                     Monday Memo

Welcome to our July 18th, 2011 Monday Memo

Seven Scouts Attain Eagle Rank

Seven Riverside Boy Scouts from Troop 760 have helped sick children in Loma Linda, the homeless in Hemet, horses in Riverside, an elementary school in Moreno Valley and the forest near Big Bear Lake in pursuit of the rank of Eagle. Many of the projects the teens worked on were close to their hearts.

Mason Jeffrey Loveland, 16, and Stephen Thomaz Bannister, 17, each oversaw projects to plant more than 3,000 pine seedlings in burned areas near Big Bear Lake.

"My family used to do a lot of camping in those mountains. My dad was also a firefighter in that area," Mason said. "I spent a lot of summers there and I wanted to give back to a community that held a lot of fond memories for me."

What Makes a Trained Leader

A direct contact Scout leader is considered fully trained and entitled to wear the Trained leader emblem when they have completed the following training courses required for their specific position.

Fast Start Training. Fast Start training is the first step for all new leaders and should be taken immediately after they register and before they meet with any youth members. New leaders choose the Fast Start they need to take: Cub Scout Leader, Boy Scout Leader, Varsity Scout Leader, or Venturing Crew Leader. All Fast Start courses are easily accessible through MyScouting’s Online Learning Center. (If you are new to Scouting, you will be asked to create an account.)

Youth Protection Training. Youth Protection training is required for all leaders. Youth safety is our number one priority and adults need to know the rules for keeping themselves safe, too. Comprehensive Youth Protection training teaches all the do’s and don’ts of working with youth. The training is offered through MyScouting’s Online Learning Center , or it may be taken as part of an district or council training course.

This is Scouting. This Is Scouting picks up where Fast Start leaves off with six modules of training: The Mission of Scouting, Programs for All ages, Scouting Is Fun, Scouting in the Community, Keeping Our Youth Safe, and Scouting’s Legacy. The training takes about an hour and can be found on MyScouting’s Online Learning Center .

Position Specific Training. Leader position specific training is based on the leader’s position. These courses are taught by informed trainers who know how to engage groups and make learning fun. These courses are offered by the district or council as group training, or may be done as small groups or by personal coaching.

"How hard to realize that every camp of men or beast has this glorious starry firmament for a roof! In such places standing alone on the mountain-top it is easy to realize that whatever special nests we make - leaves and moss like the marmots and birds, or tents or piled stone - we all dwell in a house of one room - the world with the firmament for its roof - and are sailing the celestial spaces without leaving any track."
