Welcome to our September 19th, 2011 Monday Memo |
A Great Guard Standing Over Our Heroes
A Picture from the Minneapolis Star/Tribune taken on a June morning at the Minneapolis National Cemetery.
Letter of Commendation
Attention Jim Prior, Council President
Please accept this letter of commendation for Shawn Francis a local Cub Scout for returning my husband's wallet that he found on our local street. My husband had dropped it and did not know it was in the street. Shawn and a friend found it and Shawn said I know who's this is and we need to return it.
We have seen Shawn help his little brother and his mom while his father is deployed out of the country. He is everything a real Scout stands for. As an Eagle Scout's Mom, I know Shawn is on his way. Please recognize him for his civic mindedness and community service to others. His exemplary attitude shines when you meet him.
Sincerely, Stan Christensen

Have You Planned a Blitz Day?
A fun, easy and rewarding way for Scouts to sell popcorn is the Popcorn Blitz!
It's Easy – Set a designated time to bring boys & parents together during the sale. Parents bring minivans, trucks, and cars. Assign at least 4 boys to each parent/vehicle.
It's Fun – Boy’s & parents blanket neighborhoods with 2 boys on each side of the street stopping at every house while the parent observes from the vehicle. Popcorn is delivered immediately and money is collected.
It's Rewarding – A Scout can sell 4x as much than storefront sales. Customers spend more at home ($14.00) vs storefront ($7.45). Spend more time selling and less time delivering & collecting.
Recruitment Cards Developed for Cub Scouts
Peer-to-peer recruitment cards have been created to help Cub Scout families promote Scouting to their friends.
These cards are based on the eye-catching resources created for the 2011 recruitment campaign showing our youth engaged in fun-filled activities. An easy-to-use business card template was created to help families promote Scouting. These cards will be a great tool to be used by local councils who are facing the challenges of limited school access.
The cards can be pre-printed with contact information on the back or left blank so Scouts and their families can write invitation information for prospective Scouts. For more information on where to access and how to use this new tool, read the Cub Scout peer-to-peer recruitment flier.
The BSA has put Scouting on the map!
That’s right!
The BSA has put Scouting on the map all across the nation!
How will it work?
In a nutshell, unit leaders are able to update their unit’s Google “pin” – the bubble you see on Google maps – through MyScouting. They can add their unit meeting time, location, phone number, unit Website address if they have one, as well as a contact name for the unit. It’s easy!
Why is this important for the BSA?
- Consistent marketing. One national Web site (not 300) we can use in marketing materials, PSAs, etc., that directs potential Scouts to local units.
- Find Scouting Near You! It’s a great way to find Scouting in your community.“
- Join Now!” An easier way to invite families to join.
The Google Pin. The information in the “pins” is tied to unit records in the BSA’s database. Unit leaders will have the ability to update this information to keep it accurate and up to date. They will be able to edit it as often as they like.
“Ask Us! We can help.” A feature allows people interested in a particular unit to e‐mail
questions to the unit leaders.
For instance, say a potential Scout parent wants to know, “What night does your den meet?”
The parent would click on the “For More Information” link. The site will open up a “blind” email window (the sender never sees the actual email address.) He or she types the question and presses Enter. The leader receives the question and can respond. BeAScout keeps a record of the question and the person requesting the information and whether or not they receive a response. Plus, unit leaders, district personnel, council staff, area, region, and national‐level staff can run reports to see the requests coming in and whether or not responses are being sent.
Wood Badge Reunion 2011 Please come and join your fellow Wood Badgers for an evening of fun and comradeship. With the 2011 CIEC Wood Badge courses now in the history books, it is time to turn our attention to our annual reunion dinner. This year, both courses combined, sent 85 new Wood Badgers “off the hill” inspired and determined to leave their legacy by helping their units, districts and councils. The courses raised a total of $955 toward the World Friendship Fund with much of it being directed toward the Victory Base Council in Iraq (see www.victorybasecouncil.org for more info).
To keep the cost at only $5, the reunion is a potluck and will be held at the Norco LDS building at 3600 Norconian Drive, Norco, CA 92860. Beavers, Bobwhites, Eagles and “others” (Monkeys, Ravens, etc.) please bring a main dish. Owls, Foxes and Bears, please bring a side dish. Buffalos and Antelopes, please bring soft drinks. Dessert will be provided.
We will be having a silent auction and accepting donations to raise money for the Wood Badge Scholarship Fund. If you have items that you would be willing to donate, please let us know. Your generosity would be greatly appreciated.
And lastly … don’t forget to bring your song book!!!
Please contact nickradcliffe@verizon.net for more information. |
The final Gilwell Field flag ceremony at the fall Wood Badge course happened to coincide with the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The usual ceremony was modified so that we could fly a "Flag of Honor" where the red and white stripes were comprised of the names of all those who lost their lives on 9/11/2001. Held at exactly 8:46 am, it was a solemn yet reverent experience. It was especially poignant considering the several fire fighters, law enforcement, and active and retired military personal in attendance. |
One Big Change in Store for 2013 National Jamboree
The 2013 National Jamboree is full of changes. Along with the event having a new home at the Summit Bechtel Reserve and new adventure activities, your Scouts will see another big change in scheduling.
The new model is designed to make sure that your Scouts and Venturers experience as much of the Summit as possible. How so? Before the jamboree begins, in early 2013, participants will be able to request the adventure activities they want to try. The jamboree team will take those preferences and work to fit everyone into their top choices. Most participants should get one of their top picks, and the lines and crowds will be way down.
While Scouts will be scheduled for a Day of Giving, a full-day trek to Garden Ground Mountain and two adventure activities, which may seem like a lot, the new model also allows for plenty of free time.
In addition, the activity schedule has been extended by four hours every day. That means it will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and there will be some days without anything scheduled.
Oh, and did we mention the Summit Center (where you can find samples of all the activities) will stay open for Scouts each night after all of the visitors head home?
To find more information about the 2013 National Jamboree or to register, visit summit.scouting.org or bsajamboree.org. Additional information about the council program is available by downloading the Scout & Venturer Participant Application.
West Virginia Summit Event a Huge Success
It’s so refreshing and exciting to me that the BSA can be part of re-energizing an entire state.
I had the pleasure of meeting hundreds of people during our recent journey to West Virginia to celebrate and promote the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. We have people from all over the state and from all walks of life looking for ways to support and partner with the BSA to be part of our dream for the Summit.
Our many events to honor and recognize our latest round of donors couldn’t have gone better, and our thanks to the Greenbrier Resort for providing the wonderful facilities and backdrop to help kick off this wonderful week. We have tremendous news to share. We came into this week with $180 million in donations and left with more than $250 million!
Believe me, we’re just getting started and are expecting even more who share our vision to join this legacy opportunity. Make sure you listen to this wonderful story carried by National Public Radio describing what the Summit means to Scouting and the people of West Virginia.
The tours of the Summit site took our breath away.
Arriving in our tour buses and seeing the majestic spread of the Summit’s New River Gorge landscape was just jaw dropping. You can actually see where the villages, the subcamps, the arenas, and the lakes will be. Places with names such as Action Valley and Mayhem Mountain are coming to life. It could not have been more spectacular.
National Commissioner Tico Perez and I also took a test drive the next day on the zip line—talk about having your hair on fire! Photos are below:

