Three Peaks District Distinguished Citizen Dinner

Story & Photo By Diane A. Rhodes

The Boy Scouts of America Three Peaks District recently honored 13 Scoutmasters of the San Jacinto Valley at its 2012 Community Recognition Dinner at the San Jacinto home of Larry and Sandy Minor.

District Chairman and San Jacinto Mayor Andrew Kotyuk spoke of how the annual event usually honors a specific citizen and his work in the community.

“This year, we honor the men on the front lines doing all the hard work,” he said. “We are paying respect and tribute to the Scoutmasters who are molding our young men.”

Kotyuk said all the volunteers who mentor Scouts should be acknowledged for their efforts in ensuring the next generation retains the ethics and values instilled by the Boy Scouts of America.

Keynote speaker Breen Frazier delivered an enlightening speech. He acknowledged he has no direct experience with the Boy Scouts, but said in researching the organization, he was humbled by what he discovered. Read More....

Ukrainian International Plast (Scout) Jubilee

This year, the Ukrainian Plast celebrated 100 years and BSA International received an invitation for BSA to attend their Jubilee.  BSA International selected two leaders, four Boy Scouts and one Sea Scout and we all had a great time.

Ukrainian Scouting has been known since its inception as "Plast".  In Ukrainian a plastun is an historical name for a Cossack scout and sentry serviceman.  The founder of Ukrainian Scouting adapted the universal Scout principles to the needs and interests of Ukrainian youth.

Plast has gone through many periods when it was banned because of the controlling government; the last being Soviet Russia.  During many of these times, many Ukrainians moved to countries like the US, Canada, Australia, Argentina and Germany and established Plast in these countries.  When Ukraine became a free country in 1991, many Plast members from overseas came back and reestablished it in the Ukraine.  The beauty of this is that Plast requires that its members, even if overseas, learn the language and culture of the Ukraine so the Ukrainians have a great relationship with Plast.  Our US contingent was impressed with this fact.  We observed the enthusiasm of town’s people for Plast by their clapping and cheering as we marched over three miles in full uniform to the opening.

Our first few days in the Ukraine were with Plast families as home stays.  The home stays worked out very well.  The benefit of home stays before the event begins is that you have established friends that will be at the event and they can introduce you to others.

The Jubilee consisted of an opening day, four days of activities and a closing day.  Our US contingent always had fun and often excelled at the activities.  We even got time with the Ukrainian Chief Scout; a very friendly person.  For each scout, this was their first experience overseas and it will be remembered for a lifetime!

BSA Goes NASCAR!

As the BSA continues to articulate our movement in more relevant and meaningful terms to the American public, we’re proud to announce our entry into the exciting, fast-paced sport of NASCAR. This high profile platform will allow the BSA to take the lead on defining who we are, continue our efforts of promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) to those involved in Scouting, and directly support Scouting’s Journey to Excellence.

The National Council is proud to announce a multiyear relationship with Scott Lagasse, owner of Team SLR. Scott’s team has secured a multiyear, primary sponsorship with Peterson Industries, home of the Hybrid Light product line – solar flashlights that are always ready to work without a concern for dead batteries. With Hybrid Light as the primary sponsor and the BSA as the associate sponsor, Team SLR is gearing up for a successful run in the 2013 NASCAR Nationwide Series. In preparation for a competitive 2013 season, Team SLR will be running the Hybrid Light/BSA car in three races this year: 1) Kentucky 300 – Sparta, KY, 2) Kansas Lottery 300 – Kansas City, KS, and 3) Ford EcoBoost 300 – Homestead, FL.

Scouting has worked for more than a century to become part of the solutions that move our country forward; but we realize we can’t do it alone. We are simply a piece of a very complex and broad-reaching puzzle. Organizations like Team SLR of the NASCAR Nationwide Series and Hybrid Light embrace their role in this great pursuit. With this understanding, our goal is to continue to position Scouting as a valued partner to community organizations, corporate champions, and sporting leagues, all seeking to do their part in cultivating our greatest American asset, our youth.

There aren’t many better platforms to broadcast the Scouting message than through NASCAR, so please be on the lookout for more information about this exciting relationship with Scott Lagasse and Team SLR.
