available its Internet safety program, NetSmartz, to the BSA to teach Scouts and their families how to make responsible decisions both online and in real life. The BSA is asking all Scout leaders to incorporate the NetSmartz materials into their programs and to distribute information directly to parents.
The program uses videos, games, and activity cards to educate children on how to recognize potential Internet risks and to empower children to help prevent them from being exploited.
Scouts Can Participate in STEM-Related Space Shuttle Art Contest
The “Because It Flew” (BIF) project is a free, innovative educational program that commemorates and introduces students in the fourth through 12th grades (ages 9–17) to the 30-year history of the space shuttle program and its scientific and technological contributions to society.
The BIF program, which integrates STEM and language arts in a way that engages students and their creativity, consists of two elements: (1) optional educational activities and (2) NASA Space Shuttle Art Competition.
Educational Activities
Four interesting, unique activities engage and introduce students to the history of NASA space shuttle missions. They may also guide students through the process of creating an entry for the NASA Space Shuttle Art Competition. You can download the activities directly from the BIF website.
NASA Space Shuttle Art Competition
Students are invited to create original artwork that symbolizes the impact of the NASA space shuttle program on our planet and people. They will also write a 250-word essay explaining their artistic entries. An expert panel of artists will review submissions. The submission deadline is August 5.
Fix N Fun at Camp Helendade
This past weekend, a lot of great Scouts and Scouters came up to Camp Helendade in Running Springs to get camp ready for the summer. Old Baldy Pack 658 came out and helped remove accumulated pine needles and other debris around several of the buildings. The Serano Chapter of the Order of the Arrow provided a lot of expertise and brawn with helping move construction supplies, install the well housing, help clean the kitchen and dining hall and other tasks. Mt Rubidoux's Wanamaker family came out and replaced the siding on the dining hall, fixed plumbing fixtures and pipes, drywall repair and other tasks. Troop 2011 helped clean the bathrooms and paint. Lynne Cochran and her Lone Scout son helped clean restrooms and cook lunch. Other groups that came out include the Huerta's from Troop 141, Judy Graeber, Rick Pohlers and of course Dakota from Running Springs. Thank you all for your hard work and service to camp!
Pack 421 & Charter Org Service Event
Hello Joe,
I wanted to share what a great time our Cub Scouts had with our service project. We helped our Charter Organization, the Elks of Corona, with a "Parking Lot Beautification."
Half of the Scouts that attended the project had just joined the week prior, and it proved to be a fantastic way to get to know our new families. The Journey to Excellence Program made us realize that we should be doing more with our Charter Organization, and what a difference it has already made.

Leaders’ ‘Walk the Walk’ Challenge Launched
Promoting healthy living has always been a high priority for the BSA. So much so, in fact, that last year we officially introduced our healthy living initiative, which seeks to make sure Scouts and all young people are healthy in mind, body, and spirit. As part of this initiative, we are working both with first lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move program to solve the challenge of childhood obesity, and with the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition to empower youth to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and good nutrition.
To help our leaders set a strong example, a new BSA Fit site has been launched on scouting.org that features resources for living a healthy life. In addition, a series of “Walk the Walk” blogs are included that will track the progress of BSA leaders and staff members as they strive to improve their health through diet and exercise.
