2010 California Inland Empire Council Philmont Trek | BSA-100 is previlent everywhere in Scouting. The CIEC Philmont trek crews just returned from the largest Boy Scout Camp in the World and a couple of the greatest 12 day treks ever. Along with beautiful Philmont backcountry they saw bears, deer, turkey, hawks, rattle snakes, rabbits, & quail. They saw beautiful sunrises including one from 11,300 feet near Mt Philipps and another from the Tooth of Time (9003'). Both crews enjoyed backcountry programs, including Black Powder rifle, 30.06 shooting, Shot Gun shooting, burro racing, challenge events, and Philmont history. Twenty two Scouts and scouters completed the treks, one crew doing over 65 miles ( summiting Mt Phillips 11,736 feet) and the other over 85 miles ( summiting Mt Baldy at 12,450 plus feet). Participants received the Philmont Trek Arrowhead Award. The only way to get this is to earn it and this being the 100th anniversary of Scouting makes this award all the more special. BSA-100 is at Philmont and the spirit of the 100th anniversary is seen everywhere from base camp to the most remote backcountry camps. BSA-100 is here in our council too. We have been celebrating all year with tons of great things for all scouts to do. Now the year is winding down but the party is still in full form especially if your unit has signed up for the council's big birthday party bash on September 24 thru 26, 2010. There are over 4000 Scouts and scouters signed up already - registration is still open for this event, sign up by August 1st to secure your patch. Yes the patch will have BSA-100 on it too but you will have to be there to earn one. CIEC BSA-100 Birthday Party September 24-26, 2010, celebrating 100 years of scouting . . . see you there! |

Simple and exciting! Scout Surge 9/11 is a great way to harness the emerging youth-driven social dynamics and extends the voice of our movement in new and powerful ways. Our youth need to understand and remember what happened on September 11, 2001, when terrorists attacked our country. This is a terrific opportunity for engagement that reaches youth in their world via the communication tools they use. Visit www.scoutsurge911.org for details and suggestions. Also, during the jamboree, nearly 30,000 youth will receive information on Scout Surge 9/11. Their involvement in this effort is a wonderful way to harness the energy, camaraderie, and patriotism of the life-changing jamboree experience. Scout Surge 9/11 is a great activity that youth can collectively connect to as they create their own ideas and social networks to commemorate and remember one of the most enduring human experiences in American history. In short, it's a great opportunity to stay connected after the jamboree in a way that has profound meaning and relevance to our nation. This is also a great way to create positive "buzz" in local communities just before and during the big recruiting push this fall. Join the Surge! Keeping the ball out of the gutter and having so much fun with friends and family, at the same time earning a belt loop and pin. Scouts learned the rules of the game, proper lane etiquette, and what it takes to keep a bowling alley running with a behind the scene tour of the bowling pin machines and the mechanics shop. Loud machines in the back area and even louder screams of cheering each other on down the lane made for a great evening of fun. We even saw a Turkey or two. 27 Scouts and over 35 Family members and friends took up 12 lanes which was a great boost for the local bowling alley. All the Moms sported their new Pink shirts and took pride in all the Cub Scouts accomplished. A great big thank you to Kia & Linda Kerr for all the hard work that went in to putting this event together and keeping all the shoe size correct. Great Job!
New Outdoor Awards Unveiled Two new awards have been developed to promote “outdoorism” for Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts. Please share this information with your volunteers and staff and publish the links on your Web site and in your council newsletter. National Outdoor Challenge Award The National Outdoor Challenge is a unit award that recognizes troops/teams that maintain or increase the amount of outdoor activity when compared to the previous year. The application is available here, http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/430-016_WB.pdf and is due at the end of 2010. With the release of this award, the National Camping Award has been discontinued; however, patches for camping nights will be available until the inventory is depleted. National Outdoor Achievement Award The National Outdoor Achievement Award recognizes Boy Scouts/Varsity Scouts who excel in outdoor participation. The award has five areas of emphasis (camping, aquatics, hiking, riding, and adventure) with rigorous requirements to earn each segment. For Scouts looking for an extra challenge, there’s the National Medal for Outdoor Achievement. This challenging award requires earning at least three of the National Outdoor Achievement segments, planning and leading a trek, earning Wilderness First Aid certification, and becoming a Leave No Trace Trainer, as well as fulfilling several other requirements. The application is available at the following link: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/430-509.pdf . News & Tidbits Mustang Newletter Read the latest Western Region Order of the Arrow news. Positive Quote ----------------------- Kindness is an inner desire that makes us want to do good things even if we do not get anything in return. It is the joy of our life to do them. When we do good things from this inner desire, there is kindness in everything we think, say, want and do. - Emmanuel Swedenborg Have a great Scouting week!
