Good day and welcome to our September 3rd, 2010 Labor Day Edition Monday Memo
Cub Scouts New Delivery Method
The roll-out of the Cub Scouts New Delivery Method has been very well received by thousands of professional Scouters and volunteers across the United States. All materials used in the roll-out are available for use to train councils, districts and units. This is the beginning of a new era for training roll-outs for the BSA. You can expect this level of support in implementing all new program updates and changes in the future.
The supportive materials include:
- PowerPoint and script to use when training units
- PowerPoint template for use in creating new training
- Executive talking points for Scout and District Executives to use to easily explain what the new method is all about
- You-Tube video (3 minutes) describing the new “Den & Pack Meeting Resource Guide,” the most integral piece of the literature developed to support the new method
- A live-version of the “Cub Scouts New Delivery Method Webinar,” is being taped on June 12th and will be available online by June 20th.
- Fall webinars will be done to support new den leaders by rank
- More You-Tube “quick-start” videos are being taped on June 14th and should be available online by July 15th
- … and, an email address for all volunteers to use with questions concerning this or other programs that impact our youth and adult members – program.content@scouting.org
All of this material and more can be located at: http://scouting.org/scoutsource/CubScouts/Leaders/NewDeliveryMethod.aspx

The 100th for Fall Recruiting, Unit Meetings, and Camporees
Wow! It’s Labor Day weekend! That means you probably are, or soon will be, knee-deep in fall recruiting, camporee and fall event planning, and getting Scouts back into “meeting mode” after a summer off. Need ideas? Tap into 1OOth Anniversary programs. It’s easy to slot these ideas directly into your plans for a strong finish to our anniversary year.
Use new recruitment tools.
- Our people. Through Generations Connection and the National Hall of Leadership, we’ve collected thousands of stories about remarkable people in Scouting (available through MyBSA). Ask these individuals to speak at events with prospective Scout parents, community groups, even the media.
- BeAScout.org. We can’t take credit for this important new tool as part of the 1OOth, but want to reinforce that it is available now for use in all your outreach. Make sure council and unit information is entered correctly!
- Geocaching. It’s a great time to Get in the Game! Look through our geocaching toolkit materials to plan a fun unit event that could also attract prospective members and help re-engage Scouting alumni.
- Adventure Base 1OO. Even if you weren’t on this year’s schedule, you can still take advantage of valuable assets, like webisode videos that focus squarely on programs and recruitment. For those on the tour schedule, use the passport database to find new prospects!
Provide special opportunities for parents and alumni.
- Alumni gatherings. Reconnecting can be as easy as inviting alumni to visit a camporee for coffee and doughnuts (contact information on MyBSA). Need additional ways to re-engage? Here are 10 simple ideas.
- Scouting family activities. Generations Connection has a wealth of fun and rewarding activities for Scouts and their parents, like tracing their family tree or sharing their family story to receive a special certificate.
Ask community partners—like your local post office—to get involved!
- Special postmarks called “pictorial cancels” can be created and applied to envelopes with a Scouting stamp to make it more valuable for collectors. Read our “Engaging Your Local Post Office” guide to learn how you can create a cancellation event.
Create fun (and meaningful) unit activities.
You don’t have to revamp your programs to include the 1OOth Anniversary. These programs were designed to easily fit into your existing plans. In the coming weeks, we’ll be holding a webinar to outline our year-end plans and give you even more ideas about how you can continue a purpose-driven celebration through the end of the year.
Together, launching our second century of service!

This Sept. 11, Scouts will show a Surge of patriotism
Scouts, Scouters, parents, and non-Scouts everywhere will unite next month to honor the Americans who died in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Scout Surge 9/11 is being billed as an opportunity for remembering the victims of the attacks nine years ago while also celebrating the patriotism on which this nation was built.
Start planning now to hold an event with your pack, troop, or crew. If you're an adult in charge of a troop or crew, suggest this event to your unit's junior leaders. Ask them to consider planning something that will bring your community together at 8:46 a.m. on Sept. 11, a Saturday.
Planning tips and more information is available at the Scout Surge 9/11 link above. Here are some of their suggestions:
Things to do: - Decide on a specific location to meet.
- Tell people to arrive so that at 8:46 a.m. exactly, they can recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
- Use Twitter, text messages, e-mail, Facebook, and MySpace to spread the word.
- Be as public as possible without obstructing traffic or creating a safety hazard. (Standard Scouting policies apply.)
Ideas for the event: - Have everyone wear a red, white, or blue shirt.
- Hand out flags to wave.
- Fly the Flag of Honor.
- Honor a local hero.
- Visit a local fire or police department to say thank you.
- Invite a band to perform.
- Have everyone meet for breakfast after the event.
- Invite the media.

