Roundup Cub Scout Recruitment Campaign

There has never been a more exciting time to be a Cub Scout or a Cub Scout leader than now.  Your dens, packs, schools and communities will become stronger as more boys and their parents participate in a quality Cub Scout program.

The 2012 Fall Roundup will soon be upon us.  The high point of the Fall Roundup is each pack’s School Night for Scouting.

All Cub Scout packs are encouraged to hold their School Night for Scouting (Join Night) by September 30th.

Be Ready for the Fall Roundup – Top 10 Action Items for Every Pack!

  1. Attend your district’s Fall Roundup Kickoff & Training – Attendance at this training event will be critical to your pack’s success.  You will receive your pack’s 2012 Fall Roundup Kit containing all of the materials needed for your pack’s successful fall recruiting effort.  Check with your district to find out what day the district’s Fall Roundup Kickoff & Training is scheduled for.
  2. Schedule your Pack’s School Night for Scouting by August 1, 2012.  Confirm the date, time, and location.
  3. Meet with your school principal to share your pack’s plan for the Fall Roundup.  Confirm his/her support for distributing flyers and conducting Boy Talks prior to your School Night for Scouting.
  4. Complete your pack’s 2012-2013 activity calendar.  Use your calendar to promote all the fun things new Cub Scouts will be doing when they join your pack!  Include The Council Stampede for new Cub Scouts to participate in right away.
  5. Promote your School Night for Scouting via open house, bring a friend, classroom walk-through and flyers distribution.
  6. Schedule your Parent Orientation meeting to take place no more than one week following your School Night for Scouting.
  7. Create a plan to be sure that all pack leaders, including new leaders, complete youth protection training right away.  This is a BSA requirement for all leaders.
  8. Order your flyers on time so they will be ready when you need them.  The order form will be in your 2012 Fall Roundup Kit.
  9. Get school directory and call and invite parents and boys to join.
  10. Recruit den leaders for dens that need them prior to your School Night for Scouting.  Be ready to fill those dens with new boys!

Varsity Vision Training 2012

Why attend Varsity Vision?

Varsity Vision training provides a “hands on” experience for both adult leader (Coaches) and youth leader (Captain/Squad leaders & Program Managers).  You will learn how to form, plan and execute a team meeting and develop a program event.

  • The values of Scouting are taught, used and reinforced
  • An overnight experience gets you away from distractions
  • Youth and adult leadership of the team will both learn their proper roles
  • FUN. FUN. FUN. Hands on learning methods make the experience very enjoyable
  • Take home skills for team leadership that will enable successful planning, meetings and develop great activities.
  • Future opportunity to share your skills of leadership with others

Update on Training Awards for Adult Unit Leaders

In 2011, the National Council’s Awards Committee conducted a review of the hundreds of awards presented to Scouts and adults in the BSA. Many recommendations were made to update procedures and the awards themselves.

Among the recommendations was the update of the unit leader training awards requirements and a review of the Cub Scout leader recognition awards. These recommendations have been reviewed by the national volunteer training committee and a task force of unit-level leaders. Some awards have been eliminated and all of the requirements for the remaining awards have been updated.

The forms and requirements have been simplified. The committees do not believe that means easier. They are along the same lines and “degree of difficulty” as the previous requirements, but will be less complicated and consistent across the awards and the phases of the Scouting program.

The training awards and keys are designed to recognize unit Scouters for tenure, basic and continuing training, and successful performance in their leadership role.

The changes and other considerations:

The Cubmaster Award has been discontinued. Cubmasters may now earn the Scouter’s Key Award and may wear the Scouter’s Key knot with a Cub Scouting device.

The Cub Scouter and Pack Trainer Awards have been discontinued. Cub Scout pack leaders may earn the Scouter’s Training Award and may wear the Scouter’s Training Award knot with a Cub Scouting device.

The Tiger Cub and Webelos Den Leader’s Awards have been discontinued. All den leaders may earn a new Den Leader’s Training Award medal that is being created, and may wear the Den Leader’s Training Award knot (identical to the previous Cub Scout Den Leader Award knot) with the appropriate device. A Tiger Cub den leader device is also being developed.

Scouters who have earned the old awards will still be able to wear the old awards and knots.

Scouters who have begun to work on the Cub Scout Leader Recognition Awards will still be able to earn them as long as they are completed by the following dates:

  • Tiger Cub Den Leader Award – December 31, 2012
  • Webelos Den Leader Award – December 31, 2012
  • Cubmaster Award – December 31, 2013
  • Pack Trainer Award – December 31, 2013
  • Cub Scouter Award – December 31, 2013

Cub Scouters who have not started to work on an award may only earn the new awards and must use the new requirements.

Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing awards, knots, and devices have not been changed. Only the requirements have been updated. Leaders who have started to earn these awards may use either set of requirements, but Scouters who have not started to work on an award may only use the new requirements.

Progress record forms with the new requirements for these awards can be found at www.Scouting.org/training.
