Summer Time Fun with Troop 652
In June, Troop 652 took a backpacking trip in the Ice house Canyon area. The hike was a 12 mile loop and had about 2,600 feet of elevation gain. We had 7 Scouts and 7 adults accomplish this trek. For most of these Scouts and Scouters, it was their first backpacking trip. There was a mandatory 8 mile training hike in the San Gorgonio Wilderness Area the weekend before to make sure everyone could make the trek. We had great weather and everyone had a great time. The Scouts are looking forward to the next backpacking trip in September!

Eagle Scout Service Project Spotlight!
Native American Tongva Tribe Dwelling Eagle Project. This project was just completed by Nick Mason of Corona Troop 54. The project was a request from the Hidden Valley Wildlife Area and Nature Center in Riverside.
The Dwelling is a historical replica of a Kish that was the living quarters for the local Native American tribe called the Tongva that lived along the Santa Ana River basin. The Tongva would build the dome structure with bent branches lashed together and covered with cattail leaves from the nearby river bank. To make a long lasting replica the structure was built with rebar lashed together with stainless steel wire and painted with durable rusty metal primer. The leaves were cut from the nearby river bank just as when the original inhabitants lived here.
Because of the complexity of the project it involved eight Saturdays of work with five of them being on site for assembly. Many volunteers from troop 54, other local troops and family members all helped through the various phases of construction. Much of the prep work involved bending all 440 feet of rebar to accurate curves to fit together into the dome shape. Assembly of the rebar required about 200 lashings using stiff wire to ensure long lasting construction. Painting the frame progressed quickly once it was discovered the cups used for the paint were dissolving slowly and would last only about an hour. Stripping the leaves and hanging them on the structure took two full days to complete and used a trailer full of fresh cut plants.
The Kish is the cornerstone of a plan to create a full village depicting life as a Tongva tribe member that will include another smaller Kish, a grinding stone, cooking area and ceremonial dance circle. Tours are conducted six days a week for local school and nature groups to understand the local wildlife and plants. Now they will also be able to learn about the original inhabitants and experience a home they lived in.
Hidden Valley Wildlife Area has a list of available Eagle Scout projects that will continue to improve the quality of the tours they conduct for local youth.

Trek Safety
From a day hike in the foothills to a weeklong expedition in the Sierras, hiking is a great activity for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts alike. But the simplest hikes aren't free from risk - a turned ankle, heat stress, or getting separated from the group are all possible. The Sweet Sixteen of BSA's Safety is a great tool to use when planning any activity.
For example, when hiking switchbacks there is a tendency for members to get separated - sometimes by a 1/2 mile or more. By enforcing the use of the buddy system, no one will be left alone on the trail.
The BSA has developed the Trek Safely program which is designed to help Scouting groups be fully prepared for a backcountry trek. It will help each youth member and adult leader recognize situations that could develop in which the group will have to adjust its schedule or route, or even make camp for the night because of weather circumstances or an injured or ill crew member. Crews that address possible scenarios in advance are less likely to be surprised on the trail. Contingency planning is critical to the success of every trip. For more information, download the Trek Safely Pamphlet.
