California Inland Empire Council Monday Memo |

Welcome to our September 26th, 2011 Monday Memo |
Want to Join Scouting? BeAScout.org
 | Now, when a friend of your son or daughter—or even a fellow adult—asks, “How can I get involved in Scouting?” your answer just got easier: BeAScout.org. While the recruitment Web site isn’t new, the BSA has simplified its searchability, making it a breeze for new Scouts or Venturers to get plugged into their local Scouting community. All that’s needed is a ZIP code and a few clicks of a mouse. The search bar isn’t the only new addition. A series of “Matrix”-like videos showcase what it means to be a Scout or Venturer. (Hint: lots of high-adventure fun.) If you haven’t seen the videos, check them out here. The next time someone asks you about Scouting, you can be sure this easy-to-remember answer will make a lasting impression. |
Tahquitz District Troop 2011 Helps Hiker
I understand that your Wildomar VFW post is a sponsor of the Boy Scouts of America Troop #2011.
It is my pleasure to report to you that your support contributions have been well deserved, and that the famous Scout oath to help others is alive and well.
My name is Edgar Rector. Before I became almost home-bound to care for my handicapped daughter and an 85-year old wife with Alzheimer's, my hobby was hiking, and I climbed many peaks and once spent six weeks climbing in Nepal. In recent years, however, my caretaker duties at home kept me pretty well out of action. So I was very happy when my son, plus a qualified "sitter" companion, became available to enable me to escape for a weekend in our local mountains.
I chose Mt. San Jacinto, in back of Palm Springs. It has a beautiful tram cable ride from the desert up to about the 9,200 foot level, from where a trail leads through a forest to the area below the peak... altitude about 10,850 feet. A great hike.
But I am now 83 -- a fact that I ridiculously overlooked. I planned a day hike, which wouldn't require a flashlight or sleeping bag, on June 4th. I had climbed that peak twice many years ago and thought I remembered the route, so didn't need a map. Also I didn't take into consideration the last winter was exceptionally rainy, which left a lot of snow at high altitudes; including some covering the trails.
So off I went from the top of the tram, and a late start didn't appear to be an obstacle. However, it turned out to be. I soon discovered that at my age, in the rarefied air and snow-clogged trails, I was climbing substantially slower than I had 14 years earlier when I last did it. That led to mistake #4: I was determined to prove to myself that I could still make it, no matter how long it took.
San Jacinto has a very rocky summit, and it was all covered with snow. No Trail. The last 200 yards were crawling. But dead as my legs were, I finally made it. Bad decision. All the other climbers were leaving by then, by the time I started back, I was the last one -- soon all alone, and darkness was coming. My pace going down was a painful slow shuffle, with falls on the ice. I could hardly lift my legs. The wind was increasing, the snow reminded me that it was still not summer, and the temperature dropped below freezing.
There were five miles still to go back to the ranger station at the tip of the tram, including streams to cross by balancing over logs in the dark... if I could follow a rocky trail partly covered with snow. If I couldn't make it I might freeze to death.
It was then that I stumbled upon your wonderful Wildomar Scout Troop #2011, assembling on a windy notch for a camp out, and fully prepared for the elements, with sleeping bags and tents.
Ed, Jess and the others leaders helped me hobble to their camp spot about a mile away, provided a folding chair (which I fell over, trying to sit down) and then proceeded to supply me with a tent and sleeping bag! The bag was made available by having two scouts double up in one bag, I believe. They also offered food, but I had lost my appetite.
The next morning I was refreshed enough to continue to the tram, and my car at the bottom.
So that's my experience with Wildomar troop #2011. Sorry I didn't have a pen and paper to record all the Scout leaders names. I can't say enough good things about them, and about Scouting and it's oath to help others.Your VFW post should certainly be proud of them, and proud to support them. They deserve some sort of merit badge!
Sincerely, Edgar C. Rector
