California Inland Empire Council Monday Memo |
 |
Welcome to our June 27th, 2011 Monday Memo |
Message From Our Council President Jim Prior
Volunteers are the lifeblood of many community groups and this definitely includes Boy Scouts of America.
Our volunteers give their time freely to take training, learn improved ways to recruit new youth to our movement, learn more about selling popcorn, learn better ways to service the units in our Council, support the youth starting out in the service branch of Boy Scouts that is Order of the Arrow and still more were up on the hill completing the Wood Badge leadership training. Wow what a mouth full and all this was happening on one day.
Can you imagine if we could just get more to go with you to these events what we imagine what we could do for the youth in our communities. Have you been to Philmont Training Center? What a place to share ideas, learn new ideas and try the ideas out. Your council key 3 just spent a week at Philmont to better our abilities to plan for the future.
Another group of volunteers have started the process of developing a 5 year strategic plan for the council, who, what, where, why, when and how will be laid in an orderly manner to determine what the council needs to do to support your boys and girls in Scouting. This all ties together with Journey to Excellence, the Boy Scouts of America’s way to help us know how we are doing and where we need to improve.
Astronaut Speaks to Scouts From Space
Distinguished Eagle Scout and NASA astronaut Mike Fossum is embarking on another incredible journey as he spends nearly six months aboard the International Space Station as part of Expeditions 28 and 29. Fossum launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on June 7 aboard Russia’s Soyuz TMA-02M spacecraft.
After reaching orbit, Fossum—who is an active Scouter in the Sam Houston Area Council—placed a call to a few lucky Scouts at Camp Perry in the Rio Grande Council. (Read more about the incredible logistics of arranging the call in the next installment of Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca’s “Bob’s Blog.”)
Scouts can follow Fossum’s incredible journey in space with periodic journal updates and photos on nesa.org. They also may follow along via coverage on NASA TV.
BSA to Be Featured on "Only in America With Larry the Cable Guy"

Scouts and Venturers from the Heart of America Council and the Theodore Naish Scout Reservation will take center stage in the July 12 episode of “Only in America With Larry the Cable Guy” on the History Channel.
In the program, the comedian and actor known as Larry the Cable Guy crisscrosses the nation “to find the people, places, and things that define this nation’s unique history.” Past episodes have shown Larry spend time as a county sheriff, an astronaut, a gold prospector, a mule breeder, and a trucker.
Volunteers from the Heart of America Council were chosen to help develop the program content and script for the episode, which was shot last fall. “Only in America With Larry the Cable Guy” airs on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. Central.

Important Insights When You're Out On The Trail....They Could Save Your Life!
As we (Crew 6, Riverside) were hiking out of Dry Lake Saturday morning, a ranger on horseback complimented our group because we were together and not spread out on the trail. I thought that was nice. I know we had seen a pair of leaders and a scout at the last place we stopped. We passed one of the leaders and a scout as we followed the other leader down the trail, which I thought was a little strange why they did not stay together. At our next rest point we found several boys waiting as the leader we were following walk joined them. I then understood why we were complimented. The Forest Service ranger on the horse had seen a bunch of boys going down the trail without any leaders.
A couple of days later I saw a post on the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association bulletin board. “This is a shout out to the Scout Troop that was on San G the weekend of June 18 and 19. Please review your Leave No Trace paractices. I don't believe unnecessarily cutting switchbacks is an LNT principle, adults and Scouts alike. Also please review group management and safety procedures. You were on a dangerous parallel with the Jared Negrete incident from 1991. Please follow link if you aren't familiar. http://www.micro-mono.com/docs/boyscout.pdf”
The post can bulletin board be seen at http://members.boardhost.com/sgva/msg/1308757467.html.
Hiking in the San Gorgonio Wilderness a couple of times a month for the past few months, I have seen several scout groups on Saturday morning hiking into the wilderness. They come from San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles Area and from out council as well. A few of them get fairly spread out on the trail. However, I have not seen any of them cut switch backs. I have seen several older adults in fair condition with red faces, sweating profusely lagging behind the boys. In most cases there was a younger leader in the front of the group. However, they may still have been spread out over a half mile or so.
Who do I think of anytime I see a group spread out? Jared. I remember when he disappeared off the Vivian Creek Trail several years ago. I remember the news and all the volunteers trying to find this boy. They still have not found any trace of him. It seems to me that the group that was out this past weekend does not know about Jared. I would hope that the group that was posted about on the bulletin board or any other group that gets spread out realizes the danger of getting spread out on the trail, especially in a wilderness area where you may never be found. We all need to be reminded time to time that there are real dangers out there and we need to be vigilant in keeping our group together, lest we have another Jarred.
Thanks, Greg Palmer
Instructor Corp Update
The first week was all just training. Most of the instructors arrived on Sunday, June 12th from all over the country and all of the instructors (there are 36 of us) were divided into three different brigades with different people from all over the country and were given our sleeping arrangements and assignments (12 man military tents on cots). On Monday the 13th, we spent the day in the classrooms at the Glen Jean National Guard Armory learning from the park service about the history of the area as well as the native plants and species that live in the area. We spent Tuesday and Wednesday after that on the trail where we worked with members of the International Mountain Biking Association and the National Parks Rangers learning how to build the world-class multi-use mountain biking trails that we will be building all summer long. We spent that Thursday mountain biking with one of the local mountain biking outfitters, getting used to riding on trails similar to the ones we will be building. We then spent that Friday as well as Monday through Friday of this week building trails in both the Craigs Branch and the Garden Ground areas of the New Gorge National River park. Both yesterday and today were spent getting certified in American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid and we will hit the trail again tomorrow, our last day on the trail before the participants get here.
This is a picture of an inslope turn that me and my crew built and finished the other day (very time consuming and difficult to build for mountain biking, we built another that was way more awesome with a full rock wall supporting it and everything but we didnt get a chance to get a picture of it though).
Thanks Kyle Sitarski and Adam Purvis Both are at the Summit on the I Corps team ( Instructor Corps). Kyle is a past Lodge Chief and current Section W4S Chief and Adam is the immediate past Lodge Chief. Both are from our council. | |
