California Life Scout Earns His Way to 2013 National Scout Jamboree

California Inland Empire Council Life scout Andrew T. Miller was given a challenge by his parents: earn 100% of his way to the 2013 National Scout Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia.

In his Council this meant that Andrew, a member of Boy Scout Troop 107 in Corona, would need to raise $2950 to cover his roundtrip airfare, four day pre-Jamboree tour of greater Philadelphia and Washington, D.C, and his 10 days of Jamboree at the Summit.  Andrew's idea: to start his own business specializing in fleur-de-lis costume jewelry and accessories.  Andrew knew there was a local market for this type of business, as his mother had gone on a business trip to New Orleans and several Scouters had requested she buy fleur-de-lis jewelry items to bring back to them.

Andrew got to work researching what he would need to open his business, complete with his own federal employer number and state and city business licenses.  His parents gave him a loan and he also invested his own money for start-up costs.  Andrew also pursued the Entrepreneurship and Salesmanship merit badges and used what he was learning in his honors classes to help him get started.  "We had to create a product, do a sales presentation, and learned about gross, net and tax rates in math while in English we learned about advertising and marketing, so it fit right in."  At his inaugural jewelry sale in May 2011, Andrew's gross for the evening was $393.  "I was able to clear my $200 Jamboree deposit from that first sale," Andrew said, "and I have kept ahead and made every one of my monthly Jamboree payments since."  Andrew sells at local scout unit and community events, has home jewelry parties, takes special orders, and in January 2012 expanded to selling nationwide on eBay.  Andrew's eBay ID is "bsajamboreebound" and he often gets notes of encouragement from BSA supporters around the country, some of them sharing their Jamboree stories.

Now in business a little more than year, Andrew has held more than 30 local sales and has made eBay sales in 14 states.  He has nearly achieved his Jamboree fundraising goal, but Andrew isn't giving up his business after Jamboree.  "Since I became a Boy Scout, my parents have made me earn my way in Scouting because it's a part of the Law - a Scout is thrifty.  Once I'm done with my Jamboree payments, I'm just going to raise funds for my next adventure."

IE Stampede 2012 – Right From The Start; You Won’t Want To Miss It!

Ceremonies are at the heart of what Scouting represents. As Scouts we're taught to "do your best, do your duty and to God and your Country". Scouting also teaches us to be respectful to those organizations and individuals that have supported us along the Scouting trail.

The opening ceremony for our 2012 Stampede will remind our Scouts the importance of honoring the flag of our country, their Scouting unit and it's charter partner. In addition, a military presence has been requested that will be sure to impress and leave an impact.

Please bring your unit flag as we will parade the colors to the opening ceremony which will take place at 8:30am at the Meadowlark Pavilion. Once we are gathered together Cahuilla Lodge Chief, will lead our opening flag ceremony.

Come prepared with your unit to participate in this memorable opening ceremony.

We look forward to seeing you at the Stampede!"

Northern Tier Canoeing Adventure

Troop 90 of Riverside recently sent two crews to Northern Tier for a canoeing adventure. Northern Tier is located just outside of Ely, Minnesota in the boundary waters to Canada. A typical canoe trek at Northern Tier runs from 5 to 6 days and can cover over 50 miles. The great thing about the canoe base is that with the help of your interpreter you set your own course, and with hundreds of lakes to choose from, no two treks are the same. Our two crews chose the same direction, but ended up with very different adventures. The days were spent canoeing and fishing from lake to lake with portages in between. A portage is where you have to take all of your gear and the canoe across land to get to the next lake and if it wasn’t for the mosquitoes, horse flies, ticks, and leaches it would be the ultimate canoe trip. Six scouts and scouters also earned the Triple Crown of High Adventure by completing treks at all three national high adventure bases.  In 6 days we caught numerous fish, covered over 60 miles, 20 lakes, dozens of portages, and too many mosquito bites to count. We can hardly wait for the Summit to open.

The 2012 Popcorn Sale has begun!

The Scouts of the California Inland Empire Council have begun their annual popcorn sale – Kick Off: August 1st! The scouts are selling Trails End Popcorn in various varieties.

The annual popcorn sale is scouting’s main fundraiser for boys in the Scouting program.

About 70 percent of the sale’s proceeds go to Scouting in this area.

In addition to earning prizes, scouts also have the opportunity to fund their entire year of Scouting – with just one fundraiser.

Trails End also offers scholarships – Scouts who sell $2,500 will receive 6 percent of their total sales invested in their very own college scholarship account.

The Scouts also support our military. The Military program allows scouts to have popcorn sent all around the world to military personnel.

For more information about Popcorn, contact Veronica Whitman at (909) 793-2463 ext. 122.

Free Entrance for Scouts to 5th Annual Pacific Astronomy and Telescope Show in Pasadena

End of the world theories debunked at 5th Annual PacificAstronomy and Telescope Show in Pasadena

My name is Harold Johnson and I am the communications representativefor the non-profit Riverside Telescope Makers Conference (RTMC). I am inviting scouting groups to attend an astronomy show that features astronomy-relatedtalks for beginners and intermediates and a star party.

The 5th annual Pacific Astronomy and Telescope Show (PATS) hosted by the RTMC will take place September 22 and 23 at the Pasadena Convention Center. This is the largest amateur astronomy show on the West coast. Presenters at the EXPO include Griffith Observatory’s Ed Krupp, Fred Espenak also known as Mr. Eclipse and Star Trek Technical Advisor Andre Boormanis. Bob Naeye from Sky and Telescope Magazine and Michael Bakich from Astronomy Magazine will also present. Dr. Krupp will discuss the Mayan calendar and debunk “end of the world” theories.

In addition to astronomy-related talks for beginners and intermediates held all day Saturday and Sunday, there are solar telescopes for daily viewing of the sun and a Saturday night star party featuring viewings of planets, the moon and selected celestial objects.

PATs offers free admission to individual scouts and scouting groups in uniform.

For more information about PATS, please visit www.telescopeshow.org or contact Harold Johnson at RTMCHarold@gmail.com.

Throughout the 44 years of its existence RTMC has offered free admission to scouting groups. No one in a scouting uniform will be charged an admission fee. Scouting groups interested in attending the PATS are asked to contact Harold Johnson at RTMCHarold@gmail.com for an entrance pass. Please send a contact address, the approximate number of scouts and the number of accompanying adults attending. Scouts must wear scouting uniforms. Since telescope viewing occurs after dark, we encourage adult supervision.

The Riverside Telescope Makers Conference is a non-profit organization founded by Clifford W. Holmes and the Riverside Astronomical Society in 1969. After having Astronomy Expo events at Riverside Community College and in Idyllwild, the Expo found a permanent home at its present location of YMCA Camp Oakes. Five years ago RTMC held the first PATS at the Pasadena Convention center.
