Welcome to our September 23rd, 2013 Monday Memo

Old Baldy District Troop 641

Troop 641 meets at the VFW Hall in Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Old Baldy District.

They went to Fiesta Island for their summer camp and, with only 8-10 boys, won the Best Troop for the week award.

They received a wooden paddle to display on their Troop Flag. Not bad for such a small troop.

Here they are at their Court of Awards which was held after their summer break.

Cooking Merit Badge Required for Eagle

As of January 1st 2014 the Cooking Merit Badge will be required for Eagle Rank Advancement – If you are working with Scout who might be effected as they are getting near their eighteenth birthday, they need to complete their application, and have it verified by council prior to this January 1st 2014 date. It doesn’t appear that there will be any grace period offered in regards to this required merit badge. See attached current requirements for cooking.

Please help get the word out in regards to the Cooking Merit Badge Requirement for Eagle Rank Advancement - There is no plan to offer a ‘grace period’ for the Cooking merit badge. Sufficient notice has been made where we will not be offering any grace period. It is incumbent upon the councils, districts, and unit leaders to ensure their Scouts are aware of the requirements.

Riverside Mayor's Celebrations of th Arts and Innovation

Dear Joe,

I am writing with a personal request to be part of the first celebration of a new Mayor. There only gets to be one first! This is it. We want to do it right for Mayor Rusty Bailey.

On SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2013, Riverside’s signature event in support of the arts begins a new era as the MAYOR’S CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS AND INNOVATION.  The FOX ENTERTAINMENT PLAZA, Riverside’s newest state-of-the-art venue, will host the most interactive collection of sights and sounds ever included in one event.  Three separate areas . . . The Box, Showcase Exhibit Hall and Promenade . . . over two levels, will showcase everything that helps to define the arts, culture and innovation in Riverside.  Festivals, music, performance, exhibition, dancing and THE ART OF FOOD, a Taste of Riverside-style representation of some of the City’s best restaurants, combine with a distinctly more playful flavor to make this an evening to remember.

WHAT YOU’LL SEE . . .

  • Performances: Members of the Riverside County Philharmonic, Riverside Community Players, Riverside Youth Theatre, Raincross Chorale, Ballet Folklorico de Riverside, Room to Dance, California Riverside Ballet, Circosthesia, along with award-winning international dance sensations, The Groovaloos.
  • Exhibitions: Riverside Art Museum, Riverside African American Historical Society, Riverside Community Arts Association, March Field Air Museum, Division 9 and Artworks.
  • Plus: Interactive artistic experiences with Collaboration X, the Riverside Dickens Festival, ego-busting caricatures, Inlandia Institute, science and technology displays and much more.
WHAT IT SUPPORTS . . .
The Celebration, formerly known as the Mayor’s Ball, is the RIVERSIDE ART’S COUNCIL’S annual event dedicated to providing support for the Community Arts Partnership (CAP) grants and other valuable programs.  CAP provides funds for community –based performing and visual arts projects, serving more than 60,000 individuals of all ages.  The Riverside Arts Council is a private, non-profit corporation whose programs include arts education, exhibitions, technical assistance, marketing and convening of collaborative projects that connect groups and communities throughout the region.

DETAILS . . .
                Tickets are $75 per person
                Time is 6:00-10:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 12, 2013

Inland Catholic Diocese Now Nation’s Fifth Biggest

The huge growth in the region’s Latino population is the primary reason. Only Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Boston have larger dioceses. As the flocks of worshippers grew, however, the number of priests declined.

The Inland area is now home to the nation’s fifth largest Roman Catholic diocese, a reflection of a rapidly growing Latino population that has transformed many of the region’s parishes.

There are nearly 1.6 million Catholics in the Diocese of San Bernardino, which encompasses Riverside and San Bernardino counties, the diocese estimates. That's nearly triple the number as in 1993, when with just over 562,000 parishioners San Bernardino was the 24th biggest diocese, according to the 2013 Official Catholic Directory.

“It’s heartening to see these numbers,” said John Andrews, spokesman for the diocese. “On the other hand, we have a bigger job serving the people and making sure they’re alive in their faith.”

The huge growth in parishioners is mostly due to the dramatic increase in the Inland Empire’s Latino population, he said. Read More......

Voice of the Scout

This is your chance to tell us what you're up to. The Voice of the Scout program wants to capture the experiences of our members and volunteers. Email surveys will be sent to leaders, chartered organization representatives, parents of Scouts, and Scouts over age 14. To receive a survey, someone in the Scouting household must have email information on file in the BSA ScoutNET system.

This feedback will help everyone involved in delivering the Scouting program to be aware of what members and volunteers want, so we, at every level, can find ways to meet and exceed their expectations.

"We do listen to the feedback we receive, but we need to hear from everyone as their input helps our youth receive the best program possible," says Chris Johnson, Vice President of District Operations

The fall cycle of Voice of the Scout starts September 22. Please watch for it in your email.

We look forward to your participation in the survey.

Join BSA in celebrating its 100-year partnership with the LDS church

lds-100 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was the first sponsor of the Boy Scouts of America way back in 1913. One-hundred years later, the LDS church brings hundreds of thousands of Scouts into the movement each year. Next month, your Scouting family can join the BSA family in celebrating that “Century of Honor” through a special live production held in Salt Lake City.

There’s something in the show for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venturers, Scouters, Scouting families and non-Scouting families of any religion. The live broadcast celebrates Scouting, not just the LDS church, so it’s relevant to everyone.

As you’ll see in the pulse-pounding trailer after the jump, the 85-minute performance will include original music and media, historical reenactments, special guests and a cast of hundreds of Scouts.

All of this awesomeness will be hosted at the Salt Lake City’s 21,000-seat Conference Center, where the annual Mormon Tabernacle Choir concert is taped each December.
Circle Oct. 29 on your calendar NOW. At 7pm MDT on that Tuesday night, the show begins. Watch the trailer and get the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How after the jump.

"I do not at all understand the mystery of grace - only that it meets us where we are but does not leave us where it found us."

    ~  Anne Lamott

Lord, may we be ever mindful of Your grace and love
in all that surrounds us. Thank You for making Yourself
visible through the beauty of Your creation. Teach us
to look beyond the beauty to see Your hand at work.