Closing out this wonderful week was the second Spirit of the Summit campfire. With bagpipe music of “Amazing Grace” filtering from the woods, and clouds spreading to allow a bright, full moon to light up our campsite, it was a night to remember as we stayed up to tend the fire and share stories of our dreams for the Summit.
The possibilities this huge undertaking presents for the state of West Virginia as well as the BSA are just remarkable.
They see the Summit as a true game-changer for their future, and so do we.
Here’s why. As people from all over the country come to visit the Summit—and be part of the adventure Scouting has provided—any preconceived notions they might have about West Virginia will be washed away. And these visitors will head home with wonderful experiences and impressions about the Mountain State and its people.
I’ve said this often, and it bears repeating: We fell in love with the people of West Virginia before we even saw the property. We are working with some of the greatest folks on earth to breathe life into this dream called the Summit.
This is the real deal. We are capturing the imaginations of thousands of people around the country. The many things we have accomplished, the kinds of things we plan to do, and the many things we haven’t even thought of yet will allow us to truly reinvent how we serve our customer—America’s youth.
Many great days lie ahead, my friends. Let’s all take time to savor the progress we are making and what wonderful things are in store for Scouting when the Summit opens its doors and trails in 2013.

Troop 110 Popcorn Show & Sell I just wanted to share a picture of two of Troop 110 of Rialto show and sell for popcorn. I am proud to see that we had boys out there selling. As a parent and a scout leader this was a great chance to sit back and watch these young men. Popcorn sales isn't just about raising money for camperships or getting the funds needed for summer camp. Its far greater then that. It is a chance for the Boy Scouts to get noticed. At the locations we were at many were amazed that boy scouts are still around. As I told one grandmother "the boy scout program has been here 100 years and we will be here 100 more years." I just wanted to let you see the youth and thank you for giving us all the chance to 'get noticed.'
