Welcome to our August 12th, 2013 Monday Memo Thoughts and Prayers for Robert "Bob" Kelly It is with sadness that the council announces Bob Kelly's passing away today. Bob was a dedicated volunteer, serving in many roles for the Temescal District, including District Chairman. He was also a member of the Executive Board. He was a hardworking member of the CIEC staff, serving as District Executive, Accounting Specialist, Training Chair, Woodbadge Coordinator and Order of the Arrow Lodge Staff Advisor. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bob and his wife Bev. | | Three Peaks District Popcorn Kick Off We want to thank Troop 43, Troop 310 & Troop 6006 for their help in preparing and running our games and skit. We would also like to thank the following packs for attending: Pack 46, Pack 374, Pack 6006, Pack 007. We had 124 people show up for the food, games and to have a Poppin good time learning about popcorn! Thanks again for your help, Pam Caloia Silverwood Lake Roundup On August 2 - 4 was the inaugural Silverwood Lake Roundup for Arrowmen and their families. Order of the Arrow members from Aca and Yamiwa Chapters organized a shoreline cleanup service project and family camp at Silverwood Lake SRA. Nine people attended the service project that consisted of kayaking to an area nicknamed "styrofoam cove". We picked up so much trash there that we ran out of trash bags and one of the adults had to paddle to a marina to get more trash bags from a ranger. At the end of the project we were presented the greatest challenge of the day, how to haul all that trash back to the closest boat launch. Luckily we had the perfect ratio of trash bags to kayaks so we were able to strap the bags to the decks and haul them off. Several of the kayaks had 3 FULL trash bags strapped to them that made paddling a bit difficult. It was really funny when some of the park maintenance staff were confused when they saw a small mountain of trash bags piled around a single trash can (we were instructed by the rangers to haul the trash there). After the service project we held a potluck lunch that was attended by 16 people. The plan after lunch was to play a game of kayak football. The weather and scenery was so gorgeous that we opted to just go out in the boats and explore a unique feature of Silverwood Lake, the floating restrooms. We paddled out a few hundred yards to one of them to find it out of order. We then decided to paddle a couple miles east to another floating restroom and that's when the adventure kicked into high gear. We are able to confirm that the southeast finger of the lake is indeed known for heavy wind gusts. Everyone had crazy huge fun playing around on the wind driven waves and boat wakes. A few times a few people almost swamped, but except for the occasional spray of water in the face everyone came back huge smiles and dry clothes. A special thank you to: Troop 76 from Palm Desert for the loan of the kayaks; Lonnie Reddick for prepping the trailer to haul the boats; Paul Reyes with the tour plan for this event; Christina Quinn and Leanne Schock for covering the food; Taudra Schock, Doug Cheley, and Robin Lund for serving as safety officers and project organizers; Alex Miller, Clint Miller, Troyton Schock, Jarod Quinn, and Curtis Stiede for attending the service project. Kurt Wampole, Shooting Sports Director, (909) 586-5395 Troop 720's First Eagle Scout "Honor Guard, please present our candidate for Troop 720's first Eagle Scout - Philip Lorenz" These were the words echoed during Troop 720's First Eagle Court of Honor Sunday, August 4th 2013 in honor of Philip Lorenz. Community Baptist Church (CBC), where Philip and his family attend religious services, was the location of this grand event. Over one hundred scouts, scout leaders, dignitaries, friends and family were in attendance. The ceremony was driven by pride, honor, humility and of course a little bit of humor about Philips past. A highlight of the ceremony was Philip's request for an "Eagle's Nest". More that fifteen Eagle Scouts from at least ten diffrent troops took the stage, announced their Name, Troop and Date they received their Eagle. It was a proud moment when Philip himself was able to round out the line with his announcement "Philip Lorenz, Troop 720's First Eagle Scout June 20th, 2013."
