Believe it or not, they actually pay people to work at Philmont. And it gets better: They're hiring.
Now's the time for anyone 18 or older to submit an application for next summer. Technically, they accept applications any time of the year, but officials say that applying by Oct. 1 will give applicants the best chance to snag a key position.
That gives you or anyone you know who's interested in working at Philmont about three weeks to get in an application.
The majority of Philmont's 1,000-plus staff members work from late May to mid-August each year. That's the heavy season at Philmont, when crews of Scouts hit the trails for high-adventure fun. To be eligible to apply, you need to be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America (or agree to register before you start working).
Jobs include on-trail rangers, trading post staff, gardeners, training center staff, conservation workers, and many more.
Find the application, a complete list of requirements, detailed job descriptions, and pretty much everything you'll need at the official "Working at Philmont" page on the Philmont

Aerial Photograph of 1000 Scouts at Chino Airport on October 2
The final centennial event by the Temescal District is coming on October 2 at the Chino Airport. Scouts will form giant letters of “BSA 100” on the tarmac while surrounded by flags and four vintage WWII aircraft. The Chino Airport is one of the largest general aviation airports in California and is celebrating its 70th anniversary. As of August, the Temescal District has extended participation to all scouts and scouters in the C.I.E.C. The time to show up is 9:30 am in FULL Class A uniform. When everyone is in place, an aircraft will fly over to create an historic photograph of this event.
The static aircraft are being provided by the famous Planes of Fame Museum and all participants will be offered a greatly reduced rate (cash only) to enter the museum after the photo session is completed. Bring water, your hat, sunscreen, and a smile! For further information, contact Kurt Wochholz at 949-933-8057 or kurtwochholz@earthlink.net

California Teen Teaches Leave No Trace
Teenager, Amy Chapman, is an avid backpacker and Leave No Trace Trainer. She was introduced to Leave No Trace by her father, and her environmental sensibilities led her into a teaching role. She now teaches Leave No Trace to youth and adults through the Boy Scouts’ Woodbadge program. Questions for Amy.
LNT: What activities do you do outdoors? AC: One of my favorite outdoor activities is backpacking. I love being with my friends and family in the backcountry, living off whatever I've brought and hiking in all sorts of beautiful places. Besides that I'm a huge fan of ultimate frisbee, which I learned to play at Philmont. The best thing about it though, is all the fun and interesting people I've gotten to meet. Read More.....
El Paso Boy Scout saves his teacher from oncoming car
At Scouting magazine, we hear a lot of stories about heroic Scouts, but they never get old.
That's why we wanted to share with you the story of Fernando Espinosa, a Boy Scout from El Paso, Tex., who pushed his teacher out of the path of an oncoming car near his high school. Fernando's teacher suffered a broken foot but says that she's alive thanks to him.
Fernando didn't make it out of the way, though, and the car hit him, throwing him into the windshield and injuring his head and knee. He's recovering well, and this week he'll receive the Honor Medal with Crossed Palms (left) for his bravery.
The medal, one of the rarest in Scouting, is given in "exceptional cases to a youth member or adult leader who has demonstrated unusual heroism and extraordinary skill or resourcefulness in saving or attempting to save life at extreme risk to self." The medal was first awarded in 1938, and only 231 have been given through the end of 2009.