Kernal Journal
Greetings Kernals!
The 2010 Popcorn Sale is well underway. 118 Scouting units are participating in the Show & Sell Sale with orders totaling $424,609! That is a nearly 6% increase over last year. Great job!
It’s not too late for units to sign up for the Show & Sell popcorn sale. We have ordered extra of the top four selling products: Unbelievable Butter, Butter Light, Gourmet Caramel Corn and Classic Carmel Corn. Units can visit our council’s Powered by Popcorn webpage at http://bsa-ciec.org/openrosters/ViewOrgPageLink.asp?LinkKey=9957&orgkey=21 for more information or to sign-up for either sale.
Media Promotion
Trail’s End & CIEC will be kicking off the promotion of this year’s sale through various media outlets this week, just in time to help you sell more popcorn. If you or your Scouts have a fun and interesting story to tell on selling popcorn or what you did with the funds, please let me know so that we can share it with the local paper or radio station. Email me your story and pictures to Kevin.gustafson@scouting.org.
Popcorn Pick-up Location & Schedule
Popcorn for the Show & Sell sale will be available for pick-up on Saturday, September 11th from 8:00 AM till 1:00 PM. The warehouse is located in the same area as last year just off of Mountain View and Interstate 10 in Redlands. The address is 10444 Corporate Dr, Suite A, Redlands, CA 92374.
Golden Kernal Incentive
Wandering the High Desert and the Inland Empire are a number of special people who, when approached to buy popcorn may present the Scout with a special Golden Kernal or Superseller patch. This patch can then be presented at either the Jack Dembo Service Center in Redlands or the Ontario Field Office where the Scout can receive a special one-time prize!
Have a great day!
Jamboree-On-The-Air 2010
What is JOTA?
When Scouts want to meet young people from another country, they usually think of attending a World Jamboree. But few people realize that each year more than 400,000 Scouts and Guides "get together" over the airwaves for the annual Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA). Modern technology offers Scouts the exciting opportunity to make friends in other countries without leaving home.
JOTA is an annual event in which Boy and Girl Scouts and Guides from all over the world speak to each other by means of Amateur (ham) Radio. Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared via radio waves. Since 1958 when the first Jamboree-on-the-Air was held, millions of Scouts have met each other through this event. Many contacts made during JOTA have resulted in pen pals and links between Scout troops that have lasted many years.
With no restrictions on age or on the number of participants, and at little or no expense, JOTA allows Scouts to contact each other by ham radio. The radio stations are operated by licensed amateur radio operators. Many Scouts and leaders hold licenses and have their own stations, but the majority participate in JOTA through stations operated by local radio clubs and individual radio amateurs.

The Best Kept Secret in the BSA
Internet Advancement is a great tool to record youth member advancements from any online location—at home or at the office. You will find this new method to be easy, convenient, and accurate because you enter the information.
Here’s how it works:
The California Inland Empire Council has an Internet Advancement page on our website with instructions and a link to this great resource.
Internet Advancement makes it easy for unit leadership to record awards, ranks, and merit badges to youth via an online process. At any time during the year, the unit advancement processor from each active unit will be able to record advancements to youth member records. And, they’ll also be able to print a unit roster at any time. The roster is the most current information from the council’s database, and includes the BSA’s person ID for each adult and youth member.
There are several other useful reports available from Internet Advancement.
- Unit Advancement Summary shows ranks, merit badges, and awards saved in each person record for current members of the unit.
- Advancement Report lists each youth member that has new ranks, merit badges, and awards, if any. This is the official unit Advancement Report to be signed and submitted to the office.
- Unit Awards Summary lists the number of new ranks, merit badges, and awards by name as a shopping list.
- Advancement Update Summary lists any ranks, merit badges, and awards that were already in the member record and were updated online.
The council can provide your unit’s unique Unit ID number, and the unit will need to assign an adult to record advancements. Ranks must be recorded based on program identification and in the correct rank and date sequence. Only the Eagle Scout rank cannot be awarded by this process. Awards to be entered will not include nominated awards, such as those for meritorious action, and awards that are controlled by other organizations, even if approved for uniform wear. As BSA policies for rank entry are enforced, what units enter will meet these requirements.
If you need help, there’s a link to the Internet Advancement help on the council webpage. There’s also a helpful Frequently Asked Questions link on the Internet Advancement site.
If you have any questions or comments, contact Advancement Clerk Janelle Agre, jaagre@bsamail.org or call (909) 793-2463 Ext.126 or (877) 732-1450.

I would like to let you and your staff know that our Pack had a great time at Camp Wiley 2010 (July 16-19), thank you for all the hard work! And on a personal note, I would also like to recognize Joseph Bryne for his outstanding dedication to the Scouting Core Values. He and his team did an excellent job at the aquatics center. While his team conducted the scheduled class, he took the time to personally tutor my son, David, with the Aquanaut Activity Badge and his fear of the deep end of the pool. I found Joseph’s patience, knowledge and care to be above and beyond his assigned duties, and for that I am impressed and grateful.
