Monday Memo
 | Joseph Daniszewski Scout Executive | |
Good day and welcome to our July 20th Monday Memo
1. That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind: The Apollo 11 mission
Forty years to the day, I was an 11 year old Second Class Scout, attending Boy Scout Summer Camp at Camp Woodland on the shores of Oneida Lake, 39 miles north east of Syracuse, New York. What a great summer! I earned my first merit badge, Nature. Shot a rifle and bow and arrow for the first time. Really enjoyed the Camp Dining Hall cuisine ... I thought the "axel grease" of government peanut butter mixed with jelly was a treat! At the end of our week at camp, I also finished the requirements for First Class Scout.
That night, July 20, 1969, all 148 Scouts and Leaders were crowded around 2 19" Black and White Televison sets in the Dining Hall, watching and waiting, waiting and watching for Eagle Scout Neil Armstrong to make history. We saw Astronaut Armstrong climb down the ladder of the lunar module, Eagle and say those words that have stayed with us ever since: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
What a great summer for America!
What a great summer to be a scout!
Let's keep working hard and making the sacrifices so all young men and young women can enjoy great scouting experiences!
A grateful Scout Executive salutes you for all you do for our young people!

3. Leave No Trace taught all summer at Camp Emerson at the Boeseker Scout Reservation
Boseker Scout Reservation has operated for the past 90 years in Idyllwild, California. The camp is nestled at 6,000 feet of elevation and surrounded by pines, granite boulders, and not too far away from Tahquitz a famous mountain and rock climbing area. We had the pleasure of working with the Environmental Science group at camp, and a Trainer Course. Our first session with the scouts we focused on how to be stewards of the land, and how to apply Leave No Trace on outings and daily recreation. We played a couple of games from the PEAK pack, ?Minimum Impact Match & How Prepared Are You??. Paula Boothe a Master Educator, was providing a Trainer Course for Boy Scout Leaders at camp, and we sat in and did a couple of 101 activities for the group and answered specific Leave NO Trace questions. Thank You so much to all the camp staff Sue & Paula, and everyone else for making us feel right at home, We love Idyllwild! Have a great rest of summer & camp!
