Help Shape the Future of the California Inland Empire Council

Through the dedication of many volunteers, the Boy Scouts of America remains one of the foremost youth programs of character development and values-based leadership training in America.

A recent study showed that 83% of former Scouts said that there were real-life situations where the training they received as a Scout helped them be a better leader, and 50% said that Scouting had a positive effect on their career development and advancement.

Today, nearly 1.2 million adults provide leadership and mentoring to Scouts across the country.

In order to stay connected and support our volunteers, we’re in the midst of putting together a unique Alumni project that will help support all our Packs, Troops, Teams and Crews. Keep reading the Monday Memo for details!

Troop 13 Marker Rededication

I wanted to share our latest project and acknowledge the assistance of Troop 13, Pack 542, Den 1 Webelos, and Girl Scout Troop 472 as part of the opening ceremonies.

The Marker was first installed in 1959, stolen sometime in 2006 and replaced last week. Troop 13 yearly cleans the area around the other Historical Markers in the Valley as well. At the rededication, Troop 13 built a Flag Pole and the Colors we’re actually “raised” vs. presented. Boy Scout Forever

Dear Joe,

I just finished reading "Frozen in Time," an account of efforts to rescue the crew of a B-17 that crashed in Greenland during WWII. In the effort to rescue the crew, a Coast Guard plane went down with all hands lost. The book also focuses on the modern day efforts to locate that  plane and bodies.

Harry Spencer, the co-pilot of the B-17, was an Eagle Scout, as were at least two others on the bomber. With his knowledge of the outdoors, he helped the crew survive four months in the ice until their rescue. Upon his return to Irving, Texas, he became involved in the community and in Scouting. He credited his Scouting experience for his survival. On his gravestone is the Scout Oath. He wanted no other wording save his name and the Oath.

An amazing story. I bet he was in the Eagle Patrol.....

A Great Scouter
