Monday Memo

Scout Executive

Good day and welcome to our August 23rd, 2010 Monday Memo

Helendade Needs Your Help!

Summer camp is over and we can start working on the pool house. I want to thank all of you for your help, last year. We accomplished a tremendous amount of work. Rising from the ashes of last year to a 6000 sq ft lodge. The lodge survived the winter with minimal amount of weather damage, but we need to get the roof and walls on so it will survive another winter.

We have scheduled to start work again Sept. 11-12 (OA Ordeal weekend), Sept. 18-19, October 23-24 and October 30-31. November weekends will be scheduled after we find out how the weather is doing.

We will be putting roof sheeting up and the final trusses. After that is done, we will need to get the tar paper and roof shingles on, install windows, and then close up the walls.

We are still in need of roofing shingles, windows, and doors. And of course we still need toilets, shower stalls, faucets, ducting, etc.

We will need help from a framing contractor to help finish. Jay Brown has been working out of town and does not know how many weekends that he can dedicate at this time. I can't THANK Jay enough for the dedication that he gave us last year. If there is someone that could step up and help we would appreciate it.

The above weekends are days that I am available. If someone would like to help out and lead a group of volunteers we could give job assignments on other weekends, too. We need people that can donate items, stand on the roof, hand items up to the workers on the roof, take pictures, and cook lunch. So we can put anyone to work that is willing to help.

If you can help, please sign up by completing this brief form: Click Here

Share Your Results….and Best Practices

The 2010 National Scout Jamboree was an event to remember. For the first time ever, Scouts shot clays at Camp Thunder, engineered giant robots at Technology Quest, and kept in touch with mom, dad, and others thanks to an unparalleled cell phone and wireless network by AT&T. Of course, a highlight for all who have worked to bring the 1OOth to life was the nationwide broadcast of our Centennial Celebration Show, A Shining Light Across America. If you missed it, you can still watch the archived version online.

Shining Light brought together Scouts, Scouters, friends, and families across the nation. How many? Below are some statistics that show what we know about the largest ever—and first virtual—gathering in BSA history. However, with so many ways for people to share in this monumental event, the true size of the gathering may never be known.

  • 220 “formal” viewing events nationwide, representing more than half of all BSA local councils
  • 75,000–85,000 Scouts, leaders, and visitors at the jamboree’s arena
  • More than 25,000 attendees at local events reported so far (by just a quarter of the councils that held formal events). If you haven’t reported on your event, click here to enter your results and help us recognize the breadth of the effort.
  • More than 25,000 households, groups, or individuals tuning into BYU-TV
  • Approximately 100,000 webcast hits to the Ustream broadcast site during the live event and 45,000 since

These results are impressive. However, it’s important to remember that our goal was so much more than achieving a certain number of viewers. It was to provide every Scout, leader, volunteer, parent, alumnus, supporter, and friend a chance to participate in a shared celebration. Both nationally and locally, Shining Light demonstrated how a single event can inspire, engage, and raise awareness with the public. It was an incredible evening of shared success and partnership between national and local councils!

However, we also know that Shining Light was only one event on your very busy 2010 calendars. From modifying existing events to creating new traditions, councils were creative, strategic, and successful in local level engagements. To keep that energy going, and inspire others to similar success, we’re putting together a 1OOth Anniversary Best Practices Report. We’re seeking information about entire events and individual strategies. Simply fill out this form and send it to 100year@bsamail.org, or submit your response online to collaborate with other councils on our Share Your Success discussion forum. The anniversary is far from over, so this will be a working document that can be built through the remainder of the year.

Together, launching our second century of service!

Venturing Crew 90 Returns from Florida Sea Base, Scuba Adventure

Four youth and three adult members of Venturing Crew 90 in Mt. Rubidoux District returned last week after spending an exciting time at Florida Sea Base in Islamorada. They did the Scuba Adventure, a program for Scouts and Scouters who are certified open water scuba divers.

When they started planning the High Adventure over a year ago, only two of the crew were already certified divers, so the rest of the group made the commitment to get their certifications. They took the PADI Open Water Diver course through Sport Chalet, which taught the skills and knowledge needed for scuba diving in both classroom and pool setting during twice a week sessions for an entire month. The certification also required open water dives; some members did theirs at Laguna Beach and in San Diego and others at Avalon in Catalina Island.

The crew’s week at Sea Base started as soon as they arrived with the Boy Scout Swim Test in the marina area, and getting scuba gear issued. The following morning their scuba skills were checked in the pool before heading out to sea for their first dive. Crew 90 along with a Troop from St. Petersburg, Florida, were assigned to the boat the BSA Centennial Eagle, under the stewardship of Capt. Carol and First Mate Jacob, and both had safety and fun in mind for the divers. Each crew was assigned to a Dive Master; Crew 90 ended up having two, the first was Dave for the first half of the week, and the second was Kevin. Both were well equipped to carry out their jobs and a great benefit to all of the crew members.

In all the Crew experienced 11 open water dives at various coral reefs, diving to depths of up to 60 feet. The reefs were full of flora and fauna: brain coral, fan coral, sea grasses, Christmas Tree worms, angel fish, sea turtles, stingrays, parrotfish, and the list goes on. One of the dives occurred at night using underwater flashlights, providing a vastly different environment for the divers!

Florida Sea Base became the first Scouting facility in the U.S. to be designated as a Scout Center for Excellence of Nature and Environment (S.C.E.N.E.) and Crew 90 started the requirements to earn the patch while there. They also learned about coral and coral reef ecosystems and so were able to obtain the PADI Project AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialty certification card. Some also earned the Duty To God patch.

While Florida days and nights were hot and humid, the dives in the temperate ocean were invigorating, and the Crew’s time at Florida Sea Base is filled with wonderful memories. Photos may be viewed at http://www.bsatroop90.org/pastevents.asp

Crew 90 Youth: Jennifer Anderson, Ian Hare, Harrison McMillen, and Jeff Watson. Crew 90 Adults: Christy Brown Anderson, Thomas McMillen, and Thomas Watson.

Boy Scouts pledge to save more than 50 million gallons of water over the next year

In July, the Wyland Foundation joined more than 50,000 Boy Scouts in Ft. AP Hill, Virginia at the 2010 National Boy Scout Jamboree, which marked the 100th Anniversary of Scouting.   As part of the SCUBA exhibit, Scouts joined Wyland and the Wyland Foundation team to paint a series of 200-square-foot canvas murals featuring marin! e life found around the world including a great white shark, marlins, orcas, and sea birds.

“Art is a powerful way to introduce kids to many of today’s environmental issues,” says Wyland. “By looking at the world through an artist’s eyes, they see all the plants, animals, and people who depend on clean water for survival — and suddenly the issue of water conservation becomes real.” After experiencing SCUBA first hand and adding their artistic touches to the collaborative murals, Scouts made pledges to reduce their water consumption.  Throughout the Jamboree, Scouts pledged to save over 50 million gallons of water in the next year!
